AB - Maize (Zea mays L.) is an important cereal crop of the world and plays a key role in
worldwide agriculture with highest production and productivity. Maize is also an important
grain crop grown in Serbia, used as a component of feed. Many studies have been conducted
on correlations, heritability and path analysis on grain yield. The results have been widely
used in maize breeding programs. The present research was carried out at the Maize Research
Institute “Zemun Polje” in Serbia during the 2021 growing season effects of grain yield and
quantitative traits of maize. Six inbred lines were crossed according to complete diallel
method. In this way fifteen hybrids and fifteen reciprocal combinations were obtained. The
hybrids and reciprocal combinations derived from these parental components were used in
this paper. The objective of study was to estimate direct and indirect effects of five
morphological traits on grain yield by the application of the simple coefficient correlation,
heritability and path coefficient analysis. 1000-kernel weight with the value of 0.365 had the
strongest direct positive effect on grain yield. Positive direct effects on grain yield were also
observed for ear length (0.202), ear diameter (0.248) and number of rows per ear (0.076),
while negative direct effects were observed for cob diameter (-0.057). Thousand-kernel
weight had the highest indirect positive effect on grain yield via ear diameter (0.232). Cob
diameter had highest negative indirect effect on grain yield via ear diameter (-0.048). The
coefficient of multiple determination (R2y12345) had a value of 0.428.

AB - The history of maize breeding in Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje has
been going on for more than seven decades. Maize breeders in the Institute
create their breeding programs in such way to respond to actual market
demands and modern trends in maize cultivation but also by using available
new technologies that accelerate and increase the efficiency of maize hybrid
development. One of the tools that makes this possible is double haploid (DH)
breeding technology, which has been applied in the Maize Institute since 2014.
Breeding programs with the use of DH are realized by the use of inducers with
high induction rate, additional winter generations and the development of a
reliable system (markers) induced haploid recognition. In this way, ZP 4019
was created at the Institute Zemun Polje as the first official maize hybrid with
a parental inbred line obtained by DH technology. This is a modern maize
hybrid intended to respond to the changes in maize cultivation in recent years
caused by increasingly frequent periods of draught, unfavorable precipitations
and temperatures in the flowering and grain filling stages, as well as demands
for higher yields and easy grain harvesting without the need for grain drying.
ZP 4019 plant habitus is characterized by a low stem, a well-developed root
system, a significant leaf area, erect position of the upper leaves and a lower
planted ear which enables growing in higher densities. In testing on different
agroecological environments, this hybrid showed high adaptability and
stability. ZP 4019 was tested in official test trials of the Section for plant variety
registration during 2021 and 2022 and performed significantly better than
check hybrids NK PAKO and ZEROS, while its grain moisture content was
below the official threshold for the FAO 400 maturity group.

AB - Maize breeding in Maize research institute “Zemun Polje” was conducted for more than 75 years resulting in the creations of numerous maize hybrids with superior traits and performance. The source breeding material used in the breeding programs was very diverse and varied from the domestic landraces to the introduced inbred lines. This resulted in a very diverse and complex structure of the breeding pools used in commercial maize breeding in “Zemun Polje” Institute. As genetic material in this study, 24 maize inbred lines of different origin, heterotic and maturity goups were selected were selected from the 3rd and 4th cycle of breeding in Maize research institute “Zemun Polje”. These are inbreds that were commonly used in breeding programs during the 1980s and were parental components of most important commercial maize hybrids. The genotyping was performed using a Maize 25k Infinium array. The neighbor-joining cladogram, PcoA and Structure were used to analyze the genetic structure and diversity of the panel. Population structure analysis of the panel initially showed a clear divide between Lancaster and Non-Lancaster inbred lines, revealing the dominant heterotic pattern in the breeding program. Further analysis with an increased number of population (k) showed a more complex structure of the non-Lancaster group of inbred lines with best number of ancestral population being k=5. The average genetic distance in the panel was 0,385, ranging from 0,039 to 0,544, with paternal inbreds in most of commercial hybrids being the most distant ones. The genotyping results of the Zemun Polje maize panel were further merged with DROPS European panel of 247 dent maize inbred lines in order to view the results of the diversity analysis of the Zemun Polje panel from a broader perspective.

AB - Reciprocal effect in maize refers to the phenotypic difference between reciprocal F1 hybrids.
The aim of this study was to estimate influence of reciprocal crosses on grain yield and eight
yield components. Five single-cross hybrids, their reciprocal crosses and six parental inbred
lines were selected and all hybrids belong to late maturity group (FAO 500-600) with Lancaster
ZPL-7 line as mutual parent. The experiment was set up in two replications using a completelyrandomized block design in 2016 and 2017, at a total of seven environments. Reciprocal effect
significantly influenced only grain yield and ear length, while factors hybrid and location were
significant for all the examined traits. All hybrids individually displayed significant reciprocal
effect for grain yield, ear length, number of kernels per row and 100 kernel weight, two hybrids
for kernel length and thickness, while three hybrids showed reciprocal effect on kernel width.
The effects were both positive and negative depending on the genotype itself. Furthermore,
there were no significant differences for ear row number and ear width between normal and
reciprocal variants. The highest difference for grain yield was between ZP 606 reciprocal
(12.06 t/ha) and ZP 606 normal (11.28 t/ha). Pearson correlations were calculated between
examined traits. All correlations between grain yield and other yield components were found
significant and positive, except for the number of rows per ear (no correlation) and kernel width
(negative correlation). Reciprocal effect has strong influence on the measured yield traits, but
it is genotype specific. Therefore, in the future we should examine normal and reciprocal
variants of all commercial maize hybrids.

AB - Stability of yield or of any other trait depends on the ability of a given cultivar to response to
changes in the environment, which is also referred to as phenotypic plasticity. The analysis of a
genotype × location interaction is necessary to obtain information on the stable performance of
genotypes. This paper presents results of the genotype (G) main effect and the genotype by
environment (GE) interaction, genotype plus genotype by environment interaction (G × GE)
biplot analysis of a multi-environmental trial with eight maize hybrids of the FAO maturity
group 600 and six different locations in Serbia conducted in 2018. The objective was to
determine the effects of genotypes, six environments and their interactions on grain yield and to
identify stable maize genotypes. The trial was set up in a randomised complete block design with
three replications in each environment. The combined ANOVA indicated that the main effects of
environments, genotypes and the genotype by environment interaction were highly significant.
The G × GE effects were further partitioned using a GGE biplot model. In the FAO maturity
group 600, the first mega-environment contained environments E6 (Požarevac), E5 (Pančevo)
and E2 (Bečej) with a check G7 (ZP EXP1) producing the highest yield. The mega-environment
contained environments E4 (Sremska Mitrovica) and E1 (Zemun Polje) with the most yielding
hybrid ZPSC 606. Genotypes G8 (ZP EXP2) and G7 (ZP 707) are considered to be the “ideal”
genotype in terms of performance and stability.

AB - The grain yield and its components of eighteen experimental, one registered and two
commercial maize hybrids were examined in six different environments. The main objectives
were to identify the best performing experimental and registered hybrids and to select
appropriate hybrids for approving and commercialization. Based on the results, many decisions
are made. Experimental hybrid Exp.15 is submitted for testing to the Variety Commission of
the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of the Republic of Serbia. This
hybrid, as a high-yielding and a stable one, could enrich the assortment of registered mediumlate maize hybrids in Serbia. First year of its testing for the purpose of being registered is going
to be 2020. Further, registered hybrid ZP 685 is suggested for commercialization as one of the
best performing in present study. In addition, the goal of this study was also identification of
the superior inbred lines for use in future breeding programs. Inbred lines L1 (BSSS) and L4
(Independent heterotic group) are chosen for crossing with an aim to create a new origin
population - source for deriving new recombinant inbred lines. Cross L1 x L4 will be a part of
maize breeding program at Maize Research Institute “Zemun Polje” in 2020. Lines L1 and L4
are also suggested for crossing with all others Lancaster lines from MRIZP (which are not
parental components of tested hybrids) for deriving new experimental F1 hybrids. As well,
Lancaster lines L5, L6 and L7 should be crossed between themselves for creating new origin
populations for deriving new recombinant Lancaster inbred lines. Hybrid Sister 1 had very high
and stable grain yield and as such it is the most cost effective for seed production.

AB - Genetic distance among six elite maize inbred lines was analyzed using SSR markers. Hybrid progeny obtained by crossing inbred lines according an incomplete diallel design was tested in field trials together with inbred lines per se.The objective of this study was to determine genetic distance of inbred maize lines and to examine if a significant correlation exist between the genetic distance of parental lines and the exhibited high parent heterosis (HPH) and specific combining abilities (SCA) for grain yield, ear lenght, kernel row numberand number of kernels per row. Twenty one SSR primers were used for genetic assesment of inbreds with detected 92 alleles. Genetically most distant lines were ZPL1 and ZPL5 and ZPL6 with the GD value of 0.549, while the closest one were ZPL2 and ZPL3 with GD value of 0.11. The dendrogram distinguished two main groups of inbreds: ZPL5 and ZPL6 grouped in a smaller cluster and ZPL1, ZPL2, ZPL3 and ZPL4 forming the second cluster. Values of the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient between genetic distance among inbred lines based on SSR markers and SCA for all analyzed traits were positive and significant with the exception of rows per ear. Highest correlation was exhibited between the genetic distance and SCA for number of kernels per row (0.643). Spearman's rank correlation coefficient between GD and high parent heterosis was positive and significant for ear length and kernel number in row with coefficient values of 0.554 and 0.611, respectively.
