AB - Plant genetic resources of any country represent its natural wealth. Gene Bank
of the Maize Research Institute "Zemun Polje" with over 5,000 samples
represents national guardian of such. Local maize populations, tributing to their
diversity, represent a key source of desirable traits for breeding programs, such
as nutritional values for protein, starch and lipids. Today’s corn hybrids are
based on a narrow genetic base, where in race for yield, often insufficient
attention is paid to the nutritional composition of the hybrids themselves.
Correct selection of material from the Gene Bank can only be achieved with
pre-breeding selection. Such prebreeding would cover wide material and
should detect and reduce it to a desirable and more acceptable volume that can
further be introduced into commercial breeding programs. This paper covered
analysis of protein, starch and lipid content in grain of 31 local maize
populations, crossed with two commercial testers ZPL-217 (BSSS) and ZPL-
255/75-5 (Lancaster Sure Crop) with line x tester method used for combinig
ability calculation. According to the results the best combiner for higher lipid
content is A3 landrace with a GCA value of 0.33*, for protein content landraces
A9 and A 38 with GCA values of 0.51* and 0.57*, respectively, were found.
As for populations A 17 and A 37 with the GCA values of 1.52* and 1.36*,
respectively, they proved to be the best combiners for starch. Mentioned
populations showed significant GCA values with a probability level of 0.05,
showing their possible significance in further breeding application.

AB - Genetska konstitucija, uslovi gajenja, uključujući agrotehniku i manipulaciju
ispitivanih tokom 5 godina u mikro i makro ogledima; ii) utvrde međusobni odnosi
ispitivanih osobina u zavisnosti od efekta hibrida, godine i roditeljskih komponti.
zrna. Hibridi oca LM3 imali su veću apsolutnu masu, udeo mekog endosperma
i otpornost na mlevenje, a niži indeks apsorpcije vode i udeo perikarpa. Hibridi
majke LF2 su imali veći udeo endosperma, dok su hibridi majke LF1 imali veći udeo
klice i ulja u zrnu.
Istovremeno oplemenjivanje
u pravcu povećanja sadržaja skroba i ulja bilo bi otežano višestrukim negativnim
odnosima ove dve osobine. Međutim, iako su utvrđene statistički značajne razlike
u parametrima kvaliteta, one nisu napravile kvalitativnu razliku u proizvodnim
ogledima.
AB - Genetic background, environmental conditions, agricultural practices and
post-harvesting influence maize grain quality. The quality requirements differ
from one use to another, and need to be defined in accordance with the methods
applied in processing and utilisation. The objectives of this research were: i) to
evaluate yield and grain quality traits of six elite maize hybrids, tested during 5-year
micro and macro trials; ii) to determine the evaluated traits relationshipaccording
to hybrid-, year- and parental components-dependence pattern. The year effect
greatly influenced the variation of all examined parameters, the male effect was not
significant for yield components, while the effects of both, male and female parent
were significant for most of the examined quality traits. PC analysis indicated a
significant effect of the hybrid’s genetic composition on physical parameters and
kernel structure. Hybrids of male LM3 had higher 1000 kernelweight, portion of
soft endosperm and resistance to grinding, and lower water absorption index and
pericarp portion. Hybrids of female LF2 had a higher portion of endosperm, while
hybrids of female LF1 had higher portion of germ and oil in the grain. Accordingly,
simultaneous breeding for increased starch and protein resulted in yield increase,
forincrease protein and oil content in yield reduction, while simultaneous breeding
for increased starch and oil content is hampered by multiple negative relationships.
Although significant differences in quality parameters were determined, they did
not make a qualitative difference in production trials. Therefore, it is necessary to
form special breeding programmes for different purposes.

AB - Together with rice and wheat, maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most significant cereal crops worldwide. Dent, flint, floury, popping, and sweet maize are the five main categories of commercially available maize hybrids. Along with white, yellow, and orange, red, blue, purple, and brown are other possible grain colors. Grain quality is only of secondary value in the hybrid maize breeding process because the focus is mostly on raising the level and consistency of the yield. The genetic basis of commercial maize hybrids has significantly narrowed as a result of the hybrid breeding process itself, as well as economic factors and rivalry between breeding companies. On the market at the same time, there are often just a few closely related hybrids with comparable technological and nutrient standards.
The aim of this study was to analyze how 33 maize hybrids' physical characteristics and chemical composition were affected by genotype. The hybrids were grown in 2022 at Zemun Polje, Serbia, and evaluated in the laboratory of the Department of Food Technology and Biochemistry of the Maize Research Institute “Zemun Polje“. Manual dissection of the grains revealed that the yellow dent genotype ZP 6066 had the lowest content of pericarp fraction (5.77%), the popcorn genotype ZP 611k had the highest content of pericarp fraction (10.38%), the sweet hybrid genotype ZP 504su had the highest content of germ fraction (16.09%), and the popcorn genotype ZP 6119k had the highest content of endosperm (84.13%). A crucial physical parameter of grain quality, the 1000-kernel weight ranged from 120.98 g (popcorn hybrid ZP 617k) to 398.13 g (yellow dent ZP 7072). The results showed that the starch, protein, oil, crude fiber, and ash contents of 33 different maize genotypes varied between intervals: from 56.79% (sweet hybrid ZP 504su) to 70.38% (yellow dent hybrid ZP 4123); from 10.95% (yellow dent ZP 6566) to 13.28% (ZP 504su); from 3.14% (yellow popcorn ZP 611k) to 7.37% (ZP 504su). Standard deviations of the respective chemical properties were: 2.45%, 0.62%, 0.68%, 0.31%, and 0.08%. Future breeding initiatives aimed at developing novel and enhanced genotypes of maize hybrids with higher grain quality attributes for various applications may find considerable value in our findings. It is crucial to create new breeding programs that use more focused methods to produce hybrids of maize that are meant to serve particular functions. Enabling the production of hybrids with improved nutritional and technological quality of both the starting material as well as the parental lines should receive special consideration.

AB - A high level of genetic purity in crop varieties must be achieved and maintained for
agronomic performance, encouraging investment and innovation in plant breeding and ensuring that
the improvements in productivity and quality imparted by breeders are delivered to the consumer.
Since the success of hybrid seed production is dependent upon the genetic purity of the parental lines,
in this study, the experimental F1exp maize hybrid and its parental inbreeds were used as a model
system to examine the discriminative power of morphological, biochemical and SSR markers for
seed purity assay. The highest number of off-type plants was estimated by morphological markers.
According to the comparison of prolamins and albumins banding patterns of parental and derived
F1exp seeds, genetic impurities could not be detected. Molecular analysis detected two types of
genetic profile irregularity. Beside its use for verifying varieties of maize, report on umc1545 primer
pair ability to detect non-specific bands (i.e., off-types), in both the maternal component and F1exp,
which is the first report on this issue yet, strongly supports the recommendation of this SSR marker
use for more accurate and time-efficient maize hybrids and parental lines genetic pyrity testing

AB - Southeast Europe (SEE) is a very important maize-growing region, comparable to the Corn belt region of the United
States, with similar dent germplasm (dent by dent hybrids). Historically, this region has undergone several genetic
material swaps, following the trends in the US, with one of the most signifcant swaps related to US aid programs
after WWII. The imported accessions used to make double-cross hybrids were also mixed with previously adapted
germplasm originating from several more distant OPVs, supporting the transition to single cross-breeding. Many of
these materials were deposited at the Maize Gene Bank of the Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje (MRIZP) between
the 1960s and 1980s. A part of this Gene Bank (572 inbreds) was genotyped with Afymetrix Axiom Maize Genotyping Array with 616,201 polymorphic variants. Data were merged with two other genotyping datasets with mostly
European fint (TUM dataset) and dent (DROPS dataset) germplasm. The fnal pan-European dataset consisted of 974
inbreds and 460,243 markers. Admixture analysis showed seven ancestral populations representing European fint,
B73/B14, Lancaster, B37, Wf9/Oh07, A374, and Iodent pools. Subpanel of inbreds with SEE origin showed a lack of
Iodent germplasm, marking its historical context. Several signatures of selection were identifed at chromosomes 1, 3,
6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. The regions under selection were mined for protein-coding genes and were used for gene ontology (GO) analysis, showing a highly signifcant overrepresentation of genes involved in response to stress. Our results
suggest the accumulation of favorable allelic diversity, especially in the context of changing climate in the genetic
resources of SEE.

AB - The aim of this study was to assess the chemical composition and bioactive properties of the wholegrain flour obtained from eleven maize inbred lines to identify genotypes with increased potential for the development of hybrids with high nutritional and functional value, suitable for food production. The maize inbreds, including seven standard yellow, two QPM (quality protein maize) and two lines for red kernel hybrids, were grown in the experimental field of the Maize Research Institute at the location of Zemun Polje, Serbia. Wholegrain maize flour was got by grinding the maize grain in a laboratory mill. The assessment of the chemical composition and content of certain bioactive compounds, as well as the total antioxidant capacity, was conducted using standard laboratory procedures. The highest starch content (73.73%) was determined in line L8, while line L10 had the highest protein content (12.82%). Among soluble proteins, the α-zein fraction was dominant in most of the lines, ranging from 0.92% to 3.57%. The highest content of total fibres (NDF) was determined in red kernel line L9 (15.77%). Line L8 was the richest in total carotenoids (21.08 μg βCE/g d.m.), while line L7 had the highest total antioxidant capacity (34.30 mmol Trolox/kg d.m.), which can be explained by the presence of anthocyanins in the red grain. Line L1 had the highest content of total sugars (3.36%), and line L4 had the lowest (1.44%). Most of the samples of inbred lines investigated in this study showed good quality parameters regarding chemical composition and bioactive properties. The obtained results may provide some valuable guidelines needed in the following stages of maize breeding and open up various possibilities for the utilization of wholegrain maize flour in the food industry.
Svi uzorci novih inbred linija ispitivani u ovoj studiji pokazali su dobre parametre kvaliteta u pogledu hemijskog sastava i bioaktivnih svojstava.

AB - The contemporary age has imposed numerous issues and obstacles worldwide that range from poverty, overpopulation, hunger, and political crisis to global warming, and other environment-bound problems. Furthermore, the interest in food safety and food waste management is gaining momentum. A potential health hazard stems from the presence of acrylamide (AA), a mutagen and Group 2A carcinogen, in food. When food is heated to a temperature above 120 °C during commercial or home cooking, free asparagine (Asn) and reducing sugars undergo the Maillard reaction, which is where AA primarily develops. According to research, foods produced from cereal grains may account for 20–60% of all AA intake. Implementation of a "field-to-fork" strategy that interconnects the food researchers and policymakers with the whole supply chain from cereal growers and the food industry with the consumers, safer and healthier cereal-based food production can be achieved.

AB - In order to assess the silage potential of maize hybrids, the nutritional quality and the enzymatic in vitro digestibility of five local maize hybrids (ZP 707, ZP 7357, ZP 7072, ZP 7777, and ZP 6263) was tested in the laboratory of the Group for Food Technology and Biochemistry of the Maize Research Institute "Zemun Polje". The hybrids were grown at a total of four locations, one in Srem (Autonomous Province of Vojvodina) and three in Central Serbia. The hybrid 7001 was used as a standard. The selection of hybrids for this research was made on the basis of the actuality of individual hybrids and the market orientation of the Maize Research Institute. The following properties were investigated: dry matter content, lignocellulose fiber content, and in vitro dry matter digestibility of the whole plant. According to the achieved results, it can be concluded that hybrids ZP 707, ZP 7357, followed by ZP 7777 proved to be the maize genotypes highly preferable for the production of silage. All tested hybrids achieved better results than the standard in most locations. Hybrid ZP 707 on average had the highest in vitro dry matter digestibility (61.43 ± 1.86%), as well as the lowest content of all lignocellulosic fibers (NDF-52.76%, ADF-24.40%, ADL-2.58, hemicellulose-28.36, and cellulose-21.82%), which all indicates its potential as a silage maize form suitable for cultivation in different agro-ecological conditions. In terms of digestibility and dry matter content, the ZP 707 hybrid can be singled out as the most stable, i.e. it is appropriate for growing both in lowland areas and at higher altitudes. ZP 6263 proved to be the most inferior hybrid at most locations, while based on in vitro digestibility and dry matter content, ZP 7072 hybrid varied the most. The digestibility of the whole plant was negatively affected by the higher content of primarily lignin (ADL), followed by ADF and cellulose fraction share. Although it is optimal to harvest silage maize in the waxy maturity stage of grain ripeness, when the dry matter content of the whole plant is in the range between 30 and 35%, the harvest time in some hybrids in some locations was significantly exceeded, which affected the results of dry matter digestibility. The findings obtained in this study can be highly useful for future breeding programs directed toward creating new and improved silage maize hybrids.

AB - The presence of acrylamide, a mutagen and a Group 2A carcinogen, in food, is a health concern
that might raise cancer risk. Acrylamide is mainly formed in the Maillard reaction between free
asparagine and reducing sugars, during industrial thermal food processing or home cooking, at
a temperature over 120°C. The European Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/2158 established
mitigation measures and benchmarks for acrylamide levels in some food categories, which
were incorporated into the Serbian regulation. Research shows that cereal-based products may
bring about 20-60% of acrylamide intake. In Serbia, there are no guidelines for the cultivation
of cereals with a reduced potential for acrylamide formation. Knowing that the amount of free
asparagine is proportional to the formation of acrylamide in the majority of food products,
one of the key approaches is to select the ingredients with a lower level of asparagine. Studies
indicate that applying foliar fertilizers with increased sulfur content in some cereals influences
the decrease of free asparagine synthesis in grain, lowering the acrylamide potential in cerealbased foods. Furthermore, the choice of the appropriate raw material and production parameters
can significantly influence the formation of acrylamide in food products. This review aims to
provide insight into current strategies for the mitigation of acrylamide in cereal-based foods, as

AB - Maize Research Institute „Zemun Polje“ gene bank preserves ex-situ an active collection (5806 accessions). Local landraces are the most significant, since they were created by natural selection and adapted to local growth conditions. In the last 15 years, in MRIZP gene bank was conducted identification of superior genotypes for specific traits and drought tolerant and improved grain quality core collections were established. Moreover, exchange of inbred lines from MRIZP gene bank and Agricultural Institute Osijek working collections, genotyping and phenotyping of inbreds, and statistical analysis of molecular and agronomic data, is conducted through ongoing Project “Harmonization of methods for phenotyping, genotyping and management of genetic resources in maize”. Although the accessions conserved in gene banks are valuable sources for breeding varietes more nutritious, productive and resilient to pests, diseases and climatic changes, there is a limited information of their agronomic characteristics. To overcome this, the European Evaluation Network (EVA) was established in 2019 by the European Cooperative Programme for Plant Genetic Resources (ECPGR). All activities within the EVA networks are intended at the pre-breeding stage, to increase the knowledge about publicly available crop germplasm, with aim to introducing these into breeding programmes. Through crop-specific public–private partnerships, maize EVA is generating standardized evaluation data (both the phenotypic and the genotypic) for numerous accessions and landraces available in European gene banks. During the project, a total of 95 MRIZP accessions will be genotyped and evaluated in multilocation experiments for futher use by breeding companies.

AB - This study's primary objective was to assess the quality parameters of fifteen different genotypes of Serbian maize hybrids in
order to establish whether they were suitable for making high-quality silage for ruminant feed. The study was carried out as a
two-year field experiment at the Maize Research Institute in Zemun Polje, Serbia. Laboratory analyses included the yield
structure of the examined maize hybrids, the evaluation of the composition of lignocellulosic fiber and the percentage of their
ratios, as well as the in vitro dry matter digestibility and NDF digestibility of the whole plant samples. The Fisher's LSD test was
used to statistically analyse the data, which were then reported as the mean and standard deviation of at least three independent
replicates. The graphical representation of correlations among the observed parameters used the principal component analysis
(PCA) method. All maize hybrids have displayed high-quality characteristics, which are required for the production of highquality silage.

AB - The main goal of this study was to observe the properties of fifteen
different genotypes of maize hybrids from Serbia in order to determine their
suitability for the production of high-quality silage for ruminant feed. The research
was conducted in a two-year field experiment at the location of the Maize Research
Institute in Zemun Polje, Serbia, and the laboratory analyses included yield structure
of the investigated maize hybrids, assessment of the lignocellulosic fiber
composition, as well as the in vitro dry matter digestibility of the whole plant
samples. All maize hybrids have shown good quality traits that are a prerequisite for
the production of high-quality silage.

AB - In the process of hybrid maize breeding, the greatest attention is directed towards increasing the level and stability of the yield, while grain quality is of secondary importance. The very
principles of hybrid breeding, as well as the economic aspects and competition between different breeding companies, have led to an enormous narrowing of the genetic basis of commercial
maize hybrids. Concurrently, there is usually a small number of often related hybrids of similar
technological and nutritional quality present on the market. Six best-selling ZP maize hybrids
in the previous ten years were chosen as the subject of this study. In the period from 2009-2018,
both the yield components and parameters of technological and nutritional quality of the grain
were studied. It was found that the examined parameters varied a lot in different years of production and that some parameters were more influenced by genotype (number of kernel rows per ear,
portion of pericarp, and crude fiber content) while others were more influenced by the environment (kernel weight per ear, total protein, starch, and oil content, respectively). The amount and
the distribution of precipitation during the vegetative period affected not only the yield components i.e. grain yield but also the technological qualitz parametres and nutritional properties of
the grain. Based on the observed parental components, it is evident that they are related hybrids
that, despite the high genotype by environment interactions, consequently have similar parameters of technological quality and nutritional composition. The imperative is to develop special
breeding programs aiming to create both the starting material and parental components to provide hybrids of improved technological quality and nutritional properties on the market. In that
way, the needs of the processing industry for raw materials of certain characteristics can be met.
doveli su do enormnog suženja genetičke osnove komercijalnih hibrida kukuruza. Na tržištu je
istovremeno najčešće prisutan mali broj, često srodnih hibrida sličnog tehnološkog i nutritivnog
kvaliteta.
parametri tehnološkog i nutritivnog kvaliteta zrna. Utvrđeno je da su ispitivani parametri veoma
varirali u različitim godinama gajenja, kao i da su neki parametri bili pod većim uticajem genotipa (broj redova zrna, udeo perikarpa i sirove celuloze), a neki pod većim uticajem spoljašnje sredine (masa zrna po klipu, udeo ukupnih proteina, skroba i ulja, respektivno). Količina i raspored

AB - Popcorn is a type of specialty maize and plays important role in the history and the spread of
this species. This type of maize historicaly received little atention in genetic diversity studies
while the fact is that information on genetic variability and population structure is of crucial
importance for improvement of breeding programs. The genetic variation of popcorn maize
was mainly analysed using SSR markers, but there are not many studies applying high-density
SNP markers with lower genotyping errors. The aim of this study was the assesment of genetic
diversity and population structure of popcorn germplasm which represents the genetic
resources currently used in breeding programs in Maize Research Institute „Zemun Polje“.
Molecular characterization of 44 popcorn genotypes was done using 25k SNP Illumina Infinum
Array for maize. After quality control filtering, 12335 SNPs were selected for downstream
analyses. Genetic distance detected ranged from 0.001 to 0.51 with an average of 0.33. The
majority of genetic distances (70.6%) fell between 0.30 and 0.51 revealing significant genetic
variability in a set of maize genotypes under study. SNP markes were moderatly informative
with an average PIC value of 0.26. Also, for more than 50% of SNPs, PIC value was greater
than 0.30. The average observed heterozygosity was 0.04 ranging from 0 to 0.11. The
clustering, principal component and model-based STRUCTURE analyses showed similar
grouping of popcorn lines, generally in accordance with their genetic background. The results
of this research gave valuable information for initiation of future breeding strategies.

AB - Identification of high yielding and stable genotypes is one of the main goals in all breeding
programmes Estimation of hybrids is often aggravated due to the presence of genotype x envi-
ronment (GE) interaction One of the ways to eliminate negative effect of this interaction is the
application of reliable statistical models such as AMMI model, which singles out high yielding
and stable genotypes that have positive reaction to the improvement of production environments
This research aimed to establish specific maize hybrids interactions in different environments in
two years by AMMI analysis Twelve KWS maize hybrids belonging to FAO 400-500, were exam-
ined in two years over eight locations in Vojvodina The highest yield in both years had the hybrid
KWS2 (12 764 kg ha-1) Based on the AMMI1 model, hybrid KWS9 showed the highest stability
and adaptability at all locations According to AMMI2, hybrids KWS1, KWS3 and KWS12, had
the highest stability and adaptability, while hybrids KWS2, KWS6, KWS8, KWS9 and KWS10
showed a satisfactory level of stability and it is necessary to pay attention to which locations they
have positive interactions in order to be recommended in such regions Nevertheless, based on
the AMMI2, locations Temerin, Kikinda and Zrenjanin, showed similar interaction response,
which points out that the number of trial locations could be reduced Obtained results would
contribute to the more precise decision in hybrids recommendation for the certain region, but
also in defining further aims in maize breeding.

obe godine ispitivanja imao je hibrid KWS2 (12 764 kg ha-1) Na osnovu AMMI1 modela hibrid

dok hibridi KWS2, KWS6, KWS8, KWS9 i KWS10 pokazuju zadovoljavajući nivo stabilnosti i

izvođenje ogleda Rezultati dobijeni ovim istraživanjem će doprineti preciznijem i kvalitetnijem
pravaca u oplemenjivanju kukuruza.

AB - Seed deterioration is expressed as the loss of viability, vigour and quality during ageing The
major causes of seed deterioration refer to free radical-mediated lipid peroxidation, enzyme
inactivation or protein degradation, disruption of cellular membranes and damage to genetic
integrity Accelerated ageing (AA) is a simple method for studying the mechanisms of deterio-
ration over short periods In order to estimate the deterioration rate, seeds of four maize geno-
types were exposed to accelerated ageing for different time points (three and six days of AA) In
parallel, the same genotypes were evaluated regarding the content of total phenolics, phenolic
acids, flavonoids and anthocyanins, as well as regarding total antioxidant capacity Compared
to non-stressed seeds, ageing was evidenced by decreased germination energy (48 9%), a total
number of seedlings (40 8%) and seedlings growth (70 0% for root length, 44 0% and 10 5% for
root and shoot fresh weight, 5 0% for seed rest fresh weight, 12 0% and 11 5% for root and shoot
dry weight, 15 3% for seed rest dry weight, respectively), as well as by an increased number of
abnormal seedlings (22 0%) Correlation analysis revealed that higher content of total phenolics,
flavonoids and anthocyanins contributed to a higher radical scavenging activity, which was re-
flected through a lower level of deterioration rate, both regarding the energy of germination and
overall seedling performance.

AB - Plants reconfigure their metabolic pathways to cope with water deficit. The aim of this study was to determine the status of the physiological parameters and the content of phenolic acids in the upper most ear leaf of maize inbred lines contrasting in drought tolerance in terms of improved plant productivity e.g., increased grain yield. The experiment was conducted under irrigation and rain-fed conditions. In drought-tolerant lines, the effect of water deficit was reflected through a chlorophyll and nitrogen balance index increase followed by a flavonols index decrease. The opposite trend was noticed in drought susceptible inbreds, with the exception of the anthocyanins index. Moreover, in comparison to irrigation treatment, opposite trends in the correlations between grain yield and physiological parameters found under water deficit conditions indicated the activation of different metabolic pathways in defense against water deficit stress. Concerning phenolic acid content, water deficit caused the reduction of protocatechuic, caffeic, and sinapic acid in all inbreds evaluated. However, the highly pronounced increase of ferulic and especially cinnamic acid content under water deficit conditions indicated possible crucial role of these secondary metabolites in preventing the harmful effects of water deficit stress, which, in turn, might be useful in maize breeding selection for drought tolerance

AB - Due to the loss of agro-biodiversity, there is a strong effort to find apparent and efficient
mechanisms for the conservation and sustainable use of genetic diversity. A joint monitoring of the
diversity and collections structure of the Montenegrin maize landraces conserved in the Serbian
(MRIZPGB) and Montenegrin (MGB) gene banks has been conducted in order to improve the
composition of the collections and to identify and eliminate possible redundancy. Based on a separate
analysis of white- and yellow-orange maize landraces, it can be concluded that the diversity and
evolution of distinct maize landraces grown and collected in Montenegro have been simultaneously
shaped by both environmental (i.e., natural selection) and socially driven factors (farmers’ selection,
migration and colonization processes of the human population). Although it has been determined
that the authenticity and variability of the Montenegrin maize landraces gene pool have largely
been preserved in the MRIZPGB collection, a significant amount of redundancy was observed. The
obtained results will contribute to the cost-efficient conservation of the maize gene pool in the
Montenegrin and Serbian gene banks. The recognized and well-preserved original variability of the
MRIZPGB and MGB Montenegrin gene pool represents a valuable source for pre-breeding activities
on broadening the white and flint maize breeding programmes under temperate conditions.

AB - Soybean is one of the most economically important grain crops. As the
source of plant protein and vegetable oil, it is widely used as food and
industrial crop. Quality of soybean oil is determined by fatty acid (FA)
composition. Biochemical variation of different varieties significantly
facilitates genetic screening of kernel traits and grain quality attributes, thus
leading to one of the most important breeding strategies - improvement of
the grain composition. The main objective of this work was to evaluate
whole kernel biochemical composition of eight soybean varieties and eight
lines from different breeding programs. Phytochemical characterization was
conducted for total protein and oil content, as well as for fatty acids content
(e.g. palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid). According to
Kjedahl method, total protein content ranged from 37.01% to 39.91%. The
obtained results showed that the lowest and the highest values for oil content
were 19.00% and 21.34%, respectively. Gas Chromatography/Flame
Ionization Detector (GC-FID) was used for FA quantification and
determination. The most abundant FA was linoleic acid with a range from
47.45 to 55.7 g/100g, followed by oleic acid with detected rage from 22.59
to 29.07 g/100g of total FA content. Palmitic, linolenic and stearic FA
showed a significantly lower level varied from 9.57 to 11.51 g/100g, 5.42 to
7.18 g/100g and 3.73 to 5.86 g/100g, respectively. This variability observed
in kernel quality among soybean genotypes can provide valuable information
for future breeding.

AB - Significant amounts of crop diversity, especially in out-crossing species like maize (Zea mays L.) is, are often distributed both between and within related groups of accessions. Thus, a detailed characterization and classification of gene bank accessions should be performed prior to use of the best of them for introgression programs to enlarge the genetic base of the elite germplasm pool. Based on performances per se, 40 landraces were chosen out of the wide pool of Western Balkan landraces, previously clustered into 11 homogenous groups. The objective of this study was to evaluate the heterotic pattern of landraces in testcrossing with three divergent elite testers L217, L73B013 and L255/75-5. According to the results of a two-year trial conducted at four locations, landraces 1267, 1346, 197, 1569, 1509 and 2036 expressed the best general combining abilities (GCA) for grain yield. Landraces 1960, 642, 2006, 1945, 1346, 1569, 1450, 1534, 1509 and 1665 performed well in crosses to L217, while landraces 1960, 773, 1798, 1665, 632, 877 and 1569 gave the best results in crosses to inbred tester L73B013. In crosses to inbred tester L255/75-5, the highest heterotic effects were expressed by landraces 467, 773, 1346, 1534, 2249 and 288. Particular attention is to be paid to landraces 1346, 1569 and 1509, having simultaneously high GCA and specific combining abilities (SCA). A certain number of landraces expressed heterosis with two inbred testers, indicating existence of a new unrelated heterotic pattern within the local germplasm pool evaluated.

abstract = "Significant amounts of crop diversity, especially in out-crossing species like maize (Zea mays L.) is, are often distributed both between and within related groups of accessions. AB - The contemporary trends in maize breeding are directed at identification of genotypes with improved grain quality for human consumption, industrial processing, and their incorporation into breeding programmes. In this study, three maize hybrids and three open-pollinated varieties (OPVs), differing in grain colour and type, were used to examine the differences in the total carotenoid content, the phenolic compounds profile and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). In addition, physical parameters, basic chemical composition, as well as the content of protein fractions in grain, were analysed. The multivariate approach through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) application contributed to better understanding of the complexity of the interdependence for maize grain quality parameters tested. From the aspect of different end use, better technological quality desirable for dry milling and snack food processing found in OPVs Osmak and Bosanac, as well as high content of bioactive compounds (i.e. TAC) exhibited by OPV Rumenka, make these genotypes superior compared to hybrids’ varieties evaluated.

AB - The narrow genetic base of commercial maize varieties emphasise the necessity for conservation, characterisation and utilisation of germplasm stored within gene banks. Broad genetic variability preserved in the Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje (MRIZP) gene bank, which includes accessions which originated from the Western Balkan, as a part of European corn-belt, is an exceptional source of desirable traits for enriching breeders' working collections for maize breeding under temperate conditions. Preliminary screening for abiotic stress tolerance, which marked 321 maize landraces, served as the first step in stratification process of selecting a smaller number of accessions from the entire gene bank local collection. After classification of these landraces into eleven homogenous groups, the objective of this study was to continue the stratification process of selection (as a second step), based on evaluation of agro-morphological traits of interest for breeding. The conducted evaluation highlighted 40 landraces with the best per se performances, important for breeding. Out of them, 28 early-maturing flint landraces with stiff stalks, low positioned ears, high yield potential and good general ear assessment could be considered as valuable source for their introgression into elite flint germplasm pool.

AB - Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) is one of the most economically important legumes.
As the source of plant protein and vegetable oil it is used as food and industrial crop in
many regions of the world. The genetic base of soybean cultivars is highly narrow,
corresponding to the fact that it is largely a self-pollinated species. Twelve soybean
varieties were evaluated with SSR (Simple Sequence Repeat) markers selected based on
their distribution on the 20 genetic linkage groups. Out of 36 SSR markers, 33 markers
were found polymorphic among analyzed genotypes. Total number of alleles was 88,
ranging between two and four with an average of 2.67 alleles per marker. The
polymorphic information content (PIC) ranged from 0.153 (Satt229, Satt239 and
Satt327) to 0.775 (Satt276). Simple matching similarity coefficient was calculated using
NTSYSpc2 program package. The average genetic similarity coefficient for all pairwise
was 0.57, with highest value (0.84) between Galina and Lela, while the lowest value
(0.46) was found between Bosa and Nena. Dendrogram by the UPGMA (Unweighted
Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean) method was constructed on the basis of
genetic similarity matrix. Genotypes were distributed in two groups and one branch,
mostly in accordance with their pedigree.

AB - Morphological traits are the earliest used markers in germplasm characterization, but their application may be difficult due to the presence of recessive homozygous alleles and their low frequency. Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) markers are widely used for estimation of genetic diversity within different species, due to their reproducibility, informativeness co-dominant and multi-allelic nature. They are also most effective for evaluation and selection of plant material, as well as assessment of genetic variability and relatedness of maize inbred lines. The aim of our work was to evaluate genetic diversity of maize inbred lines by SSR markers and compare results with their pedigre information. Seventeen polymorphic SSR markers were used to characterized 23 maize inbred lines that belong to diferent breeding programs. A total number of detected alleles was 78 and varied between two to nine, with an average of 4.6 alleles per marker. Based on presence or absence of alleles in each sample coefficient of similarity was calculated by Jaccard in NTSYSpc2 program package, version 2.1. The highest value (0.88) of genetic similarity was calculated between L21 and L22, while the lowest value (0.18) was found between inbred lines L3/L16 and L15/L20. Genetic similarity matrix was used to construct dendrogram by UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean) method. Dendrogram analysis grouped maize inbred lines in one large cluster with 21 analyzed genotypes and one smaller cluster with two lines. Genetic heterogeneity betweean inbred lines detected by selected set of SSR markers, makes them a good choice for genetic diversity analysis and planning maize breeding programs.

abstract = "Morphological traits are the earliest used markers in germplasm characterization, but their application may be difficult due to the presence of recessive homozygous alleles and their low frequency.
