AB  - Plava lucerka (Medicago sativa L.) je zbog svih svojih osobina najvažnija krmna biljka u našoj zemlji. Veliki značaj lucerke se
ogleda u proizvodnji kvalitetne kabaste hrane, ali je i seme lucerke vredna i tražena roba na domaćem i inostranom tržištu. Areal
gajenja lucerke je na svim kontinentima u više od 80 zemalja, od umereno hladnog do tropskog pojasa. Široka geografska
rasprostranjenost lucerke uslovljena je njenom velikom adaptabilnošću na različite klimatske i zemljišne uslove.U ovom radu je
ispitivano prisustvo fitopatogenih rodova gljiva na semenu pet različite sorata lucerke (Kruševačka 28, NS-Mediana, Zaječarska 83,
Banjalučanka i Osječka-66) sa po tri različite partije (lokaliteta) od svake sorte. Kod ispitivanih sorti identifikovani su sledeći rodovi
gljiva: Alternaria spp.,Fusarium spp., Penicillium spp. i Mucor spp. Prisustvo identifikovanih rodova gljiva bilo je u rasponu od 0 %
do 15,5%. Rod Mucor spp. najmanju prosečnu vrednost imao je kod sorte lucerke K-28 (0,08%), dok je najveću prosečnu vrednost
imao kod sorte Zaječarska 83 (8,67%), a takođe kod iste sorte konstatovano je najveće prisustvo od (15,5%) na lokalitetu Veliki
Izvor. Najveće prosečno prisustvo roda Fusarium spp. zabeleženo je kod sorte Zaječarska 83 (0,25 %). Na proučavanim sortama
lucerke ispitani su korelacioni odnosi između parametara kvaliteta semena i prisustva patogena na semenu različitih sorata i partija
lucerke. Negativna korelaciona međuzavisnost zabeležena je između ukupne klijavosti i prisustva gljive iz roda Fusarium spp. (r= -
0,415 *). Detektovane fitopatogene gljive na semenu lucerke su uticale na smanjenje ukupne klijavosti, ali ipak rezultati ovih
ispitivanja ukazuju na zadovoljavajuće zdravstveno stanje svih sorata i partija semena lucerke.

The effect of vetch seed size on the seed quality and on seedling vigor

AB  - Common vetch (Vicia sativaL.) in Serbia has the highest economic importance of the species
Vicia. It is mostly cultivated jointly with cereals (oats, wheat, and triticale). It is rarely grown
in pure culture due to flattening. Producers have noticed that the market offer various sized seed. We decided to examine the connection between seed size with seed germination and vigor.
The paper presents two years results (2012 and 2013), of two cultivars of vetch seed
(Vicia sativa L), and the three seed lots of each. Seeds of each lot are divided into three fractions (C- small<3.5 mm; B - medium 3.5 to 5mm: A- large>5 mm. The germination and vigor of seeds are tested from all fractions (A, B, C).Germinated seeds were done in hot bed between the filter paper at 20°C in the dark; energy of germination was checkedon the fifth day, and the germination of the fourteenth day, in accordance with the ISTA rules. Seed size had a significant impact both on the germination, and on the seedling vigor. The impact of the year, the party of seed and the varieties had no significant effect (P≤0.05). Between seed germination and seedling vigor was found high correlation (r).

Genetic and phenotypic correlations among studied traits of different alfalfa cultivars

AB  - In this paper are studied 15 cultivars of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) of different geographical
origins. In the studied alfalfa cultivars were tested for correlations of some important traits in
2007. year. Morphological traits were studied: height of plants (cm), number of stems,
number of internodes per stem, green mass yield per cutting and the total yield of green mass
(g). In the first cut were recorded medium strong positive correlation between the height and
yield of green mass (r = 0.76 *). Heritability properties of plant height was very high in the
first year (2006, h = 80.52) in the first cut, while in the second year of investigation (2007, h =
56.96), in the second cut. Estimation of heritability properties for green mass yield varied
according to age, the highest value was obtained in the first cut 2006. year (h = 72.75),
indicating a high share of genotype, while the lowest value was obtained also in the first cut in
the 2007. year (h = 29.55). Breeding material possesses desirable traits for breeding new
cultivars and with the choice of an appropriate model of breeding possible selection activities
cultivars for specific purposes.

Drying of meadow fescue seeds of different moisture contents: Changes in dormancy and germination

AB  - In the past few years in Europe grass seed production declines. This tendency is especially pronounced in meadow fescue. Seed shedding and therefore yield losses are the problem in seed production. This can be reduced if seed of higher moisture contents is harvested. The impacts of drying temperatures of 70, 60, 50, 40 and 22 degrees C on changes in dormancy and germination of seed harvested with moisture contents of 45, 35 and 25% were observed in the present study. The analysis was done immediately after seed drying, then three months later and eight months later. Seeds with the moisture content of 45% that were dried at 70 degrees C were not dormant at all after harvest, but seeds were damaged, which resulted in reduced germination. Drying temperatures of 40 degrees C and 50 degrees C resulted in maximum germination of seed harvested with 45% moisture after three months. After eight months the best germination of all seeds was obtained at 22 degrees C and 40 degrees C. The seed ageing test confirmed faster deterioration of seeds harvested with higher moisture contents. Seed harvested with 25% moisture and dried at 22 degrees C is the most suitable seed for longer storage.

Thermodynamic characterisation of wheat seedlings, originating from seeds from different fields

AB  - Wheat germination could be affected by different factors, including location. Start growth of seedlings present the energy transformations and the seed substance conversion. The aim of the experiment was to examine differences in germination and growth of wheat seedlings, originating from five fields with similar characteristics, with application of thermodynamic parameters of free energy and entropy. Variations in energy and total germination of wheat seed was under 10%. After eight days of germination testing, the relation between root and shoot at level of fresh and dry matter was 1:1, while only at seedlings from one field it was 1:2 in fresh and 1.5:1 in dry matter. The present differences could be the consequence of the different energy using in seedling. Hydrolysis intensification based on spontaneous reactions and increased order in four days old seedlings could result in increased germination. On the other hand, variations in energetic potential, order degree and hydrolysis of seed substance may not take off biosynthetic reactions in root and shoot. Present data towards that variation in growth of seedlings originating from seeds from different fields could be mainly connected to variations in energy potential inputted by water, but not by synthesized substance. Minimal differences between the individual fields could affect quality of the produced seed material, what was particularly underlined by application of thermodynamic parameters as quality indicators.
AB  - Brojni faktori utiču na klijavost semena pšenice, među koje spada i lokacija. Početni rast klijanaca predstavlja rezultat energetskih transformacija i konverzije semene supstance. Cilj ogleda je bio da se ispitaju razlike u klijavosti i razvoju klijanaca pšenice poreklom iz semena dobijenog sa pet različitih parcela (koje imaju slične osobine), uz primenu termodinamičkih parametara slobodne energije i entropije. Variranje u energiji klijanja i ukupnoj klijavosti semena pšenice nije bilo veće od 10%. Nakon osam dana od početka testiranja klijavosti kod većine klijanaca je odnos između korena i izdanka na nivou sveže i suve materije bio 1:1, dok je jedino kod klijanaca poreklom iz semena samo sa jedne parcele ovaj odnos na nivou sveže materije bio skoro 1:2, a na nivou suve materije 1,5:1. Navedene razlike mogu biti posledica različitog iskorišćenja energije od strane samog klijanca. Intenziviranje hidrolize, na bazi spontanih reakcija, kao i povećane uređenosti kod klijanaca starih četiri dana bi moglo da rezultira nešto većom ukupnom klijavošću. Sa druge strane, variranja u energetskom potencijalu, stepenu uređenosti sistema i hidrolizi semene supstance ne moraju da se odraze i na biosintetske reakcije u korenu i izdanku. Navedeni podaci upućuju da su variranja u rastu klijanaca poreklom iz semena sa različitih parcela uglavnom vezana za variranja energetskog potencijala koji je unet sa vodom, a ne i sintetisane supstance klijanaca. Minimalne razlike između pojedinačnih parcela mogu uticati na kvalitet proizvedenog semenskog materijala, što je posebno naglašeno primenom termodinamičkih parametra, kao pokazatelja kvaliteta.

AB  - During post-harvest maturation, different species vary in the length of dormancy breaking or germination increases. Seed dormancy and slow seedling development often limit establishment of forage grass stands. Seed germination and seedling vigour of Italian ryegrass (Lolium italicum A. Timothy seeds had a maximum germination (88%) and the best seedlings vigour at 90 DAH, which implies that early autumn (September-October) is the best sowing period for freshly harvested seeds of timothy. Timothy seed germination was poor from 270 DAH (73%). The best germination and vigour of Italian ryegrass and cocksfoot seedlings were between 270 and 330 DAH, which equates to spring sowing time (March-April) in the succeeding year. Cocksfoot and Italian ryegrass seeds maintained satisfactory germination levels up to 630 DAH (81%) and 810 DAH (81%), respectively. The data can serve for the determination of a proper storage duration management between harvest and sowing of the tested species under ambient conditions of south-eastern Europe.

AB  - The aim of this study was to determine the effects of substrates and temperatures on Cynara cardunculus seed germination. The tests encompassed the following substrates - filter paper, sand and compost. The following temperature regimes were applied on each substrate used for germination tests: 20/30 degrees C (T(1)), 20 degrees C (T(2)) and 25 degrees C after 10-day chilling at 10 degrees C (T(3)). The analysis of variance showed that there were statistically significant differences between the first counts and the total seed germination, depending on the substrate type, temperature regime and medium x temperature regime interaction The highest germination was detected on filter paper, whereas the lowest was on sand. Furthermore, the highest germination was determined at a constant temperature of 20 degrees C (T(2)), while the lowest, at a temperature regime of 25 degrees C after 10-day chilling at 10 degrees C (T(3)).

Soybean seed vigour under different testing methods

AB  - Seed vigour of four soybean genotypes was studied by a standard and the Cold test method on three soil types. A low temperature and worse substrates caused the reduction of germination, length of the hypocotyls, seedling primary roots and the emergence rate. Seed germination on sand under Cold test conditions was lower by 7-22% in addition to optimum conditions, depending on a genotype. Germination values were lower when the soil was used as a substrate (alongside of sand). The emergence rate was more affected by a substrate (sand and soil) than by temperatures. The initial growth intensity (determined over lengths of roots and hypocotyls) was significantly decreased under unfavourable temperature and the soil conditions. The chernozem was the most favourable, while the pseudogley was the most unfavourable type of soil. Seed vigour testing under optimum conditions provides the information on maximum possible germination and initial growth. Because of that, it is necessary to apply testing methods like field conditions, to get more reliable prognosis about the initial plants growth and development.

Niska temperatura i nepovoljniji substrat su uticali na smanjenje nicanja, dužine hipokotila i primarnog korena i brzinu nicanja. U zavisnosti od genotipa, nicanje u pesku u uslovima Cold testa bilo je niže za 7-22% u odnosu na optimalne uslove. AB  - The objectives of this work were to determine whether and at which seed physiological maturity stage the diquat desiccant affects the tall oat-grass (Arrhenatherum elatius) seed quality and yield, as well as the proper storage period between harvest and sowing. Diquat desiccation was evaluated in applications during milk or dough seed maturation stages. Seeds conventionally produced and stored under traditional storage conditions were used for the analyses. Seed samples were drawn every 30(th) day after harvest (DAH). After the 240(th) DAH, samples were drawn every 90(th) day up the to 690(th) DAH. The highest yield were obtained by desiccation applied at the beginning of the seed dough stage, with a satisfactory seed quality. Both final germination and seedling growth parameters achieved their maximum values between 180(th) and 240(th) DAH. Oat-grass seeds preserved satisfactory level of final germination (75%) up to 420(th) DAH. The application of diquat desiccant at the beginning of seed dough maturity stage can be a good solution for seed production of tall oat-grass. Early spring is the best sowing period for freshly harvested seeds of tall oat-grass regarding germination and seedling growth.

AB  - After-ripening is a complex enzymatic and biochemical process resulting in the breakage of non-deep physiological dormancy. The experiment was set up to identify the minimum duration of storage after harvest for completion of after-ripening in meadow (Festuca pratensis Huds.), tall (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and red fescue (Festuca rubra L.). The seeds were stored under ware-house conditions for 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210 and 240 days after harvest (DAH). After the storage periods, the seeds were tested for germination and the primary root length, shoot length and seedlings biomass were measured. The final counts in all three species amounted to 60-65% germination immediately after harvest, suggesting a medium level of embryonic dormancy. The after-ripening during storage improved the final germination in all three species with decreasing intensity. In meadow fescue, the final germination was significantly improved up to 150 DAH, while the seedling size did not change significantly. In tall and red fescue, after-ripening significantly improved the final germination up to 120 DAH, while the seedling size variables reached maximum values after 150 DAH. The obtained data can serve for the determination of proper storage duration management between harvest and sowing (autumn/spring) of the tested fescue species under agro-ecological conditions of south-eastern Europe.

AB  - A dynamics of seed mass defect and a previous process of the water input during germination was determined by a trial with five soybean cultivars and four sunflower hybrids, following the ISTA Rules. It was noticed that leaching, which led to the mass defect (smDef), was permanent during 8 and 10 days of soybean and sunflower germination, respectively. The two confronted processes, the liquid input and the solid output, could be operable at the level of a thermodynamic parameter of Gibbs free energy (G), i.e. net supplemental free energy (netGspl). Hence, this type of free energy - net supplement, differentiates in two examined plant species (between the first and the last day of germination): soybean in a range from -53.23 to -69.82 J mol-1 seedling-1 and sunflower from -46.35 to -91.94 J mol-1 seedling-1. Furthermore, the daily change of net supplemental energy underlined the three points ingenotypes of both species: after the first, before the last day of germination and in the maximum (-67.50 and -75.25 J mol-1 seedling-1 in soybean, then, -94.97 and -103.79 J mol-1 seedling-1 in sunflower) between the 4th and the 7th day of germination depending on a genotype.
AB  - U ovom radu izneta su kvantitativna određivanja dinamike gubitka mase semena tokom klijanja kod pet sorti soje i četiri hibrida suncokreta po ISTA pravilima. Kako je metoda određivanja masenog defekta semena davala i dinamiku usvajanja vode, ta dva podatka prevedena u Gibsovu slobodnu energiju omogućila su operaciju sa dva suprotstavljena procesa: usvajanja tečne i ispuštanja čvrste supstance, koje su oduzimanjem dale neto energiju unetu u sistem seme-klijanac. Pokazalo se da neto, dopunska slobodna energija u opsegu od -53.23 do -69.82 J mol-1 klijanac-1 za soju (od prvog do osmog dana) i od -46.35 do -91.94 J mol-1 klijanac-1 za suncokret (od prvog do desetog dana), daje razliku između dve ispitivane vrste. AB  - The 2,4-D was applied as hormetic, to increase germination ability and growth of seedlings originated from 19 maize inbred lines seeds (germination between 2 and 97%). The seeds were soaked in solution of 2,4-D, diluted to hormetic concentration. After germination capacity was determined, normal seedlings were fractionated into: root, shoot and seed rest, in order to establish fresh and dry weights and volume of free water in them. Sum of hydrolysis, biosynthesis and free energy were calculated. Increased germination percentage, by 2,4-D was not linear for all germination values, meaning that germination was more than doubled in seeds with initial germination below 10%. On the other hand, germination increase was only 2% in seeds with initial germination over 90%. Additionally, fresh weight of root and shoot increased up to 90 and 49%, respectively as consequence of promoted hydrolysis and biosynthesis. The high values of free energy (> +7 KJ) in control seedlings indicated that potential energy was spent, thus lowering growth and biosynthesis levels. The 2,4-D treated seedlings, with potential energy about +/- 0.1 KJ point out that processes in seedling are spontaneous, i.e. are oscillating about equilibrium, enabling more efficient utilization of seed substance, affirmed by elevated biosynthesis and growth.

Chemical composition and quality of seeds of ZP maize hybrids with specific properties

AB  - In recent times the large-scale participation of maize in processing has increased. Considering the directions of nutritive and technological studies in the following period, significant changes' in its consumption are expected. The achievements in breeding provide, via specific-purpose growing of hybrids of special and unique grain traits, the expansion of the range of highly valuable food and ecologically safe products. Recognizing obtained results as well as perspectives of the research development, the aim of the present study was to analyze the chemical composition and quality of seeds of ZP maize hybrids with specific properties. The comparative survey of chemical composition and seed quality of three different maize hybrids with specific properties (ZP 74b, ZP 611k and ZP 633) and a hybrid of a standard chemical grain composition (ZP 434) is presented in this paper.
AB  - U novije vreme naročito u svetskim razmerama zapaža se sve veće učešće kukuruza u preradi. S obzirom na pravce nutritivnih i tehnoloških istraživanja u narednom periodu očekuju se značajnije promene u njegovoj potrošnji. Dostignuća u oplemenjivanju omogućavaju da se namenskim gajenjem hibrida posebnih i jedinstvenih karakteristika zrna značajno proširi asortiman visokovredne hrane i ekološki bezbednih proizvoda. Sagledavajući do sada ostvarene rezultate kao i perspektiva razvoja istraživačkog rada na unapređenju proizvodnje i korišćenja kukuruza za cilj ovog rada je postavljeno da se ispita hemijski sastav i kvalitet semena ZP hibrida specifičnih svojstava. U radu je dat uporedni prikaz hemijskog sastava i kvaliteta semena tri različita hibrida specifičnih svojstava (ZP 74b, ZP 611 k i ZP 633) ijednog hibrida standardnog hemijskog sastava zrna (ZP 434).

AB  - The efficiency of xenobiotic 2,4-D was examined in light of hormesis (growth-stimulating effect at low application rates) on the seeds of two maize inbreds submitted to accelerated ageing (AA) treatment. The AA lowered the germination and seedling growth via retaining the mass in the seed rest. The examined 2,4-D dilution levels increased germination and seedling growth with higher input of water in fresh mass. It could be supposed that the stimulative effect of 2,4-D was in reparation of the damages originating from AA treatment and the running of the biosystems' water regime.

Changes of antioxidants in maize seeds during their accelerated ageing

AB  - The ageing processes of living organisms, including seeds, relate, to a great extent, to the activity of free radicals. The aim of this study was to investigate changes of the most important antioxidative substances carotenoids, phenolic and thiolic compounds and reduced glutathione (GSH) in seeds of six maize genotypes with different ability to maintain germination. The germination decrease in all maize genotypes was followed by the decrease of all observed antioxidants. The greatest decrease was observed in GSH and thiols, while change of phenolic compounds was sigmoidal. The analysis of the share of certain observed antioxidants in the antioxidative capacity shows that maintenance of germination of all maize genotypes depended on changes of the GSH content.
AB  - Proces starenja svih živih organizama, pa i semena u velikoj meri je vezan za slobodnoradikalsku aktivnost. Cilj rada bio je da se ispitaju promene najznačajnijih antioksidativnih materija: karotinoida, fenolnih i tiolnih jedinjenja i redukovanog glutationa (GSH) u semenu šest genotipova kukuruza sa različitim očuvanjem klijavosti. Pad klijavosti semena prati i pad sadržaja svih ispitivanih antioksidanata, uz najizraženiji pad GSH i tiolnih jedinjenja i sigmoidalnu promenu fenolnih jedinjenja. Analizom pojedinačnog udela ispitanih antioksidanata u antioksidativnom kapacitetu zaključili smo da održanje klijavosti svih genotipova kukuruza u najvećoj meri zavisi od promena sadržaja GSH.

Influence of harvesting and processing methods on organic viability of soybean seed

AB  - Organic viability of soybean seed for three soybean varieties - elite (Bosa, ZPS 015 and Nena) depending on methods of manipulation with seeds during harvesting and processing phase were determined in this paper. Trial was conducted in Zemun Polje during 1999; manual and mechanized harvesting or processing methods were applied. Seed germination was tested using ISTA methods (Standard method and Cold test). Following parameters were evaluated: germination viability, germination, rate-speed of emergence, length of hypocotile and main root Rate-speed of emergence was based on number of emerged plants per day. Length of hypocotile or root and percent of germination determined vigour index. Based on obtained results it maybe concluded that methods of seed manipulation during harvesting or processing phase were influenced on soybean seed quality parameters evaluated. Ways of seed manipulation - methods evaluated were influenced organic viability of soybean seed by decreasing germination viability, total germination and length of main root.
AB  - U radu je ispitivana životna sposobnost semena tri sorte soje-elite (Bosa, ZPS 015 i Nena) u zavisnosti od načina manipulisanja semenom u toku žetve i dorade. Seme je proizvedeno u Zemun Polju u 1999. godini, a žetva i dorada su obavljene ručno i mašinski. Za ispitivanje klijavosti korišćene su ISTA metode (standardna i Cold test). Ispitivani su sledeći parametri: energija klijanja, klijavost, brzina nicanja, dužina bipokotila i primarnog korena. Krzina nicanja utvrđena je na osnovu broja izniklih biljaka po danu. Indeks vigoroznosti je determinisan na osnovu dužine hipokotila i korena i procenat klijavosti. Na osnovu dobijenih rezultata može se zaključiti da su načini manipulisanja semenom u toku žetve i dorade uticali na ispitivane parametre kvaliteta semena soje. Načini manipulisanja semenom i metode ispitivanja uticali su na životnu sposobnost semena soje smanjivanjem urednosti energije klijanja, klijavosti i dužine primarnog korena.
