Hydraulic properties of fine-textured soils in lowland ecosystems of Western Serbia vary depending on land use

AB  - Land use in agriculture can alter the physical, chemical and biological properties of soils, but little is known how
it affects the hydraulic properties of the fine-textured soils of lowland agroecosystems in continental climates.
This research assesses the impact of long-term (>100 years) continuous use of natural meadows and arable land,
after conversion of native mixed deciduous forests, on hydraulic properties such as water retention, pore-size
distribution, saturated hydraulic conductivity, and bulk density. The research was conducted on Fluvic Phaeozems
in the valley of the Kolubara River, western Serbia. Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples from three
different land use systems (forest, meadow, and arable land) and three different locations were collected at 0–15,
15–30, and 30–45 cm soil depth. Significant effects of different land uses were observed for bulk density, total
porosity, macroporosity, mesoporosity, microporosity, air-filled porosity, field water capacity, plant available
water capacity and saturated hydraulic conductivity at 0–15 cm soil depth, but a much smaller effect was
observed at 15–30 cm. The water content estimated by the van Genuchten model was similar to the measured
water content (R2 = 0.932–0.972). At 30–45 cm soil depth, land use only significantly affected a few of the
examined variables. Dexter's soil physical quality index (S-index) also detected degradation of soil physical
quality after conversion from forest to agroecosystems. In summary, the conversion of native forests into agricultural
land tends to cause considerable change in the hydraulic properties and soil physical quality of finetextured
soils in lowland continental agroecosystems, which could have an adverse effect on crop yield and
the environment.

Cereal grain with low acrylamide formation potential as a raw material for safer cereal-based food products in Serbia

AB  - The presence of acrylamide, a mutagen and a Group 2A carcinogen, in food, is a health concern
that might raise cancer risk. Acrylamide is mainly formed in the Maillard reaction between free
asparagine and reducing sugars, during industrial thermal food processing or home cooking, at
a temperature over 120°C. The European Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/2158 established
mitigation measures and benchmarks for acrylamide levels in some food categories, which
were incorporated into the Serbian regulation. Research shows that cereal-based products may
bring about 20-60% of acrylamide intake. In Serbia, there are no guidelines for the cultivation
of cereals with a reduced potential for acrylamide formation. Knowing that the amount of free
asparagine is proportional to the formation of acrylamide in the majority of food products,
one of the key approaches is to select the ingredients with a lower level of asparagine. Studies
indicate that applying foliar fertilizers with increased sulfur content in some cereals influences
the decrease of free asparagine synthesis in grain, lowering the acrylamide potential in cerealbased foods. Furthermore, the choice of the appropriate raw material and production parameters
can significantly influence the formation of acrylamide in food products. This review aims to
provide insight into current strategies for the mitigation of acrylamide in cereal-based foods, as
the status of acrylamide in Serbian regulations
AB  - Prisustvo akrilamida, mutagena i kancerogena grupe 2A, u hrani, predstavlja zdravstveni problem koji može povećati rizik od raka. Akrilamid se uglavnom formira u Majarovoj reakciji između slobodnog asparagina i redukujuc'ih šec'era, tokom industrijske termičke obrade hrane ili kuvanja kod kuće, na temperaturi iznad 120°C. Uredbom Evropske komisije (EU) 2017/2158 su utvrđene mere ublažavanja i granične vrednosti za sadržaj akrilamida u nekim kategorijama hrane, koje su uvršćene u srpsku regulativu. Istraživanja pokazuju da proizvodi na bazi žitarica mogu dovesti do 20-60% unosa akrilamida. U Srbiji ne postoje smernice za gajenje žitarica sa smanjenim potencijalom za stvaranje akrilamida. S' obzirom na to da je količina slobodnog asparagina proporcionalna formiranju akrilamida u većini prehrambenih proizvoda, jedan od ključnih pristupa predstavlja odabir sastojaka nižeg sadržaja asparagina. Istraživanja pokazuju da kod nekih žitarica, primena folijarnog đubriva sa povec'anim sadržajem sumpora utiče na smanjenje sinteze slobodnog asparagina u zrnu, smanjujuc'i potencijal akrilamida u namirnicama na bazi žitarica. Takođe, izbor odgovarajuće sirovine i proizvodnih parametara može značajno uticati na formiranje akrilamida u prehrambenim proizvodima.Ovaj pregledni rad ima za cilj da pruži uvid u aktuelne strategije za snižavanje akrilamida u namirnicama na bazi žitarica i status akrilamida u srpskim propisima.

Quality parameters of maize hybrids intended for silage production

AB  - This study's primary objective was to assess the quality parameters of fifteen different genotypes of Serbian maize hybrids in
order to establish whether they were suitable for making high-quality silage for ruminant feed. The study was carried out as a
two-year field experiment at the Maize Research Institute in Zemun Polje, Serbia. Laboratory analyses included the yield
structure of the examined maize hybrids, the evaluation of the composition of lignocellulosic fiber and the percentage of their
ratios, as well as the in vitro dry matter digestibility and NDF digestibility of the whole plant samples. The Fisher's LSD test was
used to statistically analyse the data, which were then reported as the mean and standard deviation of at least three independent
replicates. The graphical representation of correlations among the observed parameters used the principal component analysis
(PCA) method. All maize hybrids have displayed high-quality characteristics, which are required for the production of highquality silage.
AB  - Osnovni cilј ovog istraživanja bio je da se ispitaju svojstva petnaest različitih genotipova hibrida kukuruza iz Srbije kako bi se utvrdila njihova pogodnost za proizvodnju visokokvalitetne silaže za ishranu preživara. Istraživanje je sprovedeno u dvogodišnjem polјskom ogledu na lokaciji Instituta za kukuruz u Zemun Polјu, Srbija, a laboratorijske analize su obuhvatile strukturu prinosa ispitivanih hibrida kukuruza, procenu sastava lignoceluloznih vlakana i njihovih procentualnih odnosa, kao i in vitro svarlјivost suve materije i svarlјivost NDF-a uzoraka cele bilјke. Podaci su statistički obrađeni korišćenjem ANOVA analize varijanse sa Fišerovim LSD testom i prikazani kao srednja vrednost ± standardno odstupanje od najmanje tri nezavisna ponavlјanja. Analiza glavnih komponenata (PCA) primenjena je za vizuelno predstavlјanje korelacija između posmatranih parametara. Svi hibridi kukuruza su pokazali povolјna svojstva koja su preduslov za proizvodnju visokokvalitetne silaže.

Study of maize yield stability with nonparametric methods

AB  - High and stabile yield in different production environments is priority in maize breeding.
New statistical methods are constantly being sought to accompany analysis of variance, in
order to achieve more reliable hybrid assessment. In this study nonparametric stability
analysis is applied in order to assess GxE interaction for yield of 36 commercial maize
hybrids. The experiment was set up at five locations in Serbia for three years according to
the Randomised complete block design in three replications. Yield stability of
investigated genotypes was analysed by stability parameters Si (1), Si (2), Si (3), Si (6) TOP
and RS. Analysis of variance identified highly significant F values for all experimental
factors. Bredenkamp method confirmed the existence of non-crossover GxE interaction,
for maize yield. Hybrid ZPH15 achieved the most stable yield based on parameters Si (1)
and Si (2). According to parameter Si (3) it was ZPH5, while based on parameter Si (6) it was
ZPH34. The highest overall yield achieved ZPH36 (11.18 t ha-1
), which was quite
unstable (rank 24 in parameters Si (1) and Si (2)), and very unstable (rank 34 in parameters
Si (3) and Si (6)). The most stable hybrids had average yields. In total, the hybrid ZPH23
had the best average rank (15.93). Based on TOP parameter, ZPH36 had the best rank
(yield), followed by ZPH11, ZPH20, ZPH21 and ZPH9. However, RS parameter revealed
that ZPH21 was the most stable hybrid, so taking into account both TOP and RS
parameters this is the most productive and the most stable hybrid. Based on this research,
TOP and RS are the best parameters for selecting new maize hybrids for production in
particular environment. In case of identical TOP value, the genotype with the lowest RS value should be selected. The parameters Si (1), Si (2), Si (3) and Si (6) can be used as
alternative methods for the selection of genotypes with moderate yield and high stability.
AB  - U ovom radu primenjena je neparametarska analiza stabilnosti kako bi se procenila GxE
interakcija za prinos 36 hibrida kukuruza. Eksperiment je postavljen na pet lokacija u Srbiji u
trajanju od tri godine po potpuno slučajnom blok dizajnu (RCBD) u tri ponavljanja. Stabilnost
prinosa ispitivanih genotipova analizirana je parametrima stabilnosti Si (1), Si (2), Si (3), Si (6), TOP
i RS. Hibrid ZPH15 je postigao najstabilniji prinos na osnovu parametara Si (1) i Si (2), prema
parametru Si (3) ZPH5, dok je na osnovu parametra Si (6) to bio ZPH34. Najrodniji hibrid ukupno
u ogledu bio je ZPH36 sa prosečnim prinosom od 11,180 t/ha, koji je na osnovu ranga
parametara Si (1) i Si (2) bio dosta nestabilan (rang 24), a na osnovu ranga parametara Si (3) i Si(6)
veoma nestabilan (rang 34). Najstabilniji hibridi imali su prinos oko proseka. Ukupno, najbolji
prosečan rang imao je hibrid ZPH 23 (15,93). Na osnovu TOP parametra najbolji rang (prinos)
imao je ZPH36, a zatim ZPH11, ZPH20, ZPH21 i ZPH9. Međutim, RS parametar je pokazao da
je ZPH21 najstabilniji hibrid, tako da je uzimajući u obzir i TOP i RS parametre ovo
najproduktivniji i najstabilniji hibrid. Na osnovu ovog istraživanja, od svih posmatranih
neparametarskih parametara, parametri TOP i RS pokazali su se kao najbolji za odabir novih
hibrida kukuruza za gajenje u određenom regionu. U slučaju identične TOP vrednosti, treba
izabrati genotip sa najnižom RS vrednošću, dok se parametri Si (1), Si (2), Si (3) i Si (6) mogu
koristiti kao alternativne metode za selekciju genotipova sa umerenim prinosom i visokom
stabilnošću.

abstract = "High and stabile yield in different production environments is priority in maize breeding.
New statistical methods are constantly being sought to accompany analysis of variance, in
order to achieve more reliable hybrid assessment. In this study nonparametric stability
analysis is applied in order to assess GxE interaction for yield of 36 commercial maize
hybrids. The experiment was set up at five locations in Serbia for three years according to
the Randomised complete block design in three replications. Yield stability of
investigated genotypes was analysed by stability parameters Si (1), Si (2), Si (3), Si (6) TOP
and RS. Analysis of variance identified highly significant F values for all experimental
factors. Bredenkamp method confirmed the existence of non-crossover GxE interaction,
for maize yield. Hybrid ZPH15 achieved the most stable yield based on parameters Si (1)
and Si (2). According to parameter Si (3) it was ZPH5, while based on parameter Si (6) it was
ZPH34. The highest overall yield achieved ZPH36 (11.18 t ha-1
), which was quite
unstable (rank 24 in parameters Si (1) and Si (2)), and very unstable (rank 34 in parameters
Si (3) and Si (6)). The most stable hybrids had average yields. In total, the hybrid ZPH23
had the best average rank (15.93). Based on TOP parameter, ZPH36 had the best rank
(yield), followed by ZPH11, ZPH20, ZPH21 and ZPH9. However, RS parameter revealed
that ZPH21 was the most stable hybrid, so taking into account both TOP and RS
parameters this is the most productive and the most stable hybrid. Based on this research,
TOP and RS are the best parameters for selecting new maize hybrids for production in
particular environment. In case of identical TOP value, the genotype with the lowest RS value should be selected. The parameters Si (1), Si (2), Si (3) and Si (6) can be used as
alternative methods for the selection of genotypes with moderate yield and high stability., U ovom radu primenjena je neparametarska analiza stabilnosti kako bi se procenila GxE
interakcija za prinos 36 hibrida kukuruza. Eksperiment je postavljen na pet lokacija u Srbiji u
trajanju od tri godine po potpuno slučajnom blok dizajnu (RCBD) u tri ponavljanja. Stabilnost
prinosa ispitivanih genotipova analizirana je parametrima stabilnosti Si (1), Si (2), Si (3), Si (6), TOP
i RS. Hibrid ZPH15 je postigao najstabilniji prinos na osnovu parametara Si (1) i Si (2), prema
parametru Si (3) ZPH5, dok je na osnovu parametra Si (6) to bio ZPH34. Najrodniji hibrid ukupno
u ogledu bio je ZPH36 sa prosečnim prinosom od 11,180 t/ha, koji je na osnovu ranga
parametara Si (1) i Si (2) bio dosta nestabilan (rang 24), a na osnovu ranga parametara Si (3) i Si(6)
veoma nestabilan (rang 34). Najstabilniji hibridi imali su prinos oko proseka. Ukupno, najbolji
prosečan rang imao je hibrid ZPH 23 (15,93). Na osnovu TOP parametra najbolji rang (prinos)
imao je ZPH36, a zatim ZPH11, ZPH20, ZPH21 i ZPH9. Međutim, RS parametar je pokazao da
je ZPH21 najstabilniji hibrid, tako da je uzimajući u obzir i TOP i RS parametre ovo
najproduktivniji i najstabilniji hibrid. Na osnovu ovog istraživanja, od svih posmatranih
neparametarskih parametara, parametri TOP i RS pokazali su se kao najbolji za odabir novih
hibrida kukuruza za gajenje u određenom regionu. U slučaju identične TOP vrednosti, treba
izabrati genotip sa najnižom RS vrednošću, dok se parametri Si (1), Si (2), Si (3) i Si (6) mogu
koristiti kao alternativne metode za selekciju genotipova sa umerenim prinosom i visokom
stabilnošću.",

AB  - Four commercial wholegrain flours made from differently colored kernels of maize genotypes produced in Maize Research
Institute "Zemun Polje" were used as the subject of this study. Values of major chemical components as well as mineral nutrients,
antioxidants and some vitamins of wholegrain flours obtained from white dent hybrid, yellow popping maize hybrid, red dent variety
and blue popping maize landrace are presented. All flours had high fiber content (6.9-10.4%), while total protein ranged from 8.5%
to 12.2%. A high level of anthocyanins was determined in blue popping maize wholegrain flour (910.0 mg CGE/kg), whereas yellow
popping maize flour had a high content of total carotenoids (26.5 mg βCE/kg). Total antioxidant capacity was the lowest in white
(15.50 mmol Trolox Eq/kg) and the highest in blue popping maize flour (37.6 mmol Trolox Eq/kg). All investigated wholegrain flours
contained high levels of potassium and magnesium, as well as high content of trace elements, namely iron, zinc, copper and
manganese. The maize flour is naturally gluten-free, which makes it highly suitable for persons susceptible to a gluten allergy and
those with celiac disease. These results indicate that the wholegrain ZP maize flours can be used as functional food ingredients.
AB  - Kao predmet ovog istraživanja korišćena su četiri komercijalna integralna brašna dobijena od genotipova kukuruza različite boje
zrna proizvedenih u Institutu za kukuruz „Zemun Polje“. Prikazane su vrednosti glavnih nutritivnih parametara kao i mineralnih
materija, antioksidanata i pojedinih vitamina integralnog brašna dobijenog od hibrida belog zubana, hibrida kukuruza žutog
kokičara, sorte crvenog zubana i populacije kukuruza plavog kokičara. Sva brašna su imala visok sadržaj vlakana (6,9-10,4%), dok
se sadržaj proteina kretao od 8,5% do 12,2%. Visok nivo antocijana utvrđen je u integralnom brašnu kukuruza plavog zrna (910,00
mg CGE/kg, pri čemu je u žutom kukuruznom brašnu utvrđen visok sadržaj karotenoida (26,5 mg βCE/kg). Ukupni antioksidativni
kapacitet bio je najniži u belom (15,50 mmol Trolox Ek/kg), a najviši u plavom kukuruznom brašnu (37,60 mmol Trolox Eq/kg). Sva

Integrated weed managment in maize: crop rotation and PRE herbicides

AB  - Crop rotation is a simple and effective part of an Integrated Weed Management (IWM) system. This approach makes it possible to rotate herbicides with different modes of action (MOA), avoiding or postponing herbicide resistance. Besides all the known advantages and benefits, it is still not widely used in maize production. In Serbia, about 30% of total maize production is a continuous cropping. The aim of this research was to test the benefits of growing maize in crop rotation with winter wheat compared with a continuous cropping, combined with pre-emergence herbicide application. Field trials started in 2009, and five maize-winter wheat rotations have been completed. Weeds were controlled with an herbicide mixture of isoxaflutole and S-metolachlor, applied at either the full label rate or half rate, while one plot was kept weed free (manually), and one was a control. Applying IWM decreased the fresh biomass of weeds and then density by 96% and 97%, respectively. In continuous maize, perennial weeds became dominant after the first rotation. Crop rotation significantly influenced maize productive parameters, decreasing the variation in leaf area index and grain yield, and increasing the magnitude of these parameters with the number of cycles. The biggest differences in the analyzed parameters were observed in 2015, 2017 and 2019, indicating many positive long - term henefits of crop rotation on maize leaf area index and grain yield.

Spray drift study from mesotrione and rimsulfuron+thifensulfuron-metyl to various crops

AB  - Herbicides are the most frequently used method for weed control. Off - target movements follow every herbicide application. Because the launch of ALS- and HPPD - tolerant crops will increase the treated area, there is a need to point out the possible negative consequences of any particle drift from those herbicides. The gap in the existing literature suggests that this issue needs to be addressed. Since drift can injure susceptible crops, reduce pesticide efficacy, and increase environmental pollution, it must be minimised. Drift happens with every pesticide application and must be mitigated. Various factors influence drift such as nozzle type, working pressure, and boom height, can be managed. Others, such as wind, are not easy to manage. In our study, an herbicide tank - mixture of mesotrione with rimsulfuron plus thifensulfuron-methyl was sprayed in a low-speed wind tunnel to simulate drift. The airspeed was set at 4.4 m s-1, representing the labelled upper limit for applications. The herbicide solution was sprayed through XR and TTI nozzles. Eight crops (cantaloupe, cotton, green bean, pumpkin, soybean, sunflower, wheat, and watermelon) were exposed to herbicide drift treatments and biomass data were collected 28 days after the applications. Droplet size spectra and tracer depositions were evaluated for each nozzle. Tracer deposition was higher in all downwind distances (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, and 12 m) from the XR nozzle in comparison to the TTI nozzle. Therefore, greater injuries were recorded for applications with the XR nozzle and lower injuries for applications through the TTI nozzle from 1 to 12 m downwind. Soybean and wheat were the two most tolerant crops, while the two most susceptible were cantaloupe and green beans. Because drift can injure crops, it is very important to mitigate drift in mesotrione and rimsulfuron plus thifensulfuron-methyl applications. This can be done by selecting the appropriate nozzle and ensuring optimal distances between crops.

Mogućnosti optimizacije primene herbicida u Srbiji

AB  - Nedostatak novih aktivnih supstanci herbicida na tržištu, praćen pojavom rezistentnih korova na postojeće herbicide, kao i klimatske promene koje utiču na korove, čine suzbijanje korova veoma izazovnim. Pored ovoga, plan Evropske komisije da se smanji upotreba herbicida za 50 % do 2030. zahteva pronalaženje rešenja za uspešno suzbijanje korova uz manje oslanjanje na hemijske mere. Jedna od mogućnosti koja je na raspolaganju je da se uz herbicide u rezervoar prskalice doda adjuvant kako bi usvajanje herbicida od strane korova bilo efikasnije i kako bi se herbicidi primenili u manjim količima. U ovom radu ćemo ukazati na potencijalne pogodnosti adjuvanata u cilju povećanja efikasnosti herbicida.
AB  - The lack of new herbicide active substances on the market, accompanied by the emergence of resistant weeds to existing herbicides, as well as climate changes that affect weeds make weed control very challenging. In addition to this, the European Commission's plan to reduce the use of herbicides by 50 % by 2030 conditions the need to find solutions for successful weed control. One of the options available is to add an adjuvant to the herbicides in the sprayer tank in order to increase the uptake of the herbicide by the weeds. In this paper, we will point out the potential benefits of adjuvants in order to increase herbicide efficacy.

Pored ovoga, plan Evropske komisije da se smanji upotreba herbicida za 50 % do 2030. zahteva pronalaženje rešenja za uspešno suzbijanje korova uz manje oslanjanje na hemijske mere. Jedna od mogućnosti koja je na raspolaganju je da se uz herbicide u rezervoar prskalice doda adjuvant kako bi usvajanje herbicida od strane korova bilo efikasnije i kako bi se herbicidi primenili u manjim količima. U ovom radu ćemo ukazati na potencijalne pogodnosti adjuvanata u cilju povećanja efikasnosti herbicida., The lack of new herbicide active substances on the market, accompanied by the emergence of resistant weeds to existing herbicides, as well as climate changes that affect weeds make weed control very challenging. In addition to this, the European Commission's plan to reduce the use of herbicides by 50 % by 2030 conditions the need to find solutions for successful weed control. One of the options available is to add an adjuvant to the herbicides in the sprayer tank in order to increase the uptake of the herbicide by the weeds.
