AB - Plant genetic resources of any country represent its natural wealth. Gene Bank
of the Maize Research Institute "Zemun Polje" with over 5,000 samples
represents national guardian of such. Local maize populations, tributing to their
diversity, represent a key source of desirable traits for breeding programs, such
as nutritional values for protein, starch and lipids. Today’s corn hybrids are
based on a narrow genetic base, where in race for yield, often insufficient
attention is paid to the nutritional composition of the hybrids themselves.
Correct selection of material from the Gene Bank can only be achieved with
pre-breeding selection. Such prebreeding would cover wide material and
should detect and reduce it to a desirable and more acceptable volume that can
further be introduced into commercial breeding programs. This paper covered
analysis of protein, starch and lipid content in grain of 31 local maize
populations, crossed with two commercial testers ZPL-217 (BSSS) and ZPL-
255/75-5 (Lancaster Sure Crop) with line x tester method used for combinig
ability calculation. According to the results the best combiner for higher lipid
content is A3 landrace with a GCA value of 0.33*, for protein content landraces
A9 and A 38 with GCA values of 0.51* and 0.57*, respectively, were found.
As for populations A 17 and A 37 with the GCA values of 1.52* and 1.36*,
respectively, they proved to be the best combiners for starch. Mentioned
populations showed significant GCA values with a probability level of 0.05,
showing their possible significance in further breeding application.

AB - With global climate change including unpredictable geographic and temporal weather
patterns that lead to significant genotype × environment interaction (GEI) the maize
performance assessment would need to be complemented with stability analysis. The
objectives of this study were: i) estimation of parametric and non-parametric stability
indices for grain yield of late maturity maize hybrids, ii) assessing correlations and
grouping of stability indices for grain yield of late maturity maize hybrids. The eight
maize hybrids of FAO 700 maturity group (ZP1-ZP7, and check Ch) were evaluated for
grain yield in the multi-environment trial including five locations in Serbia during 2020.
and 2021. year. Stability analyses included twenty parametric and non-parametric indices,
Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Pearson’s correlations between stability
indices. The sum of ranks for tested late maturity maize hybrids were in the interval from
37 (ZP6) to 146 (ZP4). The average rank was in the range from 1.8 (ZP6) to 7.3 (ZP4).
The interval of variation for standard deviation of average ranks for tested maize hybrids
was from 1.3 (ZP4, Ch) to 2 (ZP2) indicating satisfying accordance of utilized parametric
and non-parametric stability measures. The highest average grain yield across all tested
environments was observed for ZP1, which was second most stable hybrid. The most
stable late maturity maize hybrid tested over ten environments was proven to be ZP6 with
sum of ranks and average rank of 37 and 1.8, respectively, with standard deviation of
average rank 1.5. PCA biplot showed two groups of parametric and non-parametric stability estimates: I group-coefficient of variation (CVi), Eberhart and Russel’s regression coefficient (bi), Perkins and Jinks’s regression coefficient (Bi), GEI variance component (θ(i)), coefficient of determination ( ); II group-Eberhart and Russel’s deviation from regression , Wricke’s ecovalence Shukla’s stability variance Perkins and Jink’s deviation from regression , superiority measure the mean of the absolute rank differences of a genotype over all tested environments the variance among the genotype ranks over all tested environments (the sum of the absolute deviations for each genotype relative to the mean of ranks , the sum of squares of rank for each genotype relative to the mean of ranks - Thennarasu non-parametric stability estimates, mean variance component (θi), Kang’s rank-sum (KRi). Pearson’s correlation bring along the redundant stability indices and one can choose to use or bi or Bi, or θi, or θi.

AB - Southeast Europe (SEE) is a very important maize-growing region, comparable to the Corn belt region of the United
States, with similar dent germplasm (dent by dent hybrids). Historically, this region has undergone several genetic
material swaps, following the trends in the US, with one of the most signifcant swaps related to US aid programs
after WWII. The imported accessions used to make double-cross hybrids were also mixed with previously adapted
germplasm originating from several more distant OPVs, supporting the transition to single cross-breeding. Many of
these materials were deposited at the Maize Gene Bank of the Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje (MRIZP) between
the 1960s and 1980s. A part of this Gene Bank (572 inbreds) was genotyped with Afymetrix Axiom Maize Genotyping Array with 616,201 polymorphic variants. Data were merged with two other genotyping datasets with mostly
European fint (TUM dataset) and dent (DROPS dataset) germplasm. The fnal pan-European dataset consisted of 974
inbreds and 460,243 markers. Admixture analysis showed seven ancestral populations representing European fint,
B73/B14, Lancaster, B37, Wf9/Oh07, A374, and Iodent pools. Subpanel of inbreds with SEE origin showed a lack of
Iodent germplasm, marking its historical context. Several signatures of selection were identifed at chromosomes 1, 3,
6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. The regions under selection were mined for protein-coding genes and were used for gene ontology (GO) analysis, showing a highly signifcant overrepresentation of genes involved in response to stress. Our results
suggest the accumulation of favorable allelic diversity, especially in the context of changing climate in the genetic
resources of SEE.

6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. The regions under selection were mined for protein-coding genes and were used for gene ontology (GO) analysis, showing a highly signifcant overrepresentation of genes involved in response to stress. Our results
suggest the accumulation of favorable allelic diversity, especially in the context of changing climate in the genetic
resources of SEE.",

AB - During the past seven decades, the Maize Research Institute, Zemun Polje has
been succeeding in keeping up with global trends within the fields of
developing and producing hybrids of various FAO maturity groups (100-700).
Considering the length of the growing season, breeding of such a wide range
of hybrids, has provided marketing of hybrid maize seed all over the world.
Mercantile corn production in Serbia increasingly involves the participation of
medium early hybrids FAO 300-400. These hybrids should be characterized as
high and stable yields with a quick release of moisture from the kernels. The
intensification of agricultural production, higher inputs, harvesting corn
directly by shelling in grain, high temperatures accompanied by dry winds and
lack of rainfall during the growing period are among the most important causes
for the growing medium early hybrids. Medium early hybrids have a smaller
plant which enables them growing in higher densities that is, larger number of
plants per unit area. Also, due to the shorter growing season, these hybrids go
through a period of grain filling in terms of better soil moisture supply. In the
Maize Research Institute, Zemun Polje in recent times, the development of
medium early maturity hybrids has been performed, and the hybrid ZP 4242
(FAO 400) is a result of such development. This hybrid was tested in trails of
the Commission for the Variety Releasing in 2020 and 2021. During the
investigation period, yields of the hybrid ZP 4242 were significantly higher
than yields of check hybrids NK PAKO and ZEROS. ZP 4242 had a moisture
level content on the level of check hybrids. Because of its adaptability, yield
stability and good level of drought tolerance new ZP hybrid has good potential
for production in different agro-ecological environments.

AB - Maize breeding in Maize research institute “Zemun Polje” was conducted for more than 75 years resulting in the creations of numerous maize hybrids with superior traits and performance. The source breeding material used in the breeding programs was very diverse and varied from the domestic landraces to the introduced inbred lines. This resulted in a very diverse and complex structure of the breeding pools used in commercial maize breeding in “Zemun Polje” Institute. As genetic material in this study, 24 maize inbred lines of different origin, heterotic and maturity goups were selected were selected from the 3rd and 4th cycle of breeding in Maize research institute “Zemun Polje”. These are inbreds that were commonly used in breeding programs during the 1980s and were parental components of most important commercial maize hybrids. The genotyping was performed using a Maize 25k Infinium array. The neighbor-joining cladogram, PcoA and Structure were used to analyze the genetic structure and diversity of the panel. Population structure analysis of the panel initially showed a clear divide between Lancaster and Non-Lancaster inbred lines, revealing the dominant heterotic pattern in the breeding program. Further analysis with an increased number of population (k) showed a more complex structure of the non-Lancaster group of inbred lines with best number of ancestral population being k=5. The average genetic distance in the panel was 0,385, ranging from 0,039 to 0,544, with paternal inbreds in most of commercial hybrids being the most distant ones. The genotyping results of the Zemun Polje maize panel were further merged with DROPS European panel of 247 dent maize inbred lines in order to view the results of the diversity analysis of the Zemun Polje panel from a broader perspective.

AB - Popcorn is a type of specialty maize and plays important role in the history and the spread of
this species. This type of maize historicaly received little atention in genetic diversity studies
while the fact is that information on genetic variability and population structure is of crucial
importance for improvement of breeding programs. The genetic variation of popcorn maize
was mainly analysed using SSR markers, but there are not many studies applying high-density
SNP markers with lower genotyping errors. The aim of this study was the assesment of genetic
diversity and population structure of popcorn germplasm which represents the genetic
resources currently used in breeding programs in Maize Research Institute „Zemun Polje“.
Molecular characterization of 44 popcorn genotypes was done using 25k SNP Illumina Infinum
Array for maize. After quality control filtering, 12335 SNPs were selected for downstream
analyses. Genetic distance detected ranged from 0.001 to 0.51 with an average of 0.33. The
majority of genetic distances (70.6%) fell between 0.30 and 0.51 revealing significant genetic
variability in a set of maize genotypes under study. SNP markes were moderatly informative
with an average PIC value of 0.26. Also, for more than 50% of SNPs, PIC value was greater
than 0.30. The average observed heterozygosity was 0.04 ranging from 0 to 0.11. The
clustering, principal component and model-based STRUCTURE analyses showed similar
grouping of popcorn lines, generally in accordance with their genetic background. The results
of this research gave valuable information for initiation of future breeding strategies.

AB - Doubled haploid (DH) technology is one of the several technological advances greatly impacting modern maize breeding. The main benefit for breeders is the development of parental inbred lines in one year comparing to four using conventional breeding. Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje (MRIZP) initiated doubled haploid program in maize in 2014. In six years up to 8.000 DH lines have been developed from close to 160 donor germplasm sources of different genetic backgrounds. During this period the research group engaged in the DH program identified several issues that need to be addressed in order to optimize the method for use in temperate regions including poor agronomic performance of haploid inducing lines, donor germplasm effect on the overall efficiency of DH method in maize breeding and selection strategies for improving test-cross performance of DH lines. To meet the challenges, MRIZP DH research group started a breeding program aiming at developing inducers with high and stable HIR adapted to temperate climate conditions. Two main goals were defined: development of haploid inducers with HIR up to 20% in a completely inducer genetic background, and second, to develop haploid inducers in 75 and 50% inducer genetic background with moderate HIR but better agronomic performance. Also, nine populations were used to assess the suitability of our most elite breeding materials for use as donors with respect to genetic background, specifically heterotic group origin, and give guidance to breeders on donor germplasm selection. Furthermore, we are studying different selection strategies for DH line breeding with respect to donor size and prior cycles of selection, i.e. recombination (none (F1), one (F2), or two selection cycles (F3)). We hope that our still ongoing research will contribute to already extensive knowledge on doubled haploid methodology.

AB - A panel of seven maize inbred lines belonging to Zemun Polje commercial pool were
genotypized using SNPs bead chip. 21 hybrids, developed according to the half dialel
mating design, were tested in the field together with inbred lines per se. The goal of the
study was to determine the genetic distance among seven maize inbred lines and to
establish whether there was a significant correlation between the genetic distance among
parental inbreds and grain yield, specific combining abilities (SCA) and high-parent (HP)
heterosis for the grain yield. The inbred lines ZPL2 and ZPL4 with the genetic distance of
0.487 were the most genetically distant parents, while inbred lines ZPL1 and ZPL2 with
the genetic distance of 0.191 were the closest ones. Three subclusters of inbred lines were
distinguished in the dendrogram. Inbred lines ZPL5, ZPL6, ZPL3 and ZPL7 were
grouped into the first subcluster, while inbred lines ZPL1 and ZPL2, i.e. the inbred line
ZPL4 were grouped in the second, i.e. the third subcluster, respectively. The values of the
Spearman's rank correlation coefficient between the genetic distance among inbred lines
based on the SNP markers, and grain yield, specific combining abilities (SCA) and high-
parent (HP) heterosis were positive and statistically significant. The highest correlation
coefficient was exhibited between the grain yield and high-parent (HP) heterosis (0.93),
and then between the genetic distance and the grain yield (0.92) as well as between the
genetic distance and high-parent (HP) heterosis (0.91).
distancom 0.196. Dendrogram je podelio inbred linije u tri različita subklastera. Prvom
subklasteru pripadaju inbred linije ZPL5, ZPL6, ZPL3 i ZPL7, drugom inbred linije ZPL1 i
ZPL2 i trećem inbred linija ZPL4.
