High-yielding and chemically enriched maize hybrids bred in Serbia - the best basis for super quality feed and food

AB  - Introduction/purpose: This paper presents the results of several different research studies. The inbred lines ZPPL 146 and ZPPL 159 and the maize hybrids ZP 633, ZP 735, and ZP 737 are primarily intended for human and livestock nutrition. Their selection took about four decades. Methods: Spectral bands were registered using the method of resonant Raman spectroscopy of the leaves of inbred maize lines. These spectral bands indicate the conformational characteristics of not only carotenoid molecules but also other compounds (phosphate, gluten, and amide III) in the leaf. Results: A systematic examination of the inbred lines ZPPL 146 and ZPPL 159 and their maize hybrids ZP 633, ZP 735, and ZP 737 was performed in this paper. It was stated that the new inbred lines of corn, i.e. ZPPL 146 and ZPPL 159, are rich in carotenoids and yellow pigments. These lines also have significant quantities of other valuable bioactive compounds and good physical characteristics. The lines have an upright position of the top leaves and belong to the group of maize lines with significant characteristics of the photosynthetic model. They are resistant to high temperatures and are drought tolerant. Conclusion: This paper presents the relevant properties, characteristics and parameters of the new studied inbred maize lines that can be used in selection processes in the future. High-yielding and high-quality maize hybrids, i.e. ZP 633, ZP 735, and ZP 737, have been created from the mentioned inbred maize lines. They are recognizable by their qualities. The hybrid ZP633 is especially noteworthy for human consumption (children and the elderly). Further, from the agronomic-veterinary point of view, it is confirmed that the hybrids ZP 735 and ZP 737 are the most suitable for livestock feeding with the programmed use of corn silage. The relevant agronomic, morphological and nutritional properties of the maize hybrids ZP 633, ZP 735, and ZP 737 are also presented in this paper. The results regarding the grain structure and yield height for grain and silage for the hybrids ZP 677 and ZP 684, produced in Serbia and the countries of Southeastern Europe, are also given.

Differences in nutritive and bioactive compounds content between hybrid and open-pollinated maize varieties

AB  - The  contemporary  trends  in  maize  breeding  are  directed  at  identification  of  genotypes  with improved grain quality for human consumption, industrial processing, and their incorporation into breeding  programmes.  In  this  study,  three  maize  hybrids  and  three  open-pollinated  varieties  (OPVs),  differing in grain colour and type, were used to examine the differences in the total carotenoid content, the phenolic compounds profile and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). In addition, physical parameters, basic  chemical  composition,  as  well  as  the  content  of  protein  fractions  in  grain,  were  analysed.  The  multivariate  approach  through  Principal  Component  Analysis  (PCA)  application  contributed  to  better  understanding  of  the  complexity  of  the  interdependence  for  maize  grain  quality  parameters  tested.  From  the  aspect  of  different  end  use,  better  technological  quality  desirable  for  dry  milling  and  snack  food processing found in OPVs Osmak and Bosanac, as well as high content of bioactive compounds (i.e. TAC) exhibited by OPV Rumenka, make these genotypes superior compared to hybrids’ varieties evaluated.
AB  - Savremeni trendovi u oplemenjivanju kukuruza idu u pravcu identifikacije genotipova povećanog kvaliteta zrna za ljudsku upotrebu, industrijsku preradu i njihovog uključivanja u komercijalne oplemenjivačke programe. Za ovo istraživanje odabrane su tri hibridne i tri slobodnooprašujuće sorte kukuruza različite po boji i tipu zrna, u cilju ispitivanja razlika u sadržaju ukupnih karotenoida, fenolnih jedinjenja i ukupnom antioksidativnom kapacitetu. Dodatno su analizirane fizičke karakteristike i osnovni hemijski sastav zrna, kao i sadržaj proteinskih frakcija. Multivarijacioni pristup, kroz primenu analize glavnih komponenata (PCA) doprineo je boljem razumevanju složenih veza ispitivanih parametara kvaliteta. Sa aspekta različite upotrebne vrednosti, bolji tehnološki kvalitet poželjan za proces suvog mlevenja i proces proizvodnje grickalica (snek proizvoda) je identifikovan kod slobodnooprašujućih sorti Osmak i Bosanac, dok se sorta Rumenka odlikovala visokim sadržajem bioaktivnih jedinjenja (tj. visokim antioksidativnim kapacitetom). Dobijeni rezultati ukazuju na superiornost slobodnooprašujućih sorti u poređenju sa hibridnim.

Evaluation of temperate quality protein maize (Qpm) hybrids for field performance and grain quality

AB  - Quality protein maize (QPM) (Zea mays L.) is primarily used for food in countries of tropical and sub-tropical regions
where maize is the main source of protein. Although its cultivation in temperate regions is hampered by residues of
exotic germplasm, it could be beneficial for use in livestock feeds as it was shown that substitution of standard maize
with QPM can improve livestock characteristics and decrease dietary lysine supplementation. The aim of this study
was to test 11 QPM hybrids obtained by crossing adapted QPM inbred lines for their performance in field trials in 2
yr at four locations, as well as to determine their relevant biochemical components. The main reason for rejecting nine
QPM hybrids was low grain yield, standard hybrids had higher yields on average for 37.8%. Hybrid ZPQPM6 had good
agronomic characteristics, but its biochemical components were nonsignificantly different from the standard hybrid.
Only hybrid ZPQPM13 met necessary criteria, grain yield comparable with standard hybrids, high tryptophan content
in different environments (average 0.083%) and hard endosperm (average score 1.87). Lysine content, measured after
mercantile production, was 0.44%. Quality index, although below the QPM threshold (which is 0.80%) was significantly
higher (p < 0.05) in ZPQPM13 in comparison with standard hybrid, indicating improved nutritional quality of the protein.
The results indicated that presence of exotic germplasm in these QPM hybrids is a consequential difficulty and that in their
parental inbred lines at least one more backcross with temperate germplasm should be done to select better adapted QPM.

AB  - Phenotypic measurements under controlled cultivation conditions are essential to gain
a mechanistic understanding of plant responses to environmental impacts and thus
for knowledge-based improvement of their performance under natural field conditions.
Twenty maize inbred lines (ILs) were phenotyped in response to two levels of water and
nitrogen supply (control and stress) and combined nitrogen and water deficit. Over a
course of 5 weeks (from about 4-leaf stage to the beginning of the reproductive stage),
maize phenology and growth were monitored by using a high-throughput phenotyping
platform for daily acquisition of images in different spectral ranges. The focus of the
present study is on the measurements taken at the time of maximum water stress (for
traits that reflect plant physiological properties) and at the end of the experiment (for
traits that reflect plant architectural and biomass-related traits). Twenty-five phenotypic
traits extracted from the digital image data that support biological interpretation of
plant growth were selected for their predictive value for mid-season shoot biomass
accumulation. Measured fresh and dry weights after harvest were used to calculate
various indices (water-use efficiency, physiological nitrogen-use efficiency, specific plant
weight) and to establish correlations with image-derived phenotypic features. Also, score
indices based on dry weight were used to identify contrasting ILs in terms of productivity
and tolerance to stress, and their means for image-derived and manually measured traits
were compared. Color-related traits appear to be indicative of plant performance and
photosystem II operating efficiency might be an importance physiological parameter
of biomass accumulation, particularly under severe stress conditions. Also, genotypes
showing greater leaf area may be better adapted to abiotic stress conditions.

AB  - In this article we used the method of IR spectroscopy to identify bioactive organic compounds and
their structural characteristics in the leaves of maize inbred lines ZPPL 186, ZPPL 225 and M1-3-3 Sdms
based on a standard study of high intensity high-amplitude spectral bands and based on attempt-study of
hypothetically influential low intensity low-amplitude spectral bands. The made assumption was that numerous
spectral bands, not analyzed yet, but occurring in different kinetic forms should be systematically analyzed
and the dynamics of their formation caused by different oscillations and vibrations of molecular bonds
of organic compounds and their functional groups should be proven. Low intensity spectral bands imply
unstable state of the biological system (leaf), which is a consequence of the excited state of molecules, radicals,
atoms or ions in tissues, cells or biomembranes. Similar transport processes occur when biological systems
are rhythmically stimulated, as well as in the case of a complex ion transport across the excited thylakoid
membrane. These bands most frequently occurred in the wave number range of 500–1600 cm–1; they
appeared in several spots in wave number ranges up to 3000 cm–1. Amines, primary and secondary amides,
proteins, amino acids, alkanes, alkenes, aldehydes, ketones, aromatic compounds, carbohydrates, carboxylic
acids, ethers, alcohols, sulfides, mono- and polysaccharides were identified in leaves of inbred lines. The
analysis of spectral bands showed that the most intensive was the inbred line ZPPL 186, then the ZPPL M1-3-3
Sdms, while the lowest intensity was detected in ZPPL 225. Thus, by overall study it is possible to identify not
only organic compounds and their structures in leaves of inbred lines, but also to indicate the possibility of
causing an unstable and conformational state in them.

AB  - The nature, role, and significance of low intensity spectral bands con-tained within the infrared spectra of kernels of high-yielding maize hybrids: ZP 341, ZP 434, and ZP 505 were observed in this study. The observations were performed to identify or-ganic molecules and their structural properties. The occurrence of unstable state of organic compounds and their functional groups are conditioned by such a process. The set hypoth-esis holds that there is a necessity to study the existence of many and low intensity spectral bands, not observed so far, occurring in different patterns (low intensity bands, single or grouped). They should be observed and the dynamics of their formation, caused by their different movements, including the possibility of their cancellation or amplification, should be explained. Such spectral bands most often appear in the wave number range of 400–950 cm-1. They occur in several wave numbers up to 3,000 cm-1 and are caused by different types of vibration movements (valence and deformation vibrations) of organic compounds and their functional groups: primary, secondary, and tertiary amides, proteins, free amino acids, alkanes, alkenes, aldehydes, ketones, aromatic compounds, cellulose, carbohydrates, car-boxylic acids, ethers, and alcohols. An unbiased analysis of low intensity spectral bands of maize hybrid kernels reveals that their occurrence is similar. Small differences, for some cases of the occurrence of low intensity spectral bands, can barely be ascertained. In this way, it is possible to establish not only the chemical composition of organic compounds of kernels of observed maize hybrids, but also it is possible to indicate their unstable, confor-mational, and functional properties.
AB  - У овом раду чини се покушај изучавања природе, улоге и значаја слабо развијених спектралних трака, садржаних у инфрацрвеним спектрима зрна високоприносних хибрида кукуруза: ZP 341, ZP 434 и ZP 505. Ова проучавања вршена су ради идентификације органских молекула и утврђивања њихових структурних карактеристика. Оваквим процесом условљава се појава нестабилног стања органских једињења и њихових функционалних група. Износи се хипотеза да се постојање бројних и слабо развијених спектралних трака, које до сада нису изучаване, а које се појављују у различитој форми (слабог интензитета), појављују појединачно или груписано. Њих је неопходно посебно изучавати и објашња-вати динамику њиховог настајања условљавану различитим карактером њиховог кретања, што укључује и могућност њиховог потирања или увећавања. Овакве спек   тралне траке најчешће се појављују у опсегу таласног броја од 400 до 950 cm-1. Оне се успостављају, ту и тамо, на више места таласног броја све до 3.000 cm-1, а настају различитим карактером вибрационог кретања (валенционо осциловање и деформационо вибрирање) органских једињења и функционалних група и то: примарни, секундарни и терцијарни амиди, протеин, слободне аминокисeлине, алкани, алкени, алдехиди, кетони, ароматична једињења, целулоза, угљоводони ци, карбоксилне киселине, етри и алкохоли. Непристрасном анализом слабо разви  је  них спектралних трака зрна три проучавана хибрида кукуруза стиче се сазнање да је њихово појављивање слично. Мање разлике, за неке случајеве појављивања слабих спектралних трака, једва да се могу констатовати. На овај начин, могуће је утврди-ти не само структуру органских једињења у зрну проучаваних хибрида кукуруза, него и указати на њихова нестабилна, конформациона и функционална стања.

AB  - Genetic distance among six elite maize inbred lines was analyzed using SSR markers. Hybrid progeny obtained by crossing inbred lines according an incomplete diallel design was tested in field trials together with inbred lines per se.The objective of this study was to determine genetic distance of inbred maize lines and to examine if a significant correlation exist between the genetic distance of parental lines and the exhibited high parent heterosis (HPH) and specific combining abilities (SCA) for grain yield, ear lenght, kernel row numberand number of kernels per row. Twenty one SSR primers were used for genetic assesment of inbreds with detected 92 alleles. Genetically most distant lines were ZPL1 and ZPL5 and ZPL6 with the GD value of 0.549, while the closest one were ZPL2 and ZPL3 with GD value of 0.11. The dendrogram distinguished two main groups of inbreds: ZPL5 and ZPL6 grouped in a smaller cluster and ZPL1, ZPL2, ZPL3 and ZPL4 forming the second cluster. Values of the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient between genetic distance among inbred lines based on SSR markers and SCA for all analyzed traits were positive and significant with the exception of rows per ear. Highest correlation was exhibited between the genetic distance and SCA for number of kernels per row (0.643). Spearman's rank correlation coefficient between GD and high parent heterosis was positive and significant for ear length and kernel number in row with coefficient values of 0.554 and 0.611, respectively.

Five high oil populations (HOPs) from the Maize Research Institute (MRI) gene bank were chosen for this research, according to their high grain oil content, synchrony between silking of ZP341 and anthesis of the populations and good agronomic performances in 2012. Selfing of ZP341 and HOPs, as well as crosses of ZP341 cmsS sterile x HOPs were carried out in 2013. Oil content, fatty acid composition, protein and tryptophan content, and physical characteristics of the obtained kernels were measured. Four HOPs showed significant positive influence on the oil content in the TopCrosses (TC), 16.85 g kg(-1) on average. Oleic acid, which is the principal monounsaturated fatty acid, was significantly lower in all HOPs and all TCs, while selfed ZP341 had almost twice the average value typical for standard maize. However, this decrease in TCs was in a narrow range from 1 % (in TC-3) to 5 % (in TC-4) and the oleic content of TCs was on average higher by 60 % compared to the typical standard maize. Different favorable and unfavorable significant changes were detected in fatty acid compositions, protein and tryptophan contents and physical kernel properties for each potential TC combination. Results indicate differences in gene effects present in different TC combinations and underscore the need to examine each potential TC blend by conducting similar simple experiments.

However, this decrease in TCs was in a narrow range from 1 % (in TC-3) to 5 % (in TC-4) and the oleic content of TCs was on average higher by 60 % compared to the typical standard maize. Different favorable and unfavorable significant changes were detected in fatty acid compositions, protein and tryptophan contents and physical kernel properties for each potential TC combination. Results indicate differences in gene effects present in different TC combinations and underscore the need to examine each potential TC blend by conducting similar simple experiments.",

AB  - Six maize inbred lines for which we assumed that have a similar genetic background were selected for the study. Inbred lines were crossed according to incomplete diallel design and fifteen hybrid combinations were obtained. Hybrid combinations and their parental lines were used in our study. The objective of the study was to examine genetic polymorphism of parental lines, as well as to determine relationships between SSR genetic distance and values of high parent heterosis and specific combining abilities for grain yield. By using 19 SSR primers we classified inbred lines in two groups. First cluster consists of inbred lines L1, L2, L3, L4 and L5, while inbred line L6 formed second cluster, indicating different heterotic background in comparison to the other five inbred lines. The Spearman's correlation coefficients between SSR based genetic distance and specific combining abilities for grain yield had a value of (r=0,53*), while positive correlation were also found between genetic distance and high parent heterosis (r=0,57*).

AB  - Modern biophysical methods have provided a breakthrough in investigations of the status and functions of the intact plants at the molecular level. The infrared (IR) spectroscopy allows us to analyze the molecular composition and structure by recording the absorption of infrared radiation as a function of frequency of valent and deformation vibrations (wavenumber, cm-1) for chemical bonds. We used the IR Fourier spectroscopy method (IR spectra with Fourier Transformation,) to investigated the grain composition in maize hybrids - ZP 341, ZP 434 and ZP 505 created at Maize Research Institute (Zemun Polje, Belgrade, Serbia). The resulted spectra differed in peak number and intensity, and in oscillation frequency. Particularly, there are 20 to 23 peaks and characteristic spectral bands within the wavenumber range of 400 to 4000 cm-1. Characteristic spectral bands were analyzed for each hybrid with regard to absorption intensity in %, experimentally determined wavenumber in cm-1, and published wavenumber range. A comparison of these peaks to reference IR spectra from databases revealed biogenic organic molecules: alcohols, amines, esters, alkanes, carboxylic acids, alkenes, aldehydes, ketones and esters in the studied grain hybrids. In a typical IR spectrum of maize hybrid ZP 341 there were three most distinct bands with wavenumbers of 3400, 2900 and 1000 cm-1. Four peaks (3400, 2950, 1700 and 1000 cm-1) were characteristic of the ZP 434 hybrid, and eight major peaks of 3400, 2900, 2850, 1750, 1700, 1450, 1150 and 1000 cm-1 were observed in ZP 505. That is, the grain charterisics in ZP 505 slightly differ from those in ZP 341 and ZP 434, whereas in ZP 341 and ZP 434 the grain structure is more similar. In general, Serbian hybrids are characterized by high quality, productivity and technological suitability. The developed methodology for IR spectra recording and analysis in grain allows to reveal the composition and structure of biogenic compounds. It is important not only for diagnosis and breeding, but also for the development of biotechnological screening methods, or the estimation of grain storage time.

Effects of alkaline cooking and sprouting on bioactive compounds, their bioavailability and relation to antioxidant capacity of maize flour

AB  - The contents of total and available niacin, carotenoids, tocopherols, as well as soluble free, conjugated and insoluble bound phenolic compounds was determined in untreated, alkaline-cooked and sprouted kernels of white, sweet and yellow maize. Antioxidant capacity of untreated maize kernels and processed flours was evaluated, too. There was a considerable increase in soluble free and conjugated phenolic compounds contents of maize flour after alkaline cooking and sprouting. The content of total soluble free and conjugated phenolics in maize masa flour and sprouted flour was increased by 35% to 56% and by 46% to 92% as compared to the contents originally present in untreated kernels, respectively. Contrary, conditions of alkaline cooking had strong effect on the loss of bound phenolic compounds, as well as niacin, carotenoids and tocopherols in maize flour. Despite of this, our findings imply that both alkaline cooking and sprouting enhance the antioxidant capacity of maize kernels. According to our results, sprouting is a more effective method to release bound phenolics as well as to enhance the nutritional and functional value of the maize flour. Therefore, sprouted maize, as a rich source of bioavailable phytochemicals, can be used to develop functional maize-based foods.

Positive direct effects on grain yield were also observed for height to tassel base and plant height, while negative direct effects were observed for ear height and total number of leaves. As far as indirect effects were considered, a positive effect of the ear position height on yield over the total plant height stands out. The evaluation of the proportion of mutual effects of five observed morphological traits on grain yield, expressed by the coefficient of multiple determination (R-y12345(2)) amounted to 0.7881.

AB  - A complete diallel without reciprocals was investigated among six drought tolerant maize (Zea mays L.) landraces from MRI Zemun Polje gene bank. Trials with parental populations, their crosses and three check hybrids were conducted at three locations in 2012 and five locations in 2013 in Serbia. The aim was to determine potential heterotic patterns for reciprocal recurrent selection (RRS) among them. The average grain yield reached 4.832 and 5.864 t ha(-1) for the populations and population crosses, respectively. Mipdarent heterosis (MPH) for grain yield ranged from 10.0 to 36.7 %, with the average value of 21.3 %. Entry x environment interactions did not show significance for any trait, reflecting a broader adaptation of the material to different environments. The new heterotic pattern proposed for RRS was Iranian dent POP. N-425 x Argentinean flint ARZM 06-020, which had the highest grain yield (6.871 t ha(-1)) and MPH value (36.7 %). This cross confirms the hypotesis that broader geographical origin, as well as dent x flint type of cross, is in positive correlation with high MPH for grain yield in maize. The cluster analysis based on MPH was not in accordance with the single sequence repeat (SSR) analysis of parental populations. Since both of the populations have some undesirable agronomic traits (high moisture, root and stalk lodging, bareness), two to three cycles of intrapopulation selection for improving them before starting the RRS program should be performed. In some additional grain quality research, these populations showed favorable value-added traits (high tryptophan, oil, and saturated fatty acids), indicating the possibility of improving grain quality besides grain yield in this newly discovered heterotic pattern.

The new heterotic pattern proposed for RRS was Iranian dent POP. N-425 x Argentinean flint ARZM 06-020, which had the highest grain yield (6.871 t ha(-1)) and MPH value (36.7 %). This cross confirms the hypotesis that broader geographical origin, as well as dent x flint type of cross, is in positive correlation with high MPH for grain yield in maize. The cluster analysis based on MPH was not in accordance with the single sequence repeat (SSR) analysis of parental populations. Since both of the populations have some undesirable agronomic traits (high moisture, root and stalk lodging, bareness), two to three cycles of intrapopulation selection for improving them before starting the RRS program should be performed. In some additional grain quality research, these populations showed favorable value-added traits (high tryptophan, oil, and saturated fatty acids), indicating the possibility of improving grain quality besides grain yield in this newly discovered heterotic pattern.",

AB  - This paper presents results of several different studies that confirm the hypothesis that maize inbred lines rich in proteins and with exceptional nutritive values can be bred. This is also supported by a medicinal standpoint of programmed need for maize-based food and feed. With such an experimental approach, the maize inbred lines ZPPL 146 and ZPPL 159 and hybrids derived from them (ZP 633, ZP 735 and ZP 737) rich in proteins have been systematically tested. Based on concrete results the following we can be conclude as follows. Selected maize inbred lines ZPPL 146 and ZPPL 159, rich in carotenoids, yellow pigments, also have significant amounts of other relevant bioactive compounds. Observed inbred lines have erect top leaves and are classified into a group of maize inbreds with significant properties of the photosynthesis model, are resistant to high temperatures and tolerant to drought. Spectral bands pointing to conformational characteristics of molecules of carotenoids but also of other compounds (phosphates, glutens and amides III) were established by the resonance Raman spectroscopy method applied to the leaf of the maize inbred line ZPLL 146. Physiological, biochemical and biophysical traits of elite maize inbred lines and their hybrids were observed in this study with a special emphasis on their efficiency of photosynthesis, productivity and suitability for broad use of nutrient values of grain and other essential biogenic matters, first of all pigments that express antioxidative properties. Relevant traits, properties and parameters of observed maize inbred lines that can be used in the process of selection are presented. These prestigious maize inbred lines were used to develop high-yielding and high-quality maize hybrids (ZP 633, ZP 735 and ZP 737) that are recognisable for their quality in human nutrition (children and the elderly), that are confirmed by medical observations related to their use in food and feed. Relevant agronomic and morphological traits of maize hybrids are presented. Moreover, results on grain structure and yields obtained in the regions of south-eastern Europe are also displayed.

Maize core collection for increased grain quality

AB  - Formation of the maize (Zea mays L) core collection for increased macronutrient content is presented. Among 3,443 populations from Maize Research Institute (MRI), Zemun Polje (ZP), a total of 352 accessions (around 10.2%) were chosen for the core collection. The criteria were increased protein, oil and/or starch content in the kernel of the accessions, as well as good combining ability (CA) that was tested with two Lancaster and one each BSSS and Iodent testers. Average values for protein, oil and starch content for the whole collection were 11.5%, 4.2% and 68.9%, respectively. On the other hand, averages for the core collection were 13.6% for proteins, 7.7% for oil and 74.1% for starch, and they were significantly higher than for the whole collection (p lt 0.001). Small negative, but highly significant correlations were found for protein content and latitude (-0.119; p lt 0.01), as well as for starch content and altitude (-0.090; p lt 0.01) of the collection sites for Western Balkan landraces. Positive small significant correlations were obtained for oil and altitude (0.069; p lt 0.05) and starch and latitude of (0.077; p lt 0.05) collection site, while medium highly significant positive correlation was found for protein content and altitude of collection site (0.237; p lt 0.01). Eighteen populations with increased protein and/or oil content and with good universal combining ability (with Lancaster, BSSS, and Iodent testers) were chosen to form the mini-core collection for grain quality, and they are planned for further detailed biochemical, phenotypic and genetic characterisation.

Determination relevant breeding criteria by the path and factor analysis in maize

AB  - In the process of plant breeding the application of relevant breeding criteria is very important. The Path analysis is broadly applied with the aim to define yield components that mostly determine the yield and that can be used as quality breeding criteria. However, the significance of revealed relationships between yield and yield components can be affected by various factors, such as diverse genetic material that is observed, traits included into analysis, environments in which the material is observed, as well as, the applied statistic approach to determine the nature of the relationships itself. The interrelationships of yield and yield components of 15 commercial maize hybrids were observed using the Path and factor analyses. According to results of Path analysis, plant height, ear diameter and grain moisture had highly significant genetic and phenotypic direct effects on grain yield. At the same time, factor analysis points out significant effects of two factors on grain yield. Factor 1 was mostly determined by ear length and number of kernels per row, while grain moisture content, ear and cob diameter mostly determined Factor 2.

AB  - This paper discusses the application of the infrared (IR) spectroscopy method to grain of prestigious maize inbred lines to determine its conformational and functional properties. The IR spectra of prestigious maize inbred lines grain has been registered in: ZPPL 186, ZPPL 225 and M1-3-3 Sdms. The existence of spectral bands varying in both, number and intensity and their shape, frequency and kinetics has been determined. Infrared spectral bands are determined by transmittance (%) and frequency (cm-1) of chemical bonds' valence oscillations and deformation oscillations in functional groups: alkanes, alkenes, alcines, alcohols, ethers, carboxylic acids, esters, aldehydes and ketones that are characteristic for biogenic compounds of carbohydrates, vitamins, pigments and dietary fibres. By analyzing IR spectral bands, conformational and functional properties of bio-genic compounds can be detected in grain of observed prestigious maize inbred lines.
AB  - U ovom radu razmatra se primena metode infracrvene spektroskopije pri istraživanju zrna elitnih inbred linija kukuruza radi utvrđivanja konformacionih i funkcionalnih svojstava zrna. Registrovani su infracrveni spektri zrna inbred linija kukuruza: ZPPL 186, ZPPL 225 i M1- 3-3 Sdms. Utvrđeno je da kod infracrvenih spektara postoje različite spektralne trake koje se međusobno razlikuju kako po svojoj brojnosti u spektru i po svom intenzitetu, tako i po svojem obliku, svojoj frekvenciji i svojoj kinetici. Svaka spektralna traka definisana je intenzitetom apsorpcije infracrvenog zračenja, tj. transmi-tancom u (%) i frekvencijom oscilacija u (cm-1) valentnih i deformacionih oscilacija hemijskih veza koje postoje kod sledećih funkcionalnih grupa: alkana, alkena, alkina, alkohola, etra, karboksilne kiseline, estra, aldehida i ketona. Te funkcionalne grupe su karakteristične za biogena jedinjenja iz sastava ugljovodonika, vitamina, pigmenata i dijetetskih vlakana. Analizirajući trake infracrvenih spektara mogu se dijagnostikovati konformaciona i funkcionalna svojstva zrna ispitivanih inbred linija kukuruza.

In addition, the present paper aimed to study changes in the phenolic compounds, as well as in the overall antioxidant properties of different soybean products in relation to heating at 45-140 degrees C during the processes. RESULTSSoybean proteins were highly sensible to Maillard reaction and furosine was rapidly formed under slight heating conditions during extrusion and infrared heating. Microwave heating at lower temperatures for a longer time yielded lower acrylamide levels in the final soybean products, as a result of its partial degradation. However, during infrared heating, acrylamide formation greatly increased with decreasing moisture content. After a short time of extrusion and infrared heating at 140 degrees C and microwave heating at 135 degrees C for 5min, concentrations of HMF increased to 11.34, 26.21 and 34.97 mu gg(-1), respectively. CONCLUSIONThe heating conditions caused formation of acrylamide, HMF and furosine in high concentration. The results indicate that the complex structure of soybeans provides protection of phenolic compounds from thermal degradation, and that Maillard reaction products improved the antioxidant properties of heat-treated soybean. AB  - Geneticists have been trying to explain adaptability and stability of a genotype in terms of a desirable combination of alleles expressed via epistasis. Stability determined in one set of data is very often stability of a genotype to a prevalent stress factor in a moment of carrying out the experiment. However, grain stability of a certain genotype can be a result of different factors, such as tolerance to drought, or to some important diseases and pests. Yield and yield stability of 15 maize hybrids were observed in 24 environments. The level of the interaction effect of studied maize hybrids was identified by the AMMI analysis, while a number of bands positively related to yield and stability of studied maize hybrids were identified by a genetic characterization by RAPD markers. Bands positively related to yields were present to a greater extent in parents originating from the BSSS population, while bands positively related to stability were more present in parents originating from the Lancaster population.
AB  - Gentičari pokušavaju da objasne adaptabilnost i stabilnost genotipa u smislu poželjne kombinacije alela ispoljenih kroz epistazu. Međutim, stabinost definisana u jednom setu podataka je vrlo često zapravo stabilnost genotipa na dominantni stresni faktor u momentu izvođenja ogleda. Stoga, stabilnost rodnosti određenog genotipa može biti rezultat različitih faktora kao što su tolerantnost na sušu ili neku značajnu bolest ili štetočinu. U ovom radu ispitivan je nivo i stabilnost prinosa 15 hibrida kukuruza u 24 poljne sredine. Nivo interakcijskog efekta definisan je AMMI analizom. Genetička karakterizacija je urađena RAPD markerima. Trake pozitivno vezane za visok nivo prinosa su najčešće bile prisutne u roditeljima koji vode poreklo iz BSSS populacije dok su trake pozitivno vezane za stabilnost bile u značajnom procentu prisutne kod roditelja Lancaster populacije.

AB  - The objective of this study was to determine effects of the genotype, environment and genotype by environment interaction on the several quality and antioxidant-related traits of six bread and durum wheat genotypes bred at the Maize Research Institute, Serbia. Trials were conducted in two successive years under contrasting temperature and moisture conditions during spring growing season, thus, the environmental effects consider the influence of "hot/dry" and "cool/wet" season. On average, 1000-seed weight, protein, wet gluten and yellow pigment contents were higher in durum than in bread wheat in both years. On the other hand, the average content of alpha-, beta+gamma- and total tocopherols was higher in bread than in durum wheat. The content of total phenolics and antioxidant capacity was similar for both species. Higher temperatures and lower precipitations resulted in larger kernels, higher total protein content, as well as gluten, but negatively influenced antioxidant properties, total phenolics and lipid soluble antioxidants content. Based on ANOVA (analysis of variance), all sources of variation for each of the nine quality- and antioxidant-related traits were highly significant (P  lt  0.01). Average variances of studied traits associated with environmental factors were generally larger (41.6%) than those for genetic factors (23.9%) and genotype by environmental interaction effects (33.6%). Especially high environment variance was recorded for antioxidant capacity. Both, genotype and genotype by environment interaction had significant effects on wet gluten and lipid soluble antioxidants.

Combined S1-TC-RRS with consideration of CMS and dihaploids in maize

AB  - Herein, we present the combined S1-HS-RRS method using inbred testers (S1-TC-RRS) as a long-term maize breeding program, which increases the frequency of favorable alleles and maintains genetic variability in two genetically opposite populations. The method improves two different genetic sources simultaneously, where S1 families, developed by selfing phenotypically superior plants from both breeding populations are crossed with opposite inbred testers for specific combining ability selection, accompanied by selection of S1 families per se. A certain percentage of the evaluated S1 families is used for the next TC-RRS selection cycle. Maternal haploids from the selected S1 lines of each cycle of S1-TC-RRS can serve to produce elite 100% homozygous inbred lines (dihaploids) in a short time, which decreases the time and expenses of the selection cycle and influence the efficiency of seed production, as well as, variety protection rights. This elite lines than can be converted to CMS versions (paternal haploids), for the seed production, which lowers the costs of it.
AB  - Prestavlja se kombinovani S1-HS-RRS metod uz korišćenje inbred testera (S1-TCRRS), kao dugoročni program u oplemenjivanju kukuruza, koji povećava frekvenciju poželjnih alela i održava genetičku varijabilnost dve genetički opozitne populacije. Metodom se u isto vreme popravljaju dva genetički opozitna izvora, gde se S1 familije, dobijene samooplodnjom fenotipski superiornih biljaka iz obe populacije, ukrštaju sa opozitnim inbred testerom radi selekcije na posebne kombinacione sposobnosti, uz istovremenu selekciju S1 familija per se. Određen procenat ispitivanih S1 familja se koristi za sledeći TC-RRS ciklus selekcije. Uz pomoć metode majčinskih haploida, iz odabranih S1 linija svakog S1-TC-RRS ciklusa mogu se dobiti 100% homozigotne elitne inbred linije (dihaploidi) za kratko vreme, što smanjuje vreme i troškove selekcionog ciklusa, a utiče na efikasnost semenske proizvodnje i zaštitu oplemenjivačkih prava. Ove elitne inbred linije mogu se prevesti na cms verziju (ocinski haploidi), što smanjuje troškove u semenskoj proizvodnji.

AB  - The information on inter-relations of breeding material and genetic distinctness of available germplasm is important for deciding on the usage mode in breeding programmes. For the given research, phenotype description according to principles of UPOV descriptors was taken from 28 maize lines that are parental components of 20 ZP maize hybrids of known pedigree, from one year and two repetitions. Cluster analysis was conducted in order to establish whether the phenotype characterization of genotypes can be used for defining homogenous groups by relatedness, and to what extent the results are in accordance with the known information on the examined material's pedigree. The cluster analysis, Ward method, based on Squared Euclidian Distance, provided the best concordance with the information on the pedigree of the examined maize lines, so those results are presented in this paper and used for correspondence analysis.
AB  - Informacije o međusobnim odnosima oplemenjivačkog materijala i genetičke udaljenosti raspoložive germplazme su značajne za odluku o načinu korišćenja u oplemenjivačkim programima. Za dato istraživanje je po principima UPOV deskriptora uzet fenotipski opis 28 linija koje su roditeljske komponente 20 ZP hibrida kukuruza, poznatog pedigrea, iz jedne godine i dva ponavljanja. Urađena je klaster analiza sa ciljem da se utvrdi da li se može iskoristiti fenotipska karakterizacija genotipova po principima UPOV deskriptora za definisanje homogenih grupa po srodnosti i koliko su rezultati u saglasnosti sa poznatim informacijama o pedigreu ispitivanog materijala. Klaster analiza (Ward method) je dala najbolje slaganje sa informacijama o pedigreu ispitivanih linija kukuruza, pa su ti rezultati korišćeni za korespondencionu analizu.

The cluster analysis, Ward method, based on Squared Euclidian Distance, provided the best concordance with the information on the pedigree of the examined maize lines, so those results are presented in this paper and used for correspondence analysis., Informacije o međusobnim odnosima oplemenjivačkog materijala i genetičke udaljenosti raspoložive germplazme su značajne za odluku o načinu korišćenja u oplemenjivačkim programima. Za dato istraživanje je po principima UPOV deskriptora uzet fenotipski opis 28 linija koje su roditeljske komponente 20 ZP hibrida kukuruza, poznatog pedigrea, iz jedne godine i dva ponavljanja. Urađena je klaster analiza sa ciljem da se utvrdi da li se može iskoristiti fenotipska karakterizacija genotipova po principima UPOV deskriptora za definisanje homogenih grupa po srodnosti i koliko su rezultati u saglasnosti sa poznatim informacijama o pedigreu ispitivanog materijala. Klaster analiza (Ward method) je dala najbolje slaganje sa informacijama o pedigreu ispitivanih linija kukuruza, pa su ti rezultati korišćeni za korespondencionu analizu.",

AB  - It is generally known that a phenotype is formed on the basis of the capacity of its genotype affected by environmental factors. Yield stability is statistically expressed through the GxE interaction. The interaction is a part of the trial variation that includes the factor of the genotype and the factor of the environment. The presence of the qualitative interaction significantly makes difficult the selection of the best genotypes in the process of breeding. As long ago as the early 1960s, many researchers noticed that the application of linear regression could, in many cases, define adaptability and stability of a genotype. However, in cases when data are not well adjusted to the linear model, better results can be gained by the application of the multivariate models (PCA, AMMI, GGE). The estimated maize hybrid stability was compared in this study by linear (Finlay and Wilkinson and Eberhart and Russell models) and multivariate statistical models (AMMI model). Very similar results were obtained by all three models. It was probably due to one dominant factor in the hybrid x environment interaction (different precipitation sums for the environments and the length of the growing season for hybrids). The advantage was given to the AMMI model, as the model with one axis analyses the interaction equally well as linear models, while the model with two axes extracted another part of systemic variation of the interaction effect not adjusted to the linear model.
AB  - Opšte je poznato da se fenotip formira na osnovu kapaciteta svog genotipa pod uticajem faktora spoljašnje sredine. Prisustvo kvalitativne interakcije značajno otežava izbor najboljih genotipova u procesu selekcije. Još su ranih šezdesetih godina istraživači primetili da se primenom linearne regresije može, u velikom broju slučajeva, definisati adaptabilnost i stabilnost genotipa. Međutim, u slučajevima kada podaci nisu dobro prilagođeni linearnom modelu bolji rezultati se postižu primenom multivarijacionih modela (PCA, AMMI, GGE). U ovim istraživanjima izvršeno je poređenje procene stabilnosti hibrida kukuruza pomoću linearnih (Finlay i Wilkinson, Eberhart i Russell, modeli) i multivarijacionog modela statistike (AMMI model). Sva tri modela su dala veoma slične rezultate. Prednost se ipak daje AMMI modelu jer model sa jednom osom podjednako dobro kao i linearni modeli analizira interakciju, dok je model sa dve ose izdvojio još jedan deo sistematske varijacije interakcijskog efekta koji nije prilagođen linearnom modelu.

AB  - Choice of adequate sources of new favorable alleles to be included in elite maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids improvement programs is of the main interest for maize breeders. The objectives of this study were: to evaluate potential of seven maize populations as donors of new favorable alleles to improve the hybrid B73 x Mo17 for grain yield, ear length, number of rows, and weight of 1000 kernels, using 5 methods; to compare results obtained by the calculation of rank corellation coefficient (rs) after Spearman, as well as Kendall's coefficient of concordance (W) (Falconer, 1989). All evaluated maize populations had positive values of 1 (P) over bar (1)mu statistics proposed by Dudley (1987) for all traits. It confirms that broad based sources as favorable allele carriers could be useful in elite hybrid parents improvement. High level of agreement between three applied methods for maize populations evaluation as sources of favorable alleles were obtained for all investigated traits. The strongest corellation relationship between method proposed by Dudley (1987) and (X) over bar TC were calculated for number of rows (rs = 1**) and ear length (rs = 0.964**).

AB  - In this work, proteins and tryptophan content were analyzed in kernels of semi-flint, semi-dent, dent and specialty ZP maize hybrids. Protein content, as well as protein fraction, differed significantly among the analyzed maize genotypes. Globulin was the lowest fraction in kernels of all maize hybrids (6.69-11.03% of total protein). The content of albumin was the highest in sweet hybrids ZP 441su and ZP 461su i.e. 20.27% and 19.76% of total protein, respectively. α-Zein and G-3 glutelin were dominant protein fractions in all maize genotypes. The highest content of α-zein and G-3 glutelin was in the kernels of popping maize hybrid ZP 611k, i.e. 29.25 and 25.71% of total protein, respectively. All hybrids could be classified according to the tryptophan content in three groups - over 0.08% (sweet and waxy hybrids), from 0.06 to 0.07% (three standard dent hybrids, one semi-flint and two semident hybrid) and from 0.05 to 0.06% (two semi-flint, one semi-dent hybrids and popping).
AB  - U ovom radu ispitivan je sadržaj rastvorljivih proteina i triptofana u zrnu polutvrdunaca, poluzubana, zubana i specifičnih ZP hibrida kukuruza. Sadržaj ukupnih proteina, kao i sadržaj rastvorljivih proteinskih frakcija se statistički razlikovao između analiziranih genotipova kukuruza. Globulin je bio najmanjie zastupljena frakcija u kukuruznom zrnu (6.69-11.03% od ukupnih proteina). Sadržaj albuminske frakcije u zrnu hibrida šećeraca ZP 441su i ZP 461su iznosio je 20.27% i 19.76% od ukupnih proteina, dok je u zrnu ostalih hibrida bio značajno niži. α-zein i G3-glutelin bile su dominantne frakcije u zrnu svih ispitivanih genotipova kukuruza.
