Sweet corn (Zea mays L.): Fresh ear yield in dependance of genotype and the environment

AB  - Sweet corn is used as food in the milky stage of endosperm, when its kernel is tender, succulent and sweet. It is consumed in form of fresh ears, or it is industrially processed. Breeding of sweet corn has several equally important aims that are directed by the market demands and different modes of consumption. The ear yield, in sweet corn is the most important but not the only main goal of breeding. In the two year study (2013, 2014) we observed the effect of the genotype, year and their interactions on the yields of 8 sweet corn hybrids. Two of the hybrids were commercial and six were experimental hybrids. The field experiment was arranged according to the RCBD with four replications. Hybrids were harvested 23 days after pollination, i.e. silking. Average yield in 2013 was significantly higher (12.19 t ha-1) than in 2014 (11.49 t ha- 1). In 2013 it ranged from 10.21 t ha-1 for the experimental hybrid ZP 489/1su, up to 13.52 t ha-1 for the commercial hybrid ZP 355su. In 2014 the lowest yielding hybrid was ZP 485/1su (10.14 t ha-1) while the highest yielding was ZP 486/1su (13.41 t ha-1). On average those two were also the highest (13.19 t ha-1) and the lowest yielding (10.66 t ha-1) hybrids. Statistical analysis showed that the effect of genotype and the year, as well as their interactions had significant impact on the yield performances of sweet corn hybrids.
AB  - Kukuruz šećerac se koristi u mlečnoj fazi razvoja endosperma kada mu je zrno nežno, sočno i slatko. Koristi se za ishranu ljudi u svežem stanju, ili industrijski prerađen. Zahtevi tržišta i različiti načini upotrebe kukuruza šećerca usmeravaju oplemenjivače kukurza šećerca ka stvaranju ne samo visokoprinosnih hibrida. Za ovaj tip kukuruza, više nego za bilo koji drugi, veoma je bitan lep i primamljiv spoljašnji izgled klipa, sa pravilnim rasporedom zrna, a naročito su bitne organoleptičke karakteristike zrna - ukus, miris, tekstura i nežnost perikarpa. U toku dvogodišnjih ispitivanja (2013, 2014), posmatran je uticaj genotipa i spoljašnje sredine na prinos svežeg klipa kukuruza šećerca kod 8 hibrida. Dva hibrida ZP 355su i ZP 424su su komercijalni hibridi, dok je ostalih šest eksperimentalnih. Ogled je organizovan po RCBD principu u četiri ponavljanja. Berba je obavljena 23 dana nakon oprašivanja, tj. svilanja. Prosečan prinos svežeg klipa šećerca bio je značajno viši u 2013 godini (12.19 t ha-1) od prosečnog prinosa u 2014 (11.49 t ha-1). Najprinosniji hibrid 2013 godine bio je ZP 355su sa 13.52 t ha-1, dok je u 2014 najviši prinos postigao ZP 486/1su sa 13.41 t ha-1. Najniže prinose imali su ZP 489/1su (10.21 t ha-1) u 2013 i ZP 485/1su (10.14 t ha-1) u 2014 godini. Analizom varijanse utvrđeno je da efekat genotipa, godine, kao i njihova interakcija značajno utiču na prinos svežeg klipa kukuruza šećerca.

The influence of moisture content of grain on popping volume of popcorn hybrids (Zea mays l. everta)

AB  - The percentage of moisture content at the moment of popping has the most   significant impact on the popping volume of popcorn. In this research we   observed the influence of the optimal moisture content of 14.2 % and lower   moisture content (12, 10 and 8 %) on the popping volume of twelve popcorn   hybrids. At moisture content of 14.2 % the highest popping volume was   observed in ZP 611k (41.33 cm3/g). Four popcorn hybrids had very good   popping volume of over 39 cm3/g and four hybrids achieved medium popping   volume of 36-39 cm3/g, while three popcorn hybrids had unsatisfactory   popping volumes below 36 cm3/g. Hybrid ZP 501k was the one with the lowest   popping volume of 28.67 cm3/g. By reduction of percentage of moisture   content in the grain, significant reductions in popping volumes were   observed - in average 37.68, 27.97, 16.93 and 3.79 cm3/g, respectively.   Analysis of variance showed that genotype, moisture content and their   interaction had significant impact on the popping volume.
AB  - Zapremina kokičavosti u najvećoj meri zavisi od sadržaja vlage u zrnu u   momentu kokanja. Mnoga istraživanja pokazuju da je maksimalnu zapreminu   kokičavosti moguće ostvariti pri sadržaju vlage u zrnu od oko 14%. Pri   sadržaju vlage nižem od toga ne stvara se dovoljan pritisak za pucanje   perikarpa i raspršivanje skrobnih zrna. Takođe i veći sadržaj vlage umanjuje   zapreminu kokičavosti. U ovom istraživanju analiziran je uticaj optimalnog   (14,2%) i smanjenog sadržaja vlage (12, 10, i 8%) u zrnu kukuruza kokičara   na zapreminu kokičavosti. Posmatrano je 12 hibrida kokičara, stvorenih u   Institutu za kukuruz 'Zemun Polje'. Pri optimalnom sadržaju vlage u zrnu   najvišu zapreminu kokičavosti imao je hibrid ZP 611k (41,33 cm3/g), a još   četiri hibrida postiglo je veoma dobru zapreminu kokičavosti od preko 39   cm3/g. Četiri hibrida ostvarilo je osrednju zapreminu kokičavosti, u rasponu   od 36- 39 cm3/g, dok su tri hibrida bila sa niskom i nezadovoljavajućom   zapreminom kokičavosti ispod 36 cm3/g. Od toga je hibrid ZP501k pokazao   izuzetno nisku zapreminu kokičavosti od samo 28,67 cm3/g. Smanjenjem % vlage   u zrnu opadala je i zapremina kokičavosti i za sadržaje vlage u zrnu od   14,2%, 12%, 10% i 8% prosečno je za sve hibride iznosila 37,68, 27,97, 16,93   i 3,79 cm3/g. Analiza varijanse pokazala je da su na zapreminu kokičavosti   značajan uticaj imali hibridi i sadržaj vlage u zrnu, a takođe i interakcija   ova dva faktora. Ovo je potvrđeno i LSD testom koji naročito ukazuje na   statistički značajne razlike u pogledu zapremine kokičavosti u odnosu na   hibride i sadržaj vlage u zrnu. Comparison of selected maize hybrids for feed production

AB  - The objectives of this study were to investigate chemical composition and in   vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) as well as to determine correlations   between some important quality parameters of the maize hybrids developed for   silage preparation in order to evaluate their suitability for feed   production. The IVDMD coefficients of the whole plant ranged from 0.5667 to   0.6734 with the neutral detergent fibers digestibility (NDFD) varying from   166 to 322 g/kg. Regarding IVDMD, the hybrids ZP 427, ZP 648 and ZP 666 were   superior to other investigated hybrids. Very significant positive   correlation was found between IVDMD of the whole maize plant and NDFD   (r=0.79); very significant negative correlation was determined between L/NDF   of the whole maize plant and NDFD and IVDMD (r=-0.73, r=-0.91). Obtained   results are of an exceptional importance for the breeding programs and   selection of potentially most suitable hybrids for silage production.
AB  - Osnovni cilj istraživanja prikazanog u ovom radu bio je da se ispitaju   hemijski sastav i in vitro svarljivost suve materije odabranih domaćih   hibrida kukuruza različitog genetičkog porekla i grupa zrenja. Pored toga,   cilj je bio i da se odrede korelacije između pojedinih značajnih parametara   kvaliteta hibrida kukuruza selekcionisanih za pripremanje silaže, kako bi se   odredila njihova podobnost za proizvodnju hrane za životinje. Svi ispitivani   hibridi su komercijalni i njihova detaljna karakterizacija je neophodna za   proširenje njihove upotrebe u proizvodnji hrane za životinje. In vitro   svarljivost suve materije određivana je enzimskom metodom prema Aufréré.   Koeficijenti svarljivosti cele biljke kretali su se od 0,5667 do 0,6734, dok   se svarljivost NDF-a (NDFD) kretala od 166 do 322 g/kg. Odnos ligninske   frakcije i NDF-a cele biljke ispitivanih hibrida varirao je u rasponu od 30   do 39 g/kg. Na osnovu svarljivosti suve materije hibridi ZP 427, ZP 648 i ZP   666 su ocenjeni kao veoma pogodni za proizvodnju hrane za životinje.   Utvrđene su značajne razlike u hemijskom sastavu i svarljivosti suve   materije ispitivanih hibrida. Veoma značajna pozitivna korelacija određena   je između svarljivosti suve materije cele biljke i NDFD (r=0,79); veoma   značajna negativna korelacija između L/NDF cele biljke kukuruza i NDFD,   odnosno svarljivosti suve materije (r=- 0,73, r=-0,91). Rezultati ovog   istraživanja imaju veliki značaj za selekciju potencijalno najpogodnijih   hibrida za proizvodnju silaže. AB  - The study was conducted on the in vitro pollen germination at 26 degrees, 28 degrees, 32 degrees and 35 degrees C for 24h of male parental lines, pollen tube growth in vivo in cross pollination of female and male parental lines that make couples in four hybrids: ZP 504 su (female ZPPL 51 x male ZPPL 67); ZP 677 (female ZPPL 17 x male ZPPL 201); ZP 704 (female ZPPL 109 x male ZPPL 79), ZP 611 k (female ZPPL 126 x male ZPPL 105), and the open pollination of female parental lines of the above mentioned hybrids. Pollen germination in vitro and pollen tube growth dynamics in vivo showed different genotypic specificities with the tests applied. The obtained results were discussed in the context of reproductive biology of ZP maize lines and aimed to create the preconditions for successful management and direction of the process in practice -seed production in certain environmental conditions.

The prediction of heterosis based on the phenotypic distance of sweet maize parental lines

AB  - A relatively narrow genetic background, limited sources of germplasm that satisfies commercial standards, poorly defined heterotic groups, as well as a small span for yield and quality estimation are reasons for the modest improvement in sweet corn yields in comparison with standard grain quality maize. Therefore, any additional information could be of a great use. Based on the phenotypic characterization according to UPOV descriptor, phenotypic distances of 14 ZP sweet corn inbred lines were evaluated, and clustering was performed. Grouping showed that 9 out of 11 hybrids obtained by crossings of 14 sweet corn inbred lines had parental lines assigned to different subclusters. Two hybrids whose parental components belonged to the same subcluster had some important specific traits, such as early maturity (ZP 111su), and super-sweet germplasm (ZP 407su). Results obtained by this procedure could be of great assistance in the process of selecting parental lines for the future crossings.
AB  - Relativno uska genetička osnova, ograničeni resursi germplazme koja zadovoljava komercijalne standarde, loše definisane heterotične grupe kao i kratko vreme koje je na raspolaganju za procenu prinosa i kvaliteta su razlozi slabijeg unapređenja prinosa hibrida kukuruza šećerca u poređenju sa hibridima standardnog kvaliteta zrna. Stoga svaka dodatna informacija može da bude od velikog značaja. Na osnovu karakterizacije po UPOV deskriptoru urađena je klaster analiza 14 ZP linija kukuruza šećerca. Grupisanje je ukazalo da su se roditeljske linije 9 od 11 hibrida grupisale u različite podklastere. Dva hibrida, čije su se roditeljske linije grupisale u isti klaster su nosioci nekih specifičnih karakteristika kao što je ranostasnost (ZP 111su) i super-slatka germplazma (ZP 407su). The relationship between grain yield and other important traits of popping maize (Zea mays L. everta) hybrids

AB  - Popping maize is a specific type of maize differing from other types of maize by its capability to form a large puff or flake after explosive 'pop' that is a response to heating. Besides grain yield, an economically important trait, it is necessary that popping maize hybrids are characterized by a great popping volume and quality and testy flakes as well as other essential production traits. The grain yield of 12 selected popping maize hybrids was observed and the interrelationship among the grain yield, popping volume and the number of kernels per 10 g was established. Obtained results point out to a negative statistically significant correlation (-0,684*) between the grain yield and the popping volume. Furthermore, insignificant negative correlations (-0,135 and -0,399) were established between the grain yield and the number of kernels per 10 g and the popping volume and the number of kernels per 10 g, respectively. The traits observed in the present study are the quantitative ones, that is, their expression is determined by the greater number of genes and by environmental conditions.
AB  - Kukuruz kokičar je specifični tip kukuruza koji se razlikuje od ostalih tipova kukuruza po tome što formira krupnu 'pahuljicu' ili 'kokicu' posle eksplozije zrna kao odgovor na zagrevanje. Za hibride kukuruza kokičara je pored prinosa, ekonomski važne osobine, neophodno da se odlikuju visokom zapreminom kokičavosti i kvalitetnim i ukusnim 'kokicama', kao i drugim za proizvodnju važnim osobinama. U radu je ispitivan prinos zrna 12 odabranih hibrida kukuruza kokičara i međuzavisnost prinosa zrna i zapremine kokičavosti i broja zrna u 10 grama. Rezultati ukazuju na negativnu korelaciju koja je statistički značajna (-0,684*) između osobina prinos zrna i zapremina kokičavosti. Utvrđena je negativna korelacija koja nije statistički značajna (-0,135) za prinos zrna i broj zrna u 10 grama, kao i za zapreminu kokičavosti i broj zrna u 10 g (-0,399) koja je negativna ali nije statistički značajna. Osobine koje su proučavane u ovom radu su kvantitativne prirode, odnosno njihovo ispoljavanje je determinisano većim brojem gena i pod uticajem su delovanja spoljne sredine.

AB  - Due to its yields, biomass quality and biomass suitability for ensiling, diversity of use in feedstuff, maize is one of the most important forage plants. In comparison with other forage plants, the production of silage maize results in the greatest accumulation of solar energy per area unit. The positive correlation between a high density of net energy and the concentration of net energy as well as between digestibility of organic matter and the concentration of net energy is achieved in the produced biomass of maize plant. The yield of silage maize in dependence on the genetic potential of yield and agroecological conditions of the production ranges from 12 to 25 tonnes of the total dry matter per hectare at physiological maturity for ensiling with the dry matter content of 35-42%. This study presents results obtained in the long-term scientific and research programme on the improvement of ZP maize hybrids utilisation carried out in the Department of Technological Research at the Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje. The overall presentation of biomass quality parameters of six ZP maize hybrids (ZP 158, ZP 173/8, ZP 377, ZP 440, ZP 555 and ZP 679) of different genetic backgrounds intended for silage production is given in this study. Besides, interrelationships among these factors as well as their effects on maize biomass digestibility were established.
AB  - Po visini prinosa, kvalitetu biomase i njenoj pogodnosti za siliranje, raznovrsnosti upotrebe za ishranu domaćih životinja - kukuruz je najvažnija krmna biljka. U odnosu na druge krmne biljke proizvodnjom silažnog kukuruza postiže se najveća akumulacija sunčeve energije po jedinici površine. U dobijenoj biomasi kukuruzne biljke ostvaruje se pozitivna korelacija između visokog prinosa neto energije i koncentracije neto energije, kao i između svarljivosti organske materije i koncentracije neto energije. Prinos silažnog kukuruza u zavisnosti od genetskog potencijala (rodnosti) i agroekoloških uslova proizvodnje se kreće od 12-25 tona ukupne suve materije po hektaru u fazi fiziološke zrelosti za siliranje sa sadržajem suve materije od 35-42%. U ovom radu su prikazani rezultati dugoročnog naučnoistraživačkog programa na unapređenju korišćenja ZP hibrida kukuruza kao sirovine za proizvodnju silaže u Odseku za tehnološka istraživanja Instituta za kukuruz 'Zemun Polje'. AB  - Maize is one of the most important naturally renewable carbohydrate raw materials. The basic chemical composition (content of starch, protein, oil, crude fibre and ash) and the content of lignocellulose fibres (content of NDF, ADF, ADL, hemicelullose and cellulose) were determined for grain and the whole maize plant of the seven ZP maize hybrids. The negative very significant correlation between protein and starch content (r=-0.78) and significant correlation between oil and starch content (r=-0.65) was obtained in grain. The hybrid ZP 666 had the highest starch, crude fibre, ADF and cellulose content, high NDF content, the lowest ADL and low protein content in grain. The lowest starch, crude fibre, ADF, cellulose content and the highest protein and oil content in grain was determined in hybrid ZP 158. The hybrid ZP 730 had the highest and hybrid ZP158 the lowest dry matter yield of whole plant, whole plant without ear, ear and yield of digestible dry matter of whole plant. The differences in the contents of NDF, ADF, ADL, hemicelluloses, cellulose and digestibility of the whole maize plant among observed ZP hybrids were 6.21%, 4.01%, 0.79%, 5.65%, 3.88% and 6.79%, respectively. Obtained values for the content of lignocellulose fibres differed significantly among hybrids and were closely related to digestibility.
AB  - Kukuruz je jedna od najznačajnijih prirodno obnovljivih ugljenohidratnih sirovina. Određivan je osnovni hemijski sastav (sadržaj skroba, proteina, ulja, sirovih vlakana i pepela) i sadržaj lignoceluloznih vlakana (sadržaj NDF, ADF, ADL, himiceluloze i celuloze) zrna i cele biljke sedam ZP hibrida. Dobijena je negativna značajna korelacija između sadržaja proteina i skroba (r=-0,78) i ulja i skroba (r=- 0,65) u zrnu. Hibrid ZP 666 je imao naveći sadržaj skroba, sirovih vlakana i celuloze, visok sadržaj NDF, najniži sadržaj ADL i nizak saržaj protina u zrnu. Najniži sadržaj skroba, sirovih vlakana, ADF i celuloze i najviši sadržaj proteina i ulja u zrnu su određeni kod hibrida ZP 158. Hibrid ZP 730 je imao najviši a hibrid ZP158 najniži prinos suve materije cele biljke, cele biljke bez klipa, klipa i prinos svarljive suve materije cele biljke. Variability of yield and kernel quality parameters of popcorn hybrids (Zea mays L. Everta)

AB  - The experiment with 12 popcorn hybrids was set up according to the RCB design in three replicates. Examined traits were: grain yield (GY), popping volume (PV) and number of kernels per 10g (NK). ANOVA showed statistical differences among examined genotypes according to all three traits. Grain yield of the hybrids varied from 3.36 t/ha (ZPSK 645/1k) up to 6.07 t/ha (ZPSK 611k). The lowest popping volume had hybrid ZPSK 501k (27.33 cm3/g), which is considered unsatisfactory, while five hybrids had good popping volume over 38.00 cm3/g. Negative correlation was determined between GY and PV (-0.52), which although wasn't significant indicated that higher yielding hybrids often have lower popping volumes. Significant correlation was between GY and NK (-0.70*), and between NK and PV (0.66*). These results point out to the fact that breeding of popcorn is very complex process, for there is necessity of producing high yielding and good popping quality hybrids, which is mostly contradictory.
AB  - Definisanje visokog kvaliteta kukuruza kokičara zavisi od aspekta kako proizvođača, dorađivača tako i potrošača. Zbog toga se posebna pažnja u oplemenjivanju kukuruza kokičara posvećuje povećanju prinosa, ali sa zadržavanjem i povećanjem kvaliteta iskokaknog i neiskokanog zrna. Ogled sa 12 hibrida kukuruza kokičara postavljen je po principu slučajnog bloka u 3 ponavljanja. Ispitivane su osobine: prinos zrna kukuruza, zapremina kokičavosti i broj zrna u 10 g. Analiza varijanse pokazala je da postoje statistički značajne razlike između posmatranih genotipova u pogledu sve tri osobine. Prinos zrna hibrida u ovom istraživanju, kretao se od 3,36 t/ha (ZPSK 645/1k) do 6,07 t/ha (ZPSK 611k). Najmanju zapreminu ostvario je hibrid ZPSK 501k (27,33 cm3/g), što se smatra izuzetno niskom zapreminom, dok je 5 hibrida imalo dobru zapreminu kokičavosti od preko 38,00 cm3/g. Najvišu zapreminu kokičavosti ostvario je ZPSK 649/1k sa 39,50 cm3/g. Šest hibrida iz ovog istraživanja imalo je krupno zrno, pet hibrida je bilo srednje krupnoće zrna, dok je hibrid ZPSK 501k (83 zrna u 10 g) bio sitnog zrna. Negativna korelacija utvrđena je između prinosa i zapremine kokičavosti (-0,52), koja iako nije bila značajna ukazuje na srednju jačinu zavisnosti između parametara i na to da prinosniji hibridi uglavnom imaju manju zapreminu kokičavosti. Značajna negativna korelacija utvrđena je između prinosa i broja zrna u 10 g (-0,70*), dok je značajna pozitivna korelacija bila je između broja zrna u 10 g i zapremine kokičavosti (0,66*). Ovakvi rezultati govore u prilog komleksnosti procesa oplemenjivanja kukuruza kokičara.

Inheritance of ear yield and its components in sweet corn (Zea mays L. saccharat)

AB  - Sweet corn is mutation of field corn in which greater accumulation of sugars and water soluble polysaccharides provide specific taste and texture. It is consumed in the milky stage of the endosperm, so the product's quality and its appearance are important as well as ear yield. That is why breeders pay the same attention to these traits in breeding process. In this paper we analyzed combining ability and mode of inheritance of ear yield and yield components in sweet corn, such as kernel-row number, and ear length, by the use of diallel crosses of six sweet corn inbred lines. ANOVA showed that estimates of general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining abilities were highly significant (p lt 0.01) for all observed traits. Nonaditive gene effects were more significant in the expression of ear yield and ear length, while additive gene effects were more important for kernel-row number. Analysis of components of genetic variance was in agreement with the results of ANOVA of combining ability. The mode of inheritance of kernel-row number was partial dominance, while overdominance was of greater importance for ear yield, and ear length. Inbred line L4 was indicted as the most desirable, among the examined set of inbreds, in the further sweet corn breeding programs, due to its significant GCA effects concerning ear yield and number of kernels per ear, and ear yield performances of the hybrids in which one of the components was this inbred, according to SCA and hetrosis estimates.
AB  - Kukuruz šećerac predstavlja mutaciju kukuruza standardnog kvaliteta zrna, kod koga dolazi do povećanog nakupljanja šećera i u vodi rastvorljivih polisaharda, što njegovom zrnu obezbeđuje specifičan ukus i teksturu. S obzirom da se koristi u mlečnoj fazi razvoja endosperma, kvalitet i izgled klipa i zrna kukuruza šećerca podjednako su važni kao i sam prinos. U ovom radu proučavane su kombinacione sposobnosti šest samooplodnih linija kukuruza šećerca i način nasleđivanja prinosa klipa i komponenti prinosa, kao što su broj redova zrna i dužina klipa, metodom dialelne analize. Ananliza varijanse kombinacionih sposobnosti je pokazala visoko značajne vrednosti (p lt 0.01) opštih (GCA) i posebnih (PCA) kombinacionih sposobnosti za sve posmatrane osobine. Neaditivno delovanje gena bilo je značajnije za osobine prinos klipa i dužinu klipa, dok je aditivno delovanje gena bilo odlučujuće za ekspresiju broja redova zrna. Analiza komponenti genetičke varijanse bila je u saglasnosti sa razultatima ANOVA-e kombinacionih spososbnosti. Način nasleđivanja broja redova zrna bila je parcijalna dominacija, dok je za prinos klipa i dužinu klipa to bila superdominacija. Samooplodna linija L4 je posmatrajući vrednosti OKS za prinos klipa i broj redova zrna, kao i vrednosti PKS hibridnih kombinacija čija je bila komponenta, ocenjena kao najperspektivnija u daljem procesu oplemenjivanja kukuruza šećerca.

AB  - The narrowness of sweet corn genetic base limited to the great extent its genetic improvement. This is associated to the fact that sweet corn does not have well defined heterotic groups such as those important in field corn breeding, and therefore application of marker assisted selection becomes a necessity. The objective of this study was to determine genetic similarity (GS) of six sweet corn inbred lines selected at Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje, based on SSR markers and to compare it with data of specific combining ability (SCA) and heterosis for fresh ear yield, obtained in a diallel study. SSR markers showed that all genotypes had specific genetic pattern. Estimates of GS varied from 0.422 (L4 - L2) up to 0.756 (L6 - L5). Cluster analysis and PCA showed clear groupings of inbreds into two subclusters, with inbred L3 less related to the others. Results of diallel analysis showed that data of heterosis and SCA were in concurrence with the data of GS based on SSR markers. Hybrid combinations with higher estimates of SCA and heterosis expressed less genetic similarity with each other (such in hybrids L2 x L1; L6 x L2; L3 x L2 and L5 x L2), while inbreds that were genetically most similar L5 and L6 expressed low heterosis and SCA in their hybrid combination. That was confirmed by rank correlation coefficients, whose estimates were negative and in most cases significant, indicating that more similar inbreds produced less expressed effects of heterosis and SCA.

AB  - The organisation of germplasm into genetically divergent groups is of extreme importance for the development of hybrid varieties in which the identification and exploitation of heterosis is very important for the final result of breeding. It can also be beneficial for breeding of self-pollination varieties, clones and synthetics. The discovery of heterotic groups in standard grain quality maize significantly improved the process of testing. The improvement in sweet maize was relatively modest in comparison to standard grain quality maize due to a relatively narrow genetic base of sweet maize, then poorly defined heterotic relations, scarce sources of germplasm that satisfy commercial standards, poor seed vigour, low quality of root and stalk, as well as, a short period of time for the estimation of yield and quality. The efficiency of hybrid breeding programmes would be significantly higher if heterosis could be predicted prior to the evaluation in the field. The application of the multivariate analysis method to data of phenotypic characterization according to the UPOV Descriptor was an attempt to establish whether such a procedure can be beneficial for the determination of related groups and whether the phenotypic distance, obtained on the basis of a visual estimation of a plant group, can be an indicator of heterosis. Obtained results indicate that clustering is highly analogous to the pedigree. Since sweet maize breeders have at their disposal less significant genetic variability and search for the development and defining of heterotic groups, as such a procedure can be useful in both, the process of the hybrids development and the process of new inbreed development and genetic variability increasing. Certainly, further systematic studies aimed at this direction are necessary to reliably ascertain that the phenotypic distance is a justifiable indicator of heterosis.
AB  - Organizacija germ-plazme u genetički divergentne grupe je od izuzetne važnosti prilikom stvaranja hibridnih sorti, gde je identifikacija i iskorišćavanje fenomena heterozisa veoma važno za krajnji ishod oplemenjivanja. Ali takođe može biti od pomoći u oplemenjivanju slobodno oprašujućih sorti, klonova i sintetika. Otkriće heterotičnih grupa kod standardnog kukuruza je znatno unapredilo proces testiranja. Kod kukuruza šećerca, elativno uska genetička osnova, malobrojni izvori germ-plazme koji zadovoljavaju komercijalne standarde, slaba životna sposobnost semena, loš kvalitet korena i stabla kao i kratak period za ocenu prinosa i kvaliteta su razlozi relativno skromnog unapređenja prinosa u poređenju sa standardnim kukuruzom. Efikasnost hibridnih oplemenjivačkih programa bi se znatno moga povećati ako bi bilo moguće predvideti heterizis pre evaluacije u polju. Primenjujući multivarijacione metode statistike na podatke fenotipske karakterizacije po UPOV deskriptoru pokušano je da se istraži da li ovakva procedura može biti od pomoći prilikom određivanja grupa po srodnosti i da li fenotipska distanca, dobijena na osnovu vizuelne ocene grupe biljaka, može biti indikator heterozisa. Dobijeni rezultati ukazuju da postoji grupisanje koje je u visokoj saglasnosti sa pedigreom. Kako oplemenjivači kukuruza šećerca imaju na raspolaganju manju genetičku varijabilnost i u potrazi su za razvojem i definisanjem heterotičnih grupa, ovakva procedura može biti od koristi kako u procesu stvaranja hibrida tako i u procesu stvaranje novih linija i povećanja genetičke varijabilnosti. Svakako da su sistematska istraživanja u ovom pravcu potrebna da bi se moglo sa pouzdanošću tvrditi da je fenotipska distanca pouzdan indikator heterizisa.

Genetic variability as background for the achievements and prospects of the maize utilisation development

AB  - Maize is one of the most important crops, and as such, one of the most significant naturally renewable carbohydrate raw materials of energy and numerous very different products. The dominance and superiority of maize are primarily caused by the extremely wide, very diversified and enormous possibilities of its utilisation. Previous accomplishments are presented and prospective developments of the maize chemistry and technology, i.e. maize utilisation in our country and worldwide were discussed in the present study. The objective of this study was to advert to this section of science that is full of real and great challenges. Changes in the maize production and utilisation are described. Some very important questions were asked, such as: what is it that makes maize such a valuable, naturally renewable raw material, how and why do we sow maize and harvest energy and products?.
AB  - Kukuruz je je jedna od najznačajnijih gajenih biljaka i kao takav ujedno i jedna od najznačajnijih prirodno obnovljivih ugljenohidratnih sirovina energije i jako velikog broja veoma različitih proizvoda. Dominacija i superiorni položaj kukuruza uslovljeni su izuzetno širokim, veoma raznovrsnim i ogromnim mogućnostima njegovog korišćenja. U ovom radu su prikazana dosadašnja dostignuća i diskutovane su perspektive budućeg razvoja hemije i tehnologije kukuruza, odnosno korišćenja kukuruza u našoj zemlji i u svetu. Cilj rada je bio da skrene pažnja na ovaj sektor nauke koji je pun pravih i velikih izazova. Opisane su promene u proizvodnji i korišćenju kukuruza. Postavljena su i neka od veoma važnih pitanja kao na primer: šta je to što čini kukuruz toliko i tako vrednom prirodnoobnovljivom sirovinom, šta je to kvalitet zrna kukuruza, kako i zašto sejemo kukuruz a žanjemo energiju i proizvode?.

Inheritance and a correlation between ear yield and shelling percentage in sweet maize (Zea mays L. saccharata)

AB  - In the present study, the mode of inheritance and combining abilities of six sweet maize inbred lines for ear yield and shelling percentage were observed by the method of diallel analysis. Estimates of general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining abilities were highly significant (p lt 0.01) for both observed traits. Dominant gene effects were more significant for ear yield, while additive gene effects were more important for shelling percentage. Significant GCA for ear yield was observed only for L4, which also showed high potential in hybrid combinations with significant SCA estimates. For shelling percentage, significant GCA estimates were observed for L1 and L2, and these inbreds were also components of hybrids with significant SCA estimates. The correlation between ear yield and shelling percentage was highly significant (0.58**) among observed genotypes, showing a positive, medium high correlation and pointing out to the fact that high yielding genotypes also have high shelling percentage and vice versa.
AB  - U radu je metodom dialelnog ukrštanja (6x6) proučavan način nasleđivanja i kombinacione sposobnosti šest samooplodnih linija kukuruza šećerca (L1-L6) za svojstva prinos klipa kukuruza i randman zrna. Analizom varijanse kombinacionih sposobnosti utvrđena je visoka značajnost vrednosti opštih (OKS) i posebnih kombinacionih sposobnosti (PKS) za oba svojstva. Presudan uticaj neaditivnog delovanja gena utvrđen je za nasleđivanje prinosa klipa, dok je za randman zrna aditivno delovanje gena bilo značajnije. Značajna vrednost OKS linija za prinos klipa kukuruza šećerca utvrđena je samo kod linije L4, koja se pokazala i kao dobar kombinator u hibridnim kombinacijama sa visokim vrednostima PKS. U slučaju randmana zrna visokoznačajne vrednosti OKS utvrđene su za linije L1 i L2, koje su takođe bile komponente hibrida sa visokoznačajnim vrednostima PKS. Koeficijentom korelacije ranga utvrđena je visokoznačajna vrednost (0,58**) između prinosa klipa i randmana zrna kukuruza šećerca, što ukazuje na srednje jaku zavisnost između ova dva svojstva i činjenicu da posmatrani genotipovi kukuruza šećerca koji se odlikuju visokim prinosom imaju i veći randman zrna i obratno.

AB  - The breeding programme on speciality maize with specific traits was established at the Maize Research Institute, Zemun Polje, several decades ago. The initial material was collected, new methods applying to breeding of speciality maize, i.e. popping maize, sweet maize and white-seeded maize, were introduced. The aim was to enhance and improve variability of the initial material for breeding these three types of maize. Then, inbred lines of good combining abilities were developed and used as components for deriving new superior popping maize hybrids, sweet maize hybrids and white-seeded maize hybrids. Breeding was aimed at the increase of the popping volume of new inbred lines and hybrids of popping maize, then at the improvement of quality of popped kernels - flakes, and at yield increasing. Furthermore, the aim was to improve quality of sweet maize for different purposes, industrial processing and consumption as fresh food and also to improve yield and quality of white-seeded maize. As a result of such breeding, 28, 11 and 9 sweet maize, popping maize and white-seeded maize hybrids were released, respectively.
AB  - U Institutu za kukuruz 'Zemun Polje', Beograd, je pre nekoliko decenija zasnovan program oplemenjivanja kukuruza specifičnih svojstava. Prikupljan je početni materijal, radilo se na upoznavanju najnovijih metoda koje se koriste u oplemenjivanju kukuruza specifičnih osobina, tj. kokičara, šećerca i kukuruza belog zrna. Cilj je bio povećanje i poboljšanje varijabilnosti početnog materijala za oplemenjivanje ova tri tipa kukuruza. Zatim, stvaranje samooplodnih linija visoke kombinacione vrednosti koje se koriste kao komponente za stvaranje novih superiornijih hibrida kukuruza šećerca i kokičara i kukuruza belog zrna. Oplemenjivanje je usmereno na povećanje zapremine kokičavosti novih samooplodnih linija i hibrida kokičara, kvaliteta iskokanog zrna 'kokica' i prinosa zrna. Zatim, poboljšanju kvaliteta kukuruza šećerca za različite načine korišćenja, industrijska prerada i potrošnja u svežem stanju i povećanju prinosa i kvaliteta hibrida belog zrna. Rezultat dosadasnjeg rada je veći broj priznatih hibrida kukuruza šećerca (28), kokičara (11) i kukuruza belog zrna (9).

Genetic Divergence Estimated by RAPD Markers and its Relationship with Hybrid Performance in Popcorn

AB  - The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity of six popcorn inbred lines and to determine the relationship between combing ability and heterosis for grain yield and popping expansion and genetic distance, using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) molecular markers. The genetic distance based on Dice coefficient ranged from 0.086 to 0.212. The highest genetic distance was found between inbreds ZPL2 and ZPL5. Hybrid combination of these two inbreds has the highest grain yield, grain yield heterosis and popping expansion heterosis. A positive and significant correlation was observed in parental lines between grain yield and SCA with genetic distance based on RAPD markers. The genetic divergence, however, was not enough to determine the grain yield heterosis as well as heterosis and specific combining ability for popping expansion.

Sweet maize breeding for different consumption purposes

AB  - Sweet maize is consumed as human food in the milk stage of the endosperm development when the kernel is soft, sweet and succulent. The highest number of commercial sweet maize hybrids is based on one or more recessive alleles that alter a carbohydrate content of the endosperm. Sweet maize is produced for different purposes. Each mode of its utilization, beside the yield and softness of the pericarp, has its specific requirements for certain quality. The taste (sweetness) and the ear appearance are the most important for sweet maize fresh market. Sweet maize that is transported needs to be of the uniform maturity in order to reduce the percentage of residues at mechanical harvest of the crop. Maintenance of sweetness after transport is also a very important trait. The shape and uniformity of the ear, the kernel color structure and taste are very important in selection of hybrids for the commercial production. Commercial processing (tinning or freezing) requires the uniform size and shape of the ear. The kernel structure, shape, size and fulfillment after cutting are requirements for several modes of utilization (processing) of sweet maize.
AB  - Kukuruz šećerac se koristi za ljudsku ishranu u mlečnoj fazi razvoja endosperma, kada je zrno nežno, sočno i slatko. Najveći broj komercijalnih hibrida kukuruza šećerca se zasniva na jednom ili više recesivnih alela koji menjaju ugljenohidratni sastav endosperma. Kukuruz šećerac se proizvodi za različite načine korišćenja. Svaki način iskorišćavanja šećerca, pored prinosa i nežnosti perikarpa, ima specifične zahteve za određenim kvalitetom. Ukus (slatkoća) i izgled klipa su na prvom mestu po važnosti za potrošnju šećerca u svežem stanju. Šećerac koji se transportuje na velika rastojanja treba da ima uniformno stasavanje (sazrevanje) klipova da bi se redukovao procenat otpadaka u mehaničkoj berbi useva. Zadržavanje slatkoće posle transporta je takođe veoma važna osobina. Oblik i ujednačenost klipa, boja zrna, građa i ukus su veoma važni kod izbora hibrida za komercijalnu proizvodnju. Komercijalna prerada (konzerviranje ili zamrzavanje) zahteva ujednačenu veličinu i oblik klipa. Građa zrna, oblik, veličina i ispunjenost zrna posle rezanja su zahtevi za više načina iskorišćavanja (prerade) šećerca.

Yields of ZP sweet maize hybrids in dependence on sowing densities

AB  - Sweet maize differs from maize of standard grain quality by many important traits that affect the ear appearance, and especially by traits controlling taste. The ear appearance trait encompasses the kernel row number, configuration, row pattern (direction and arrangement), seed set, kernel width and depth, ear shape and size. The quality of immature kernels is controlled by genes by which sweet maize differs from common maize. In order to obtain high-ranking and high-quality yields, it is necessary to provide the most suitable cropping practices for sweet maize hybrids developed at the Maize Research Institute, Zemun Polje. The adequate sowing density is one of more important elements of correct cropping practices. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of four sowing densities in four ZP sweet maize hybrids of different FAO maturity groups on ear qualitative traits and yields obtained on chernozem type of soil in Zemun Polje. The observed traits of sweet maize (ear length, kernel row number, number of kernels per row, yield and shelling percentage) significantly varied over years. The higher sowing density was the higher yield of sweet maize was, hence the highest ear yield of 9.67 t ha-1 , on the average for all four hybrids, was recorded at the highest sowing density of 70,000 plants ha-1. The highest yield was detected in the hybrid ZP 424su. The highest shelling percentage (67.81%) was found in the hybrid ZP 521su at the sowing density of 60,000 plants ha-1. Generally, it can be stated that sweet maize hybrids of a shorter growing season (FAO 400) could be cultivated up to 70,000 plants ha-1, while those of a longer growing season (FAO 500) could be grown up to 60,000 plants ha-1. In such a way, the most favorable parameters of yields and the highest yields can be obtained.
AB  - Kukuruz šećerac se razlikuje od kukuruza standardnog kvaliteta zrna po većem broju važnih osobina koje uslovljavaju izgled klipa, a posebno po osobinama koje uslovljavaju ukus. Osobina izgled klipa obuhvata broj redova zrna, konfiguraciju, raspored redova (pravac i uređenje), ozrnjenost, širinu i dubinu zrna, oblik i veličinu klipa. Kvalitet nezrelog zrna određuju geni po kojima se šećerac razlikuje od običnog kukuruza. Za hibride kukuruza šećerca selekcionisane u Institutu za kukuruz je potrebno odrediti najpogodniju tehnologiju gajenja, kako bi oni ostvarili visoke i kvalitetne prinose. Jedan od važnih elemenata pravilne tehnologije gajenja šećerca je adekvatna gustina setve. Cilj rada je bio da se utvrdi efekat četiri gustine setve kod četiri ZP hibrida kukuruza šećerca različitih FAO grupa zrenje na kvalitativne karakteristike klipa i visinu prinosa na černozemu u Zemun Polju. Ispitivane osobine dužina klipa, broj redova zrna, broj zrna u redu, prinos i randman kukuruza šećerca vrlo su značajno varirale po godinama. Prinos kukuruza šećerca se povećavao sa povećanjem gustine gajenja pa je najveći prinos klipa, prosečno za sva četiri hibrida, od 9.67 t ha-1 utvrđen u najvećoj gustini od 70000 bilj. ha-1. MeČu ispitivanim hibridima najveći prinos klipa je imao hibrid ZP 424su. Najbolji randman je imao hibrid ZP 521su u gustini od 60000 bilj/ha - 67.81%. Gledano u celini može se konstatovati da je hibride šećerce kraće vegetacije (FAO 400) moguće gajiti do 70000 bilj/ha a one duže vegetacije (FAO 500) do 60000 bilj/ha. Na taj način se dobijaju najpovoljniji parametri prinosa i najveći prinosi.

Ispitivane osobine dužina klipa, broj redova zrna, broj zrna u redu, prinos i randman kukuruza šećerca vrlo su značajno varirale po godinama. Prinos kukuruza šećerca se povećavao sa povećanjem gustine gajenja pa je najveći prinos klipa, prosečno za sva četiri hibrida, od 9.67 t ha-1 utvrđen u najvećoj gustini od 70000 bilj. ha-1. MeČu ispitivanim hibridima najveći prinos klipa je imao hibrid ZP 424su. Najbolji randman je imao hibrid ZP 521su u gustini od 60000 bilj/ha - 67.81%. Gledano u celini može se konstatovati da je hibride šećerce kraće vegetacije (FAO 400) moguće gajiti do 70000 bilj/ha a one duže vegetacije (FAO 500) do 60000 bilj/ha. Na taj način se dobijaju najpovoljniji parametri prinosa i najveći prinosi.",

AB  - Popping volume and yield are traits caused by several heredity factors. It is difficult to obtain superior genotypes for both traits but it is possible to develop genotypes with good popping volume and satisfactory yield. The hybrid ZPPL2 x ZPPL5 was superior in yield, heterosis and SCA for both yield and popping volume. As inbred ZPPL4 in all combinations has a good value for popping volume could be concluded that this inbred may be used as parent in further crosses. Analysis of variance of the combining ability indicating significant SCA effect for grain yield, and significant both GCA and SCA effects for popping volume. Therefore it can be stated that yield is influenced by non-additive and popping volume by both additive and non- additive gene effects. Analysis of variance of genetic components for popping volume indicates that the additive as well as dominant components significantly affected the inheritance of this trait in popcorn. The objective of this study was to evaluate heteorsis and combing ability for grain yield and popping volume in dialalel set of six maize inbred lines.
AB  - Zapremina kokičavosti i prinos su svojstva pod uticajem nekoliko naslednih faktora. Teško je dobiti superiorne genotipove za oba svojstva ali je moguće dobiti genotip sa dobrom zapreminom kokičavosti i zadovoljavajućim prinosom. Hibrid ZPPL2 x ZPPL5 je superioran za prinos, heterozis i PKS za prinos i zapreminu kokičavosti. Kako linija ZPPL4 u svim kombinacijama ima dobre vrednosti za zapreminu kokičavosti može se zaključiti da ova linija se može koristiti kao roditelj u budućim ukrštanjima. Analiza varijanse za kombinacionu sposobnost ukazuje na značajan PKS efekat za prinos zrna, značajan PKS i OKS efekat za zapreminu kokičavosti. Prinos je pod uticajem neaditivnih a zapremina kokičavosti i aditivnih i neaditivnih gena. Analiza varijanse genetičkih komponenti za zapreminu kokičavosti ukazuje da aditivne kao i dominatne komponente značajno utiču na nasleđivanje ovog svojstva kod kokičara. Cilj ovih istraživanja bio je ispitivanje heteorzisa i kombinacionih sposobnosti za prinos zrna i zapreminu kokičavosti u dialelnom setu šest linija kukuruza.

Relation between grain yield and grain quality of popcorn hybrids (Zea mays everta Sturt.)

AB  - Popcorn breeding programs develop at the same time in two directions with equal significance. One of them is producing higher yielding hybrids and the other is developing hybrids with higher popping volumes. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications over three locations. Three traits were analyzed, grain yield, popping expansion and No. of kernals per 10g. ANOVA showed very significant influence of genotype, location and interaction of G x L, for all three traits. This points out that those traits are not influenced only by genetic factors, but also by environmental factors and the interaction of those two factors. Spearman’s correlation coefficient was established between examined traits. All correlations were negative and non significant. Nevertheless, especially correlation between grain yield and popping volume (rp-z=-0.10) indicated that hybrids with higher yields produced lower popping volumes. This once more concluded that breeding of popcorn is very complex process, for there is a necessity for high yielding and good popping quality hybrids.
AB  - Oplemenjivanje kukuruza kokičara odvija se sa istom značajnošću u dva smera: povećanja prinosa zrna i povećanja zapremine iskokanog zrna. Prinos kao najvažnija ekonomska karakteristika kod svih kultura u slučaju kukuruza kokičara je u istom rangu kao i osobina zapremina kokičavosti. Ogled sa 12 hibrida kukuruza kokičara postavljen je po principu slučajnog bloka u četiri ponavljanja na tri lokacije. Ispitivane su osobine prinos zrna kukuruza, zapremina kokičavosti i broj zrna u 10 g. Analiza varijanse pokazala je visoku značajnost lokacije, genotipa i interakcije ova dva faktora za sve tri osobine. Ovo ukazuje na činjenicu da su posmatrane osobine pod uticajem ne samo genetičkih faktora, već i pod velikim uticajem faktora sredine kao i interakcije genotip x sredina. Utvrđena je korelacija između posmatranih osobina, pomoću Spaerman-ovog koeficijenta korelacije ranga. Negativna korelacija bila je između prinosa i zapremine kokičavosti r(p-z)= -0,1, koja iako nije bila statistički značajna ukazuje na to da prinosniji hibridi kukuruza kokičara daju zrno manje zapremine kokičavosti. Ovakvi rezultati govore u prilog kompleksnosti procesa oplemenjivanja kukruza kokičara, budući da su zahtevi postavljeni i u smislu povećanja prinosa i povećanja zapremine kokičavosti.

AB  - Sweet corn differs from field corn in many important traits. So its breeding although includes some standard procedures demand application of techniques that are important for determining special traits, all because of the specificity of its usage. Application of molecular markers becomes almost a necessity for the breeding of sweet corn, especially because this is the type of maize in which still no definitive heterotic patterns have been determined. So getting to know genetic divergence of the sweet corn inbred lines is of great importance for its breeding. In this paper we analyzed genetic similarity of six sweet corn inbreds based on SSR markers. 40 SSR primers were used in DNA amplification. Results were compared and correlated with the data on specific combining ability, obtained by the diallel analysis. The results of SCA were in concurrence with genetic similarity. Values of rank correlation coefficient were negative, indicating that more similar inbred lines had smaller estimates of SCA, and lines that were less similar had higher estimates of SCA. Rank correlation coefficient between SCA and GS according to Dice coefficient was between -0,16 and -0,57*.
AB  - Kukuruz šećerac razlikuje se od kukuruza standardnog kvaliteta zrna u većem broju značajnih osobina. Zbog toga oplemenjivanje ove kulture pored standardnih procedura obuhvata i neke posebne, a sve zbog specifičnosti njegovog korišćenja. Primena molekularnih markera u oplemenjivanju šećerca postaje neophodnost, naročito zbog toga što kod ovog tipa kukuruza još uvek nisu utvrđene heterotične grupe, pa je upoznavanje genetičke varijabilnosti samooplodnih linija šećerca na molekularnom nivou od velikog značaja za njegovo oplemenjivanje. U radu analizirana je genetička sličnost 6 samooplodnih linija kukuruza šećerca na osnovu SSR markera. Primenjen je set od 40 prajmera. Dobijeni rezultati upoređeni sa podacima specifičnih kombinacionih sposobnosti prinosa klipa, dobijenih dialelnom analizom. Koeficijent korelacije ranga između GS i PKS bio je negativan i u jednom slučaju statistički značajan, a kretao se od -0,16 and -0,57*. Negativna vrednost ovog koeficijenta ukazuje na to da se sa povećanjem sličnosti genotipova smanjuje vrednost PKS i obrnuto. Statistička značajnost ovog koeficijenta ukazuje na pozdanost primene SSR markera u proceni genetičke sličnosti i planiranju perspektivnih ukrštanja.

AB  - The highest number of commercial sweet maize hybrids is based on one or more recessive alleles that alter a carbohydrate content of endosperm. Sweet maize is consumed as human food in the milk stage of the endosperm development when the kernel is soft, sweet and succulent. Different genes used in sweet maize breeding stipulate a diverse carbohydrate content and grain quality that differ from standard quality maize. Sucrose is the dominant sugar in sweet maize grain in the milk stage of the endosperm development. It gives gain its sweetness and determines quality of immature grain that is used for consumption. Timely harvest of sweet maize is very important as the maximum sucrose content means very high grain quality. Attention came to focus on changes of the carbohydrate content during the endosperm development of five ZP sweet maize hybrids. The contents of sucrose, glucose and fructose were determined 10, 15, 20, 23, 25 and 28 days after pollination. The obtained results show a maximum sucrose content on the 23rd day after pollination meaning that time is a right time for harvest.
AB  - Najveći broj komercijalnih hibrida kukuruza šećerca se zasniva na jednom ili više recesivnih alela koji menjaju ugljenohidratni sastav endosperma. Kukuruz šećerac se koristi za ljudsku ishranu u mlečnoj fazi razvoja endosperma, kada je zrno slatko, nežno i sočno. Različiti geni koji se koriste u oplemenjivanju kukuruza šećerca uslovljavaju drugačiji ugljenohidratni sastav i kvalitet zrna koji se razlikuje od kukuruza standardnog kvaliteta. Dominantan šećer u zrnu šećerca u mlečnoj fazi razvoja endosperma jeste saharoza. Ona daje slatkoću zrnu i određuje kvalitet nezrelog zrna koje se koristi za potrošnju. Veoma je važno da se berba kukuruza šećerca obavi u pravo vreme, kada je sadržaj saharoze maksimalan jer je i kvalitet zrna u to vreme visok. U radu su praćene promene ugljenohidratnog sastava tokom razvoja endosperma pet ZP hibrida kukuruza šećerca. Određivan je sadržaj saharoze glukoze i fruktoze nakon 10, 15, 20, 23, 25 i 28 dana posle oplodnje. Rezultati pokazuju da je maksimalan sadržaj saharoze kod ispitivanih hibrida 23 dana posle oplodnje što znači da je tada pravo vreme za berbu.

abstract = "The highest number of commercial sweet maize hybrids is based on one or more recessive alleles that alter a carbohydrate content of endosperm. Sweet maize is consumed as human food in the milk stage of the endosperm development when the kernel is soft, sweet and succulent. Different genes used in sweet maize breeding stipulate a diverse carbohydrate content and grain quality that differ from standard quality maize. Sucrose is the dominant sugar in sweet maize grain in the milk stage of the endosperm development. It gives gain its sweetness and determines quality of immature grain that is used for consumption. Timely harvest of sweet maize is very important as the maximum sucrose content means very high grain quality. Attention came to focus on changes of the carbohydrate content during the endosperm development of five ZP sweet maize hybrids. The contents of sucrose, glucose and fructose were determined 10, 15, 20, 23, 25 and 28 days after pollination. The obtained results show a maximum sucrose content on the 23rd day after pollination meaning that time is a right time for harvest., Najveći broj komercijalnih hibrida kukuruza šećerca se zasniva na jednom ili više recesivnih alela koji menjaju ugljenohidratni sastav endosperma. Kukuruz šećerac se koristi za ljudsku ishranu u mlečnoj fazi razvoja endosperma, kada je zrno slatko, nežno i sočno. Različiti geni koji se koriste u oplemenjivanju kukuruza šećerca uslovljavaju drugačiji ugljenohidratni sastav i kvalitet zrna koji se razlikuje od kukuruza standardnog kvaliteta. Dominantan šećer u zrnu šećerca u mlečnoj fazi razvoja endosperma jeste saharoza. Ona daje slatkoću zrnu i određuje kvalitet nezrelog zrna koje se koristi za potrošnju. Veoma je važno da se berba kukuruza šećerca obavi u pravo vreme, kada je sadržaj saharoze maksimalan jer je i kvalitet zrna u to vreme visok. U radu su praćene promene ugljenohidratnog sastava tokom razvoja endosperma pet ZP hibrida kukuruza šećerca. Određivan je sadržaj saharoze glukoze i fruktoze nakon 10, 15, 20, 23, 25 i 28 dana posle oplodnje. Rezultati pokazuju da je maksimalan sadržaj saharoze kod ispitivanih hibrida 23 dana posle oplodnje što znači da je tada pravo vreme za berbu.",

AB  - Information about the genetic diversity of inbred lines is essential in planning maize breeding programmes. Utilization of diverse parents in the process of hybridization has the greatest influence on producing high yielding hybrids. The aim of this research was to determine genetic diversity of ten maize inbred lines of different origin on the basis of protein and RAPD markers and to compare these results with pedigree and grain yield heterosis data. Results of genetic distances, based on protein and RAPD markers were similar and in concurrence with the date on the origin of inbreds. Usefulness of protein and RAPD markers for assigning inbreds to heterotic groups was examined by the cluster analysis. Cluster analysis based on protein markers, RAPD and heterosis showed clear grouping of lines into two main heterotic groups. Only few deviations were noticed, and those among inbreds not belonging to those heterotic groups. According to the observed results it could be concluded that grouping of inbred lines based on molecular markers, generally agrees with their pedigrees and that clusters are representatives of heterotic groups. Very high and highly significant estimate of rank correlation coefficient between RAPD and heterosis (0,876**) also confirmed that.
AB  - Stvaranje visokoprinosnih hibrida kukuruza u direktnoj je zavisnosti od genetičke udaljenosti roditeljskih komponenti, te je za proces selekcije neophodno poznavanje genetičke divergentnosti samooplodnih linija kukuruza. Cilj ovog rada bio je da se utvrdi genetička divergentnost 10 samooplodnih linija kukuruza različitog porekla na osnovu proteinskih i RAPD markera i da se ti podaci uporede sa podacima o heterozisu i njihovim poreklom. Izračunata genetička distanca na osnovu proteinskih i RAPD markera pokazala je podudarne rezultate, koji su takođe bili saglasnosti sa podacima o poreklu tih linija. Klasterima na osnovu heterozisa, proteinskih i RAPD markera, linije su grupisane u dve osnovne heterotične grupe. Primećeno je nekoliko odstupanja i to kod linija koje po poreklu nisu pripadale tim heterotičnim grupama. Na osnovu ovoga može se zaključiti da je karakterizacija linija putem podataka dobijenih molekularnim markerima uglavnom u saglasnosti sa podacima o njihovom poreklu i da se na osnovu klastera može dobiti jasna i precizna slika o njihovom klasifikovanju u odgovarajuće heterotične grupe. Ovo je potvrđeno i vrednostima koeficijenta korelacije ranga koji su bili visoko značajni između oba metoda markera i heterozisa, a naročito između RAPD i heterozisa (0,876**).

Effects of environmental factors on grain yield and grain quality of popping maize hybrids (Zea mays L. everta)

AB  - The main difference between popping maize hybrids and standard grain quality hybrids is the ability of the former to expand in fine flakes while being heated up. Therefore, not only grain yields, but also the quality of the popped grain and especially popping volume, are important for this type of maize. In this paper we explored the environmental effects i.e. locations, on grain yield, popping expansion and the number of grains per 10 g. Twelve ZP popping maize hybrids were sown over three locations by the method of complete random block design. The effect of the genotype-hybrid, and the location were highly significant for all three examined traits, while the hybrid x location interaction was highly significant for grain yield and the number of grains per 10 g. This indicates that grain yield, popping volume and the grain size (which is determined by the number of grains per 10 g) are not determined only by the genetic factors, but also by the environment and the genotype x environment interaction. Estimates of the rank correlation coefficients implied that there was a negative correlation among all three traits (r(gy-pe)= -0.45; r(gy-ng)= -0.46 i r(pe-ng)= - 0.29). Although these estimates were not statistically significant, they indicated that it was not easy to make high yielding and good quality popping maize hybrids.
AB  - Kukuruz kokičar se razlikuje od kukurza standardnog tipa zrna po tome što se prilikom zagrevanja njegovo zrno rasprskava u finu kokicu ili pahuljicu. Zbog toga je za ovaj tip kukuruza pored prinosa, kao glavne osobine, bitan i kvalitet iskokanog zrna, naročito njegova zapremina. U ovom radu ispitivan je uticaj faktora spoljne sredine - lokacije, na prinos, zapreminu kokičavosti i broj zrna u 10 g. Posejano je 12 ZP hibrida kukuruza kokičara na tri lokacije po metodu slučajnog blok sistema. Uticaj genotipa- hibrida i lokacije bio je visoko značajan za sve tri posmatrane osobine, dok je interakcija genotip x lokacija bio visoko značajan za prinos i broj zrna u 10 g. Ovo ukazuje na činjenicu da je prinos zrna kukuruza kokičara, zapremina kokica, kao i krupnoća zrna na koju ukazuje broj zrna u 10 g, pod uticajem ne samo genetičkih faktora, već i pod velikim uticajem faktora sredine. Spearmanovim koeficijenatom korelacije ranga utvrđene su negativne korelacije između prinosa i zapremine kokičavosti r(p-z)= -0,45, prinosa i krupnoće zrna r(p-bz)= -0,46 i zapremine kokičavosti i krupnoće zrna r(z-bz)= -0,29. Negativna korelacija između prinosa i zapremine kokičavosti, ukazuje na to da prinosniji hibridi daju zrno slabije kokičavosti. Iako ova vrednost nije bila statistički značajna, njihova vrednost, naročito između prinosa i zapremine kokičavosti, ukazuje na to da je veoma teško stvoriti hibride kukuruza kokičara visokog prinosa i dobre zapremine kokičavosti.

AB  - The modern ZP maize hybrids breeding at the Maize Research Institute, Zemun Polje, begun during the fifties of the 20(th) century. Collecting of the initial material was the first step in conducting maize breeding programs. The maize inbred line-developing programs from three local populations has initiated in 1953. That was beginning of breeding first cycles ZP maize hybrids. From that period up to present time, we have had five generations of ZP maize hybrids. Each generation has characterized by introduction of the new potentially higher yielding hybrids and with better other agronomics characteristics. According to results from different studies, the genetic yield potential of ZP maize hybrids over the last 40 years amounted to 100 kg.ha(-1) per year. ZP 755 was the first registered maize hybrid in the country in 1964. Total 499 ZP maize hybrids have released by the State Government Commission's since 1964 and 99 ZP maize hybrids have registered in 15 countries. Since the seventies biotechnology methods have been applied in the breeding programs. The main part of biotechnology work is based on the molecular marker application for determining genetic diversity, QTL mapping for drought tolerance and identification of chromosome regions harbouring QTLs for economically important traits (yield, kernel oil content).
