AB - Grain quality parameters of five new maize inbred lines were investigated and compared with the corresponding properties of two commercial hybrids used in flour production.Kernel of the line L2 had the highest 1000-kernel mass (267.54 g), and line L2 had the highest test mass (844.68 kg m-3).The milling response ranged from 9.80 (L2) to 14.03 s (L1). The largest share of the soft fraction of endosperm was determined in L3 (37.13 %), which is slightly lower than in hybrid ZP 633. The highest protein (12.37 %), as well as crude fibre content (2.59 %) was determined in inbred line L4, while the lowest protein was found in the line L2 (9.36 %), and the lowest crude fibre content (1.81 %) was detected in line L3.All tested maize inbred lines were found to be highly prospective for breeding of new hybrids with improved grain quality parameters

AB - Results and discussion about observation of leaf infrared spectrum parameters with
the intention of overall characterisation of the traits of the elite maize inbred lines
ZPPL 186, ZPPL 225, ZP M1-3-3 Sdms are presented. The proposed hypothesis
was that numerous spectral bands of maize inbred lines leaves, not observed yet,
but occurring in the different kinetic forms (bands of high and low intensity, single
or grouped), should be systematically studied and the dynamics of their formation,
very often caused by different oscillations and vibrations of molecular
bonds, should be explained. In some cases, there is a possibility of the partial cancellation
or increase of spectral bands intensity. According to our hypothesis, low
intensity spectral bands imply the unstable state of the biological system (leaf),
which is a consequence of the excited state of molecules, radicals, atoms or ions
in tissues, cells or biomembranes. Similar transport processes occur when biological
systems are rhythmically excited, as well as when complex transport of ions
occur across the excited thylakoid membrane. These bands most frequently appear
in the wave number range of 500—1600 cm–1. Nevertheless, they fractionally occur
in the wave number up to 3000 cm–1. These spectral bands varied over inbred lines
used in this study. The systematic analysis of spectral bands of leaves of observed
maize inbred lines (for instance, high intensity bands with significant width on
3370 cm–1) showed the difference in their occurrence: the most intensive occurrence
was in leaves of the inbred line ZPPL 186, then in ZP M1-3-3 Sdms, while
the lowest intensity was detected in the inbred line ZPPL 225. In such a complex
way, it is possible to identify not only organic compounds and their structure in
leaves of observed maize inbred lines, but also to indicate the possibility of complex
inducement of their unstable and conformational states.

AB - In this article we used the method of IR spectroscopy to identify bioactive organic compounds and
their structural characteristics in the leaves of maize inbred lines ZPPL 186, ZPPL 225 and M1-3-3 Sdms
based on a standard study of high intensity high-amplitude spectral bands and based on attempt-study of
hypothetically influential low intensity low-amplitude spectral bands. The made assumption was that numerous
spectral bands, not analyzed yet, but occurring in different kinetic forms should be systematically analyzed
and the dynamics of their formation caused by different oscillations and vibrations of molecular bonds
of organic compounds and their functional groups should be proven. Low intensity spectral bands imply
unstable state of the biological system (leaf), which is a consequence of the excited state of molecules, radicals,
atoms or ions in tissues, cells or biomembranes. Similar transport processes occur when biological systems
are rhythmically stimulated, as well as in the case of a complex ion transport across the excited thylakoid
membrane. These bands most frequently occurred in the wave number range of 500–1600 cm–1; they
appeared in several spots in wave number ranges up to 3000 cm–1. Amines, primary and secondary amides,
proteins, amino acids, alkanes, alkenes, aldehydes, ketones, aromatic compounds, carbohydrates, carboxylic
acids, ethers, alcohols, sulfides, mono- and polysaccharides were identified in leaves of inbred lines. The
analysis of spectral bands showed that the most intensive was the inbred line ZPPL 186, then the ZPPL M1-3-3
Sdms, while the lowest intensity was detected in ZPPL 225. Thus, by overall study it is possible to identify not
only organic compounds and their structures in leaves of inbred lines, but also to indicate the possibility of
causing an unstable and conformational state in them.

AB - Grain yield stability was tested in 10 single cross maize hybrids and their reciprocal crosses
in 2016 and 2017, within a total of seven environments. Five were early hybrids with
Lancaster ZPL-1 line as a mutual parent (ZPH1 to ZPH5 where ZPL-1 was a father, and ZPH1r
to ZPH5r with ZPL-1 as a mother). Other five were late hybrids with mutual ZPL-2
Lancaster line (ZPH6 to ZPH10, and ZPH6r to ZPH10r). Significant difference at p<0.01 level
was observed between average grain yield of the early vs. late hybrids (10.82 vs. 11.04
tha-1). Also, stability parameters were significantly different; bi was 0.946 on average for
the early hybrids and 1.054 for the late ones (p<0.01), thereby confirming that the early
hybrids performed better in poorer environments, and vice versa. This is a common finding
in Serbia. Regarding S2di, the difference between early and late hybrids was significant at
p<0.1 level (0.166 and 0.487 for early and late hybrids, respectively). Also, S2di was
significantly different at p<0.1 level for early hybrids and their reciprocals, as well as all the
other hybrids and their reciprocals. Namely, reciprocal hybrids were less stable (Lancaster
as a mother). Best-performing hybrid was ZPH6r, yielding 12.06 tha-1 on average (the
highest yield in the trial), with bi=1.16, and S2di=0.06. The hybrid performed well in
favourable agronomical conditions, as well as maintaining grain yield stability across other
environment types.

AB - The evaluation of combining abilities is an inevitable step in the development of highly
productive maize hybrids. The mean values, heterosis, and general (GCA) and specific (SCA)
combining abilities of maize inbreds and their hybrids were observed in this study. Inbreds
of different cycles of recurrent selection of two maize synthetic populations BSSS and
BSCB1 were selected for the study. Hybrids showed higher values of the ear length than
inbreds, since inbreeding depression occurs in inbreds as a result of the inbreeding
process. The analysis of variance of combining abilities indicates significant positive
values of GCA and SCA over both locations and both years of investigation. Since GCA to
SCA ratio for inbreds of the BSSS population and parents of an elite hybrid was lower than
unit, it can be concluded that a non-additive gene effect might be more important in
controlling the expression of this trait. On the other hand, the additive gene effect was
the most important for inbreds and hybrids originating from the BSCB1 population. The
highest GCA values were recorded in inbreds ZPL1 and ZPL2. Hybrids derived from these
two inbreds showed high SCA values in both years of investigation.

AB - Maize inbred lines developed from different cycles of recurrent selection of two synthetic populations, BSSS and BSCB1, were selected for the observation in the present study. The aim of the study was to estimate which of the observed inbred lines had the highest relative values of favourable alleles for the enhancement of the number of kernel rows of the elite hybrid. The highest values of μG* were recorded in the inbred lines B73(C5) and B84(C7) of the
population BSSS. The difference μG*-(μD* or μF*) in these inbreds was significant in favour of the favourable dominant alleles and also were good donors for the grain yield, thus it may be expected that plants with a satisfactory number of kernel rows will be simultaneously derived. In the estimation of relatedness, the inbreds B73(C5) and B84(C7) showed the consanguinity with the inbred of the parent ZPL1. Therefore, it is necessary to beck-cross their F1 generation (ZPL1 x B73 and ZPL1 x B84) with inbred donors and then to start self-pollination with the aim to derive inbreds that will replace the inbred ZPL1 in the observed period. The values of favourable alleles in the inbreds B91(C8) and B97(C9) of the synthetic population BSCB1 were significant. Both inbreds had a significant positive difference μG*-(μD* or μF*) between the number of favourable dominant and unfavourable recessive alleles, and due to it, the F1 generation (parental inbred x inbred donor) should be backcrossed to the inbred donor.

donor) sa linijom donorom., Maize inbred lines developed from different cycles of recurrent selection of two synthetic populations, BSSS and BSCB1, were selected for the observation in the present study.
Both inbreds had a significant positive difference μG*-(μD* or μF*) between the number of favourable dominant and unfavourable recessive alleles, and due to it, the F1 generation (parental inbred x inbred donor) should be backcrossed to the inbred donor.",

AB - A set of fifteen elite inbred lines of maize (used as mothers) and three tester inbred lines (used as fathers) were investigated using line x tester statistical model, including both hybrids and inbreds. Four traits were measured: grain yield, 1000 kernel weight, phytic phosphorus (Pphy) and inorganic phosphorus (P-i) in the kernel. P-phy content among hybrids ranged from 2.342 to 4.812 g kg(-1) and P-i content from 0.562 to 2.340 g kg(-1), while among inbreds (lines and testers) they ranged from 2.503 to 4.180 g kg(-1) and from 0.587 to 1.629 g kg(-1), respectively. Correlations between the four traits allow breeding for high P, and low Pphy, as well as for both high P-i and phytate, without compromising grain yield. Correlation for hybrids between P-phy and P-i was 0.185 (p lt 0.05) and for inbreds 0.142 (non-significant). General combining ability / special combining ability (GCA/SCA) values for all the traits were below 1 (very low) indicated non-additive inheritance. In the investigated set of genotypes, multiple selection indices should be used for simultaneous improvement of grain yield and phosphorus profile of maize grain.

AB - Modern biophysical methods have provided a breakthrough in investigations of the status and functions of the intact plants at the molecular level. The infrared (IR) spectroscopy allows us to analyze the molecular composition and structure by recording the absorption of infrared radiation as a function of frequency of valent and deformation vibrations (wavenumber, cm-1) for chemical bonds. We used the IR Fourier spectroscopy method (IR spectra with Fourier Transformation,) to investigated the grain composition in maize hybrids - ZP 341, ZP 434 and ZP 505 created at Maize Research Institute (Zemun Polje, Belgrade, Serbia). The resulted spectra differed in peak number and intensity, and in oscillation frequency. Particularly, there are 20 to 23 peaks and characteristic spectral bands within the wavenumber range of 400 to 4000 cm-1. Characteristic spectral bands were analyzed for each hybrid with regard to absorption intensity in %, experimentally determined wavenumber in cm-1, and published wavenumber range. A comparison of these peaks to reference IR spectra from databases revealed biogenic organic molecules: alcohols, amines, esters, alkanes, carboxylic acids, alkenes, aldehydes, ketones and esters in the studied grain hybrids. In a typical IR spectrum of maize hybrid ZP 341 there were three most distinct bands with wavenumbers of 3400, 2900 and 1000 cm-1. Four peaks (3400, 2950, 1700 and 1000 cm-1) were characteristic of the ZP 434 hybrid, and eight major peaks of 3400, 2900, 2850, 1750, 1700, 1450, 1150 and 1000 cm-1 were observed in ZP 505. That is, the grain charterisics in ZP 505 slightly differ from those in ZP 341 and ZP 434, whereas in ZP 341 and ZP 434 the grain structure is more similar. In general, Serbian hybrids are characterized by high quality, productivity and technological suitability. The developed methodology for IR spectra recording and analysis in grain allows to reveal the composition and structure of biogenic compounds. It is important not only for diagnosis and breeding, but also for the development of biotechnological screening methods, or the estimation of grain storage time.

AB - Twenty-seven maize inbreds (12 commercial and 15 developing lines) from Maize Research Institute breeding program were subjected to microsatelite analysis. The aim was genetic diversity determination, establishing relationships among tested lines and assigning them to heterotic groups according to molecular marker data. Number of alelles detected was 97, with an average of 3.23. Major allele frequency was in a range from 0.33 to 0.82 (average 0.55). The highest value for observed heterozygosity was 10% for several developing lines. Mean values for gene diversity and PIC were 0.56 and 0.48, respectively. Frequency-based distances were calculated using Roger's coefficient and average value of 0.57 indicates high genetic diversity in analyzed maize inbreds. Distance matrices were subjected to cluster analysis and PCA. Multivariate analysis methods showed considerable concurrency with pedigree data. Results of analysis with 30 microsatellite markers could be useful for defining/redefining heterotic groups but should be complemented with field testing data.

AB - A total of seven maize inbred lines of different origin and maturity group were used in the trial set up according to the split-plot randomized complete block design in five environments. Each inbred was observed in five variants: original inbred (N); cytoplasmic male sterile C-type (CMS-C); restorer for CMS-C (RfC); cytoplasmic male sterile S-type (CMS-S) and restorer for CMS-S (RfS). The objective was to compare grain yield of original inbreds and their CMS and Rf variants and to apply Isoelectric focusing (IEF) to determine whether the conversion of original inbreds to their CMS and Rf counterparts have been done completely. Protein markers have shown that conversion of almost all inbreds was done good and completely. Only original inbreds ZPL2 and ZPL5 did not concur on banding patterns with their RfC variants. The type of cytoplasm had a very significant impact on grain yield. Namely, CMS-C counterparts significantly out yielded their CMS-S versions, while the inbreds with C and S cytoplasm over yielded inbreds with N cytoplasm, as well as their RfC and RfS versions.
