AB  - Upotreba kukuruza u ishrani ljudi i životinja ima široku primenu jer predstavlja
izvor različitih tohemikalija koje povoljno utiču na metaboličke procese. Tokom
vegetacije biljka kukuruza izložena je različitim uticajima abiotičkog i biotičkog
stresa. Napad jedne od najznačajnijih štetočina kukuruza, larve Ostrinia nubilalis
zavisi od uslova sredine i može dovesti do smenjenja prinosa i do 30%. Oštećenja
nadzemnih delova biljke povećavaju rizik od pojave truleži klipa, jer predstavljaju
mesta

sekundarne infekcije izazvane različitim patogenim gljivama. Jedna
od neophodnih agrotehničkih mera je primena pesticida u poljoprivredi u cilju
suzbijanju kako štetočina tako i korova, obezbeđujući stabilan prinosa. S druge
strane, primena pesticida, nepovoljni uslovi spoljašnje sredine i biotički stres mogu
dovesti do oksidativnog stresa, oštećenja ćelija i pojave slobodnih radikala i reaktivnih
vrsta
kiseonika
(engl.
reactive
oxygen
species
-
ROS).
Ćelije
i
tkiva

imaju
razvijene
antioksidativne
sisteme
odbrane
koji
ihibiraju
ili
vezuju
slobodne

Najznačajniji neenzimski antioksidansi su avonoidi, fenolne kiseline,
karotenoidi, tokoferoli, tinska kiselina, vitamin C, i glutation. Osim promena u 
prinosu i antioksidativnom statusu, kod biljke može doći i do promena u količini
i drugih tohemikalija kao što su proteini, šećeri, amnokiseline i masne kiseline.
Do sada su nedovljno ispitani uticaji pesticida i abiotički stres koji mogu da izazovu
promene
na
različitim
tkivima
kukuruza,
pri
čemu
je
više
pažnje
posvećano

promeni
tohemikalija

izazvanoj uticajem spoljašnje sredine kao što je vodni
decit. U cilju pronalaženja karakterističnog odgovora genotipa, u odnosu na
promene tohemijskog sadržaja, kao i eventualno izdvajanje genotipa tolerantnog
na potencijalni stres primenjuju su metode spekrofotometrije i savremene metode
tečne i gasne hromatograje za odredjivanje tohemikalija u biljci.

the
maize
plant
is
exposed

various
influences

of
abiotic

biotic
stress.
Ostrinia
nubilalis
larvae,
one
of
the
predominant
maize

pests,
can
reduce
plant
growth
and
cause
stalk
and
ear
damage,
leading
to
a
yield

decrease
of
up
to
30%.
Damage
to
the
above-ground
parts
of

plant
increases

the
risk
of
cob
rot,
presenting
sites
of
secondary
infection
caused
by
pathogenic

fungi.
One
of
the
necessary
agrotechnical
strategies
is
the
application
of
pesticides

in
order

to control both pest and weed impact, providing stability of yield. On
the other hand, the application of pesticides, negative environmental impacts,
and biotic stress can lead to oxidative stress, cell damage and the appearance of
free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Cells and plant tissues have developed
antioxidant
defense
systems
that
inhibit
or
bind
free
radicals.
The
most

important
non-enzymatic
antioxidants
are
flavonoids,
phenolic
acids,
carotenoids,

tocopherols,

phytic acid, vitamin C, and glutathione. In addition to changes in 
yield and antioxidant status, alteration of other phytochemicals such as proteins,
sugars, amino acids and fatty acids can also occur in the plant. The effects of pesticides
and
abiotic
stress
that
they
can
cause
on
different
tissues
of

maize have
been insufficiently investigated. More attention has been given to the changes in
phytochemicals content caused by the influence of the environment such as water
deficit. In order to find the response of the genotype, in relation to changes in the
phytochemical content, as well as the eventual selection of a genotype tolerant
to potential stress, spectrophotometry methods and modern methods of liquid
and gas chromatography were applied to determine phytochemicals in the plant.

Genetic variability of maize grain antioxidant compounds

AB  - Due to its natural diversity maize is one of the most heterogeneous cereals in
terms of biochemical composition. Maize grain contains antioxidant
compounds, associated with nutraceutical properties and health promotion
benefits. Therefore, such grain is considered to be a functional food and
features high antioxidant activities and preventive functions against cancer,
diabetes, obesity and neurodegenerative disorders. The purpose of this research
was to screen a set of six maize lines from MRI gene bank and a set of 10 ZP
commercial lines for phenolic acids, tocopherols and carotenoids content by
HPLC. Ranges of phenolic acids were as follows: gallic 2.86-26.99 μg/g,
protocatechuic 2.21-75.92 μg/g, vanillic 1.10-10.34 μg/g, caffeic 0.65-8.77
μg/g, syringic 0.57-12.74 μg/g, sinapic 0.11-4.50 μg/g, p‐coumaric 0.23-1.58
μg/g, ferulic 0.71-4.61 μg/g, and cinnamic acid 0.87-45.61 μg/g. Significant
variations for all analyzed components between genotypes were observed. The
highest coefficient of variation is estimated for β carotene and sinapic acid.
Maize lines from gene bank collection had highest average content of gallic
acid, δ-tocopherol, γ+β-tocopherol, α-tocopherol, and β carotene. ZP
commercial lines had higher average value for protocatechuic, vanillic, caffeic,
syringic, sinapic, p‐coumaric, ferulic, cinnamic acid and lutein + zeaxanthin.
Line ZPL6 had the highest content of phenolic acids and β carotene among the
lines from the gene bank; line ZPL14 and ZPL16 had the highest value of
vanillic, p‐coumaric, ferulic acid, γ + β-tocopherol and lutein + zeaxanthin.
PCA for all analyzed antioxidant compounds clearly separated inbred lines
from MRI gene bank from ZP commercial lines. This study provides baseline
information on the nutritional value of analyzed maize lines which can be used
for future breeding works and enhance germplasm utilization focused on the
improved nutritional and functional properties of maize.

AB  - Plants reconfigure their metabolic pathways to cope with water deficit. The aim of this study was to determine the status of the physiological parameters and the content of phenolic acids in the upper most ear leaf of maize inbred lines contrasting in drought tolerance in terms of improved plant productivity e.g., increased grain yield. The experiment was conducted under irrigation and rain-fed conditions. In drought-tolerant lines, the effect of water deficit was reflected through a chlorophyll and nitrogen balance index increase followed by a flavonols index decrease. The opposite trend was noticed in drought susceptible inbreds, with the exception of the anthocyanins index. Moreover, in comparison to irrigation treatment, opposite trends in the correlations between grain yield and physiological parameters found under water deficit conditions indicated the activation of different metabolic pathways in defense against water deficit stress. Concerning phenolic acid content, water deficit caused the reduction of protocatechuic, caffeic, and sinapic acid in all inbreds evaluated. However, the highly pronounced increase of ferulic and especially cinnamic acid content under water deficit conditions indicated possible crucial role of these secondary metabolites in preventing the harmful effects of water deficit stress, which, in turn, might be useful in maize breeding selection for drought tolerance

AB  - A soil tillage system adjusted to the soil type and agro-ecological conditions, togetherwith the optimal nutrient supply, is a prerequisite for high maize (Zea mays L.) yield. However,there is little knowledge about the influence of soil tillage and nitrogen (N) rates on maize grainquality. A study was initiated in 1978 in Zemun Polje, Belgrade, Serbia, on the chernozem soil type.The effects of three N rates—0, 180 and 240 kg N ha−1—within three tillage practices—no-tillage,reduced and conventional tillage—and their influence on grain yield (GY) and the content of proteins,starch, oil, total tocopherols and carotenoids, phytic phosphorus (Phy), glutathione (GSH), phenolsand inorganic P (Pi) in maize grain were analysed in the period 2016–2018. Differences in maizeGY were 2.57 and 3.01 t ha−1for reduced- or no-tillage, respectively, in comparison to conventionaltillage. Conventional tillage and higher N rates contributed to the increase in maize yield and thegrain nutritional quality with regard to the increased level of proteins, GSH and Phy. On the otherhand reduced inputs were beneficial only for grain quality, in relation to the increase in tocopherolsand phenols.

Standard  ZP341  hybrid  was  superior  for  half  of  agronomic  traits  tested, especially  grain  yield,  which  was  higher  from  24%  to  six  times.  Ten  accessions  had protein  content  over  14  %  and  were  further  analyzed  for  amino  acid  composition  and kernel  characteristics.  Additionally,  genetic  relationships  between  the  accessions  were determined   by   Simple   Sequence   Repeats   (SSRs)   analysis   with   30   primers.   All accessions  showed  elevated  contents  of  most  essential  amino  acids.  Population  L492 with  1.87  and  0.68  g  100g-1dry  weight  had  the  highest  contents  of  leucine  and phenylalanine, respectively, but also higher contents of most other analyzed amino acids (p<0.05). Cluster analysis based on SSRs also distinguished L492 by separating it from all other accessions. Compared to ZP341, accessions were significantly inferior in grain weight  and  dimensions  (p<0.05),  but  superior  in  most  hardness  parameters  (p<0.05). Pearson  correlations  revealed  lack  of  negative  correlations  between  biochemical  traits, indicating  a  possibility  for  concurrent  improvement  of  several  amino  acids.  The  best way  of  improving  protein  quality  of  elite  materials  is  through  backcrossing  and  as populations  were  chosen  according  to  their  good  general  combining  ability  (with IoDent,  Lancaster  and  BSSS),  they  could  serve  for  improvement  of  elite  materials  of these genetic origins.

Cilj ovog  rada  jebio da se analiziraju agronomske osobine, sadržaj proteina i amino kiselina kao i fiziĉka  svojstva  zrna  16  uzoraka  iz  banke  gena  koji  ĉine  mini coreza  kvalitet,  da  bi  se identifikovale populacije za poboljšanje kvaliteta proteina kukuruza. Hibrid ZP 341 (standard) je bio superioran za većinu testiranih agronomskih svojstava, sa prinosom zrna većim za 24% do 600%. Deset uzoraka kod kojih je sadržaj proteina bio veći od 14% je analizirano na sadržaj aminokiselina i karakteristike zrna. TakoĊe su utvrĊeni genetiĉki odnosi izmeĊu uzoraka pomoću 30  SSR  markera.  Svi  uzorci  su  pokazali  povećan  sadržaj  većine  esencijalnih  amino  kiselina. Populacija L492 je imala najveći sadržaj leucina (1.87g 100g-1suve  mase)  i  fenilalanina  (0.68g 100g-1suve  mase),  ali  i  veće  sadržaje  ostalih  aminokiselina  (p<0.05)  u  odnosu  na  ZP341  i analizirane  populacije.  Klaster  analiza  zasnovana  na  SSR  markerima  je  takoĊe  izdvojila populaciju  L492  od  svih  ostalih  populacija.  U  odnosu  na  ZP  341,  populacije  iz  banke  gena  su bile  inferiorne  u  masi  i  dimenzijama  zrna  (p<0.05), ali superiorne u većini parametara tvrdoće zrna   (p<0.05).  Pirsonove   korelacije  su  pokazale  nedostatak  negativnih  korelacija  izmeĊu analiziranih  biohemijskih  svojstava,  što  ukazuje  na  mogućnost  poboljšanja  kukuruza  na  više amino kiselina istovremeno. Najbolji naĉin poboljšanja kvaliteta proteina elitnog materijala je putem   povratnih  ukrštanja,  a  kako  su  populacije  izabrane  prema  svojim  dobrim  opštim kombinacionim sposobnostima (sa IoDent, Lancaster i BSSS), mogle bi da služe za poboljšanje elitnog materijala navedenih heterotiĉnih grupa.

AB  - Intensive weed management is required to meet the growing demands of sweet maize production. Herbicide application is inevitable in sweet maize production, while foliar fertilizer is commonly used in cropping in order to improve crop yield and quality. The effect of nicosulfuron and mesotrione, with and without foliar fertilizer, on the content of phytochemicals (i.e. carotenoids, tocopherols and free phenolic acids) in the kernels of three sweet maize hybrids was evaluated. Herbicides applied alone mainly improved the nutritive profile of the sweet maize kernel. The application of herbicides in combination with foliar fertilizer showed a high variability in the concentration of carotenoids, tocopherols and free phenolic acids. The significant change in the content of phytochemicals was induced by the applied treatments, but it is also genotype-dependent, which was also confirmed by the Principal Component Analysis.

AB  - Fertilization in maize crop is important measure to achieve high yields and provide 
optimal grain quality, whilst soil tillage impacts the nutrients outtake of by crop. 
Carotenoids, are bioactive substances which vital for the human health, especially
β-carotene which is actually provitamin A. In this study the impact of the reduced 
and conventional soil tillage in combination with N fertilizer applied in two doses 
(F1 - 180 kg N ha-1
and F2 - 240 kg N ha-1
) on carotenoids content in maize grain 
was evaluated during 2016, 2017 and 2018. 50 kg P ha-1
and 50 kg K ha-1 were 
applied in the autumn, while N fertilizer was incorporated in the spring, prior to 
sowing. The concentration of carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin and β-carotene) was 
determined by using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). 
Meteorological conditions in 2016 and 2018 were favorable for maize growing, 
while a 2017 was a year with drought present. A higher maize yield in both soil 
tillage regimes was achieved in F2 treatment for all years, except in 2017 where a 
higher maize yield was achieved in conventional tillage in F1 treatment. The 
content of tested carotenoids in conventional tillage regime was higher in the F1 
treatment when compared to F2 treatment for 2016 and 2018, opposite to 2017. 
Similarly, a higher concentration of analyzed carotenoids in reduced tillage regime 
was achieved in F2 treatment for all tested years, in comparison to the F1 
treatment. Obtained results revealed that the concentration of carotenoids in 
conventional tillage was inversely proportional to the maize yield opposite to 
reduced tillage, for all tested years. Results show that the higher content of 
carotenoids in conventional tillage was achieved with a lower dose of N fertilizer, 
contrary to reduced tillage.

AB  - Exogenous application of chemical elicitors to plants can be successfully used to reduce
damage caused by abiotic stresses and consequently to enhance productivity. Different
organic peroxides, applied foliarly as DMSO solution, were used in this study with the
aim to examine variations in grain yield and main nutrient status, i.e. protein, starch and
oil contents, of four maize inbred lines. Results showed that two genotypes reacted
positively on applied treatments, achieving higher grain yields than control group, with
differences up to 2-3 t ha-1. In total, one of the applied peroxides expressed the highest
impact on yield enhance. In terms of nutritive quality, the same treatment mostly
increased the starch content. With regard to protein content, higher value was achieved
by the same genotype which had higher grain yield, and for oil content, variations in
results among treatments were insignificant and irregular. This indicates that synthetic
elicitors, such as organic peroxides, could be used not only to increase grain yield, but
also to modify grain nutritional quality in regard to genotype variability.

AB  - Шећери су важни метаболити и служе као хранљиве материје и регулатори
физиолошких процеса код биљака. Њихова концентрација знатно утиче на раст и
развој биљних органа у различитим фенофазама. У овом истраживању је испитан
утицај пет различитих тетраоксана на семена самооплодне линије кукуруза са
оптималном (> 90%) и ниском (≤ 40%) клијавошћу. Параметри раста (свежа и сува
маса), коефицијент хидролизе - Hy, коефицијент биосинтезе - Bs, заједно са шећерним
профилом корена и изданка, су одређени и упоређени у циљу проналажења
најприкладнијег елицитора. Добијени резултати су показали повећање биомасе корена
и изданка у односу на контролу, са значајним разликама код семена слабије клијавости.
Повећање суве масе корена је, међутим, постигнуто код само два третмана. У складу са
наведеним резултатима, два иста тетраоксана су допринела вишој Bs вредности у
односу на друге. Што се тиче Hy, сви примењени елицитори су утицали на повећање
хидролизе. Сахароза, која је одговорна за диференцијацију и сазревање, била је нижа
код готово свих третираних корена и изданака, док су нивои глукозе и фруктозе
варирали између третмана. Два тетраоксана која су исказала повољнији утицај на Bs
имала су сличан ефекат на ниво глукозе и фруктозе, посебно код семена са умањеном
способношћу клијања, што може бити од великог значаја за даља истраживања и
могућу примену.
AB  - Sugars are important metabolites that serve as nutrients as well as regulators of physiological
processes in plant. Their concentration greatly affects growth and development of source and
sink in different phenophases. In this study, the influence of five different tetraoxanes on
maize inbred line with seeds from lots with optimal (> 90%) and low (≤ 40%) germination
ability was examined. Growth parameters (fresh and dry weight), coefficient of hydrolysis -
Hy, coefficient of biosynthesis - Bs, in addition to sugar profile of shoot and root, were
determined and correlated in order to find out the most favorable elicitor. Obtained results
showed an increase in biomass of root and shoot relative to control, with significant
differences in seed from lot with poorer germination. Increasing of root dry weight however
has obtained only in two treatments. In accordance with these results, the same two
tetraoxanes contributed to higher Bs values, compared to the others. Relative to Hy, all
applied elicitors influenced on increasing trend of hydrolysis. Sucrose, which is responsible
for differentiation and maturation, was lower in almost all treated shoots and roots, while
glucose and fructose levels varied among treatments. Two tetraoxanes which expressed more
favorable influence on Bs had the similar effect on glucose and fructose levels, especially in
seeds lot with lower germination ability, which can be of great importance for further
researches and possible use.

Herbicides impact on content of phenolic compounds in sweet maize

AB  - Worldwide consumption of sweet maize, in the past ten years, is significantly 
increased. Such data indicate that phytochemicals content requires a higher attention in 
addition to yield. Popularizations of phenolic compounds become worldwide trend due to 
their benefits to human health. The usage of herbicides is widely present for weed control 
in sweet maize growing practices. In this study the influence of two herbicides, on the 
content of ferulic and cinnamic acid as well as on the total phenolic compounds (TPC) in 
three sweet maize hybrids during two vegetation seasons was evaluated. Meteorological 
conditions in 2016 were favorable for maize growing, opposite to 2017 which was a 
drier year. The variability of examined phytochemicals after applied herbicides was 
genotype-dependent and also influenced by growing seasons. Interestingly, for hybrids 
ZP355su and ZP553su, a higher content of ferulic acid was found in treatment with 
nicosulfuron in comparison to mesotrione. The same trend was noticed for cinnamic 
acid content in all tested hybrids. Opposite trend was achieved for ferulic acid content 
and TPC in ZP515su. Content of ferulic and cinnamic acid negatively correlated with the 
maize yield, opposite to TPC, for hybrid ZP355su. Positive correlation of TPC and cinnamic 
acid to maize yield was found in hybrid ZP515su emphasizing it as promising hybrid among 
all tested hybrids. Although relatively small number of hybrids was examined, the obtained 
data revealed a new potential of herbicide, i.e. the enrichment of health promoting 
compounds in sweet maize grain.

Variability of maize lines in ability to use nitrogen

AB  - Nitrogen is important macro-nutrient that influences various physiological processes in 
plants. Nevertheless, nitrogen could be loosed from the soil by leaching and evaporation. 
Thus, low nitrogen inputs are required together with strategy to improve its utilization by 
crops. Maize genotypes exhibit various susceptibility to low soil nitrogen. From that reason, 
variability in reaction of 32 maize lines to growing in conditions with optimal (fertilization 
with urea), and with low nitrogen (without fertilization) was examined during 2017 and 2018. 
All other growing measures and fertilization with other elements was applied at the same 
manner on whole experimental plot. 2017 was drier season, with higher average 
temperatures, particularly during anthesis and grain filling period.
High variability among genotypes and seasons was present. The values of maize grain yield and 
1000 grain weight were slightly lower in the field without nitrogen fertilization. Some lines

AB  - Plant response to herbicides is one of the most essential points in corn (Zea mays L.) production, especially in inbred
lines. Weed abundance is higher in corn lines comparing to hybrids. Insufficient herbicide selectivity in lines crop can be
a limiting factor for their application. Weed control today is based on Integrated Weed Management (IWM) approach, i.e.
to use all possible methods and measures for weed control and better crop fitness. In this research, sensitivity of one corn
inbred line (selection based on previous research) was tested to two sulfonylurea herbicides in treatments with and without
foliar fertilizer. Treatments included recommended and double field doses and control (no herbicide), with and without
foliar fertilizer. Herbicides and foliar fertilizer were applied as a mixture. In a 3 yr field experiment, herbicides expressed
different selectivity to the tested line. The line was further tested in controlled conditions for dose-response analyses in order
to determine variations in biomass and biochemical compounds levels. The double dose of foramsulfuron affected fresh
matter significantly (p < 0.05) with 90% decrease, compared to control. An experiment in controlled conditions showed
increased tolerance to herbicides in treatments with foliar fertilizer – according to higher effective doses (ED10, ED50,
and ED90) estimated, indicating higher plant tolerance to herbicides when foliar fertilizer was applied. In corn leaves the
highest herbicide dose and foliar fertilizer induced slight reduction of concentrations of free thiol groups, soluble proteins
and phytic P (to 14.1%, 9.3% and 9.9%, respectively) and increased phenolics concentration (up to 26.7%) compared to
treatment without herbicide application. Obtained results indicate positive effects of foliar fertilizer when it is applied in
mixture with herbicides, and foliar fertilizing should be considered as important strategy in obtaining higher yields.

Prinos zrna je bio najveći na površini sa konvencionalnom obradom zemljišta i primenom azota u najvećoj količini (9,57 t ha-1) kao i sadržaj proteina, karotenoida, fitinskog fosfora, glutationa i fenola dok je sadržaj skroba, ulja, tokoferola i neorganskog fosfora bio veći na površinama sa manje intenzivnom obradom i đubrenjem. .
AB  - The experiment studies the effect of tillage systems and levels of nitrogen fertilization on the amount and quality of grain yield. Hybrid ZP606 is grown on the experimental field of the Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje, during 2016-2018, with the use of a conventional, reduced ( rotovator ) and no - till ( direct drilling ) of soil treatment and 0, 120 and 240 kg N ha-1. In terms of weather conditions, the years of investigation varied in great extent. Grain yield was the largest in the conventional tillage and application of nitrogen in the largest quantity ( 9,57 t ha -1) as well as the content of proteins, carotenoids, phytic phosphorus, glutathione and phenols, while the content of starch, oil, tocopherols, and inorganic P was higher on the surface of less intensive tillage and fertilization.

AB  - Intensive weed management is required to meet the growing demands of sweet maize production. Herbicide application is inevitable in sweet maize production, while foliar fertilizer is commonly used in cropping in order to improve crop yield and quality. The effect of nicosulfuron and mesotrione, with and without foliar fertilizer, on the content of phytochemicals (i.e. carotenoids, tocopherols and free phenolic acids) in the kernels of three sweet maize hybrids was evaluated. AB  - Large amounts of fruit seeds are discarded yearly in different producing industries, which is a waste of a potentially valuable resource as well as a serious disposal problem. Plum is the most important type of commercial fruit in Serbia and seeds could be obtained as a byproduct of alcoholic beverage processing. Their exploitation should be greater and more information about cultivars' kernels and their composition is required. Also, consumers' tendency for “natural foods” arises a need for characterization of genotypes with high phenolic contents which could be used in processed food products. Discarding large amounts of plum seeds is a waste of potentially precious sources of phytochemicals. In order to characterize the phenolic profile of approximately 30 plum cultivars, phenolic acids and flavonoids, as potential antioxidants, were determined by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled with hybrid mass spectrometry, which combines the Linear Trap Quadrupole (LTQ) and OrbiTrap MS/MS mass analyzer together with chemometric analysis. The UHPLC-LTQ OrbiTrap MS technique was proven to be reliable for the unambiguous detection of phenolic acids, their derivatives, and flavonoid aglycones based on their molecular masses and fragmentation pattern. The phenolic acids prevail over the flavonoids, with protocatechuic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, ferulic acid, and chlorogenic acid as the most abundant ones. In addition, catechin was the most abundant flavonoid.

AB  - Nitrogen is important macro-nutrient that influences various physiological processes 
in plants. It is responsible for protein synthesis and their role in plant metabolism. However, 
nitrogen is ambiguous element that is highly metabolisable by soil microorganisms and could 
be loosed from the soil by leaching and evaporation. To prevent this devastation, low nitrogen 
inputs are required. Maize genotypes exhibit various susceptibility to low nitrogen level in 
soil. From that reason, variability in reaction of 30 maize lines to grow in conditions with 
optimal (fertilization with urea), and with low nitrogen (without fertilization) was examined. 
All other growing measures and fertilization with other elements was applied at the same 
manner on whole experimental plot. The values of maize grain yield and 1000 grain weight 
were slightly lower in the field without nitrogen fertilization. It is significant to highlight that 
high variability between maize lines in term of efficacy of yielding was present, with values 
varying up to 152.31%, indicating that some lines under the low nitrogen conditions reached 
even higher grain yields, than in conditions with optimal nitrogen in soil, declaring them as 
genotypes with high nitrogen using efficiency. However, these lines achieved moderate yields 
(in both fields) in comparison with all tested lines. Lines with better nitrogen using efficiency, 
as well as higher grain yields will be introduced into further research, i.e. breeding of maize 
hybrids with better nitrogen usage from soil, even in the conditions with low nitrogen

AB  - Azot je važan makro-nutrijent, koji pored uticaja na život i 
funkcionisanje biljaka, u visokom stepenu utiče i na formiranje 
prinosa. Genotipovi kukuruza ispoljavaju različitu osetljivost na 
gajenje u uslovima niske obezbeđenosti azotom u zemljištu. Stoga je 
ispitivana varijabilnost reakcije 37 linija kukuruza na gajenje u 
uslovima optimalne (đubrenje ureom) i niske obezbeđenosti azotom 
(bez đubrenja). Sve ostale mere gajenja, kao i obezbeđenost ostalim 
elementima, primenjene su isto za celu parcelu. Prinos zrna linija je 
varirao 0,25-4,33 t ha-1
na delu parcele sa optimalnom 
obezbeđenošću azotom i u opsegu 0,24-3,88 t ha-1
na delu parcele 
sa niskom obezbeđenošću azotom. Takođe, masa 1000 semena je 
varirala 32,68-319,63 g na delu parcele sa optimalnom 
obezbeđenošću azotom i 31,36-312,47 g na delu parcele sa niskim 
azotom. Važno je istaći da je postojala visoka varijabilnost između 
linija u pogledu koeficijenta efikasnosti formiranja prinosa, koji je 
varirao 28,00-152,31%, što znači da su pojedine linije i u uslovima 
niske obezbeđenosti azotom uspele da ostvare i veće prinose u 
odnosu na gajenje pod optimalnom obezbeđenošću azotom. 
Međutim, navedene linije nisu imale visoke vrednosti prinosa, već 
naprotiv, njihov prinos je varirao u opsegu 0,27-2,08 t ha-1
na delu
parcele sa niskim azotom, odnosno 0,25-1,52 ha-1
na delu parcele 
sa optimalnom obezbeđenošću azotom. Linije sa boljom efikasnošću 
iskorišćenja azota, kao i većim prinosom će biti uključene u dalja 
istraživanja, odnosno oplemenjivanje hibrida kukuruza koji bolje 
koriste azot iz podloge, čak i u uslovima niske obezbeđenosti.

AB  - Application of natural or synthetic substances could increases maize vigor, particularly of seeds with poor viability. The aim 
of this experiment was to examine the influence of five mixed tetraoxanes (T1–T5) on germination and early growth (seven day old seedlings) of maize inbred line, from the lot with high germination ability (>90%-G1) and low germination ability 
(<50%-G2). After soaking in tetraoxanes solution (10-6 and 10-9 M) for 24h, at room temperature, the seeds were 
germinated under controlled laboratory conditions on filter paper (BP, 20⇔30°C, ISTA Rules). Results show diverse effects 
of applied treatments. The significant increase in germination of 21.3% (10-9 M) for G2, as well as in seedlings roots and 
shoot fresh biomass for both lots, were observed in T1 treatment. The highest increase of seedlings root and shoot dry 
matter (8.79% and 8.08% for G1, as well as 9.52% and 8.99% for G2, respectively) was obtained by T4 treatment. For G1, 
increased seedlings root to shoot ratio for fresh matter, was achieved with T4 (10-9 M), while for G2, T3 brought the highest 
values of the ratio for both fresh and dry matter. For G1, increased seedlings root to shot ratio for dry matter was achieved 
under T4 (10-9 M). All applied treatments increased hydrolysis and biosynthesis. The highest hydrolysis values for G1was 
achieved by T2 (0.1640 g) and for G2 by T1 treatment (0.1187 g). The highest values of biosynthesis were achieved under 
T4 for both G1 and G2 (0.0723 and 0.0426 g, respectively). For G2, interdependence between germination and seedlings 
root and shoot fresh matter, and between hydrolysis and biosynthesis, implied a significant and negative correlation 
between germination rate and root fresh matter. Moreover, significant increase in germination rate for G2 was followed by 
increase in seedlings root and shoot fresh matter, hydrolysis and biosynthesis.

AB  - Germination is one of the most sensitive phases in growth of agricultural 
plants, where optimal conditions in temperature and water accessibility are 
required. Seedlings are particularly sensitive to environmental stressors, 
especially when maize lines are considered. They tend to germinate and grow 
slower, have poorer adaptability to stress and seeds could lose germination 
ability relative fast. Application of natural or synthetic substances could 
increases maize vigor, particularly of seeds with poor viability. It is proven 
that some stimulators positively affect growth, water absorption and 
antioxidative response of plants [1-4]. The aim of experiment was to examine 
the influence of four mixed tetraoxanes on germination and early growth 
(seven-day old seedlings) of maize inbred line with low germination ability 
(<50%).

plants, where optimal conditions in temperature and water accessibility are 
required. Seedlings are particularly sensitive to environmental stressors, 
especially when maize lines are considered. They tend to germinate and grow

ability relative fast. Application of natural or synthetic substances could

AB  - Visoka selektivnost prema herbicidima je jedna od važnijih pitanja u proizvodnji . Gajenje kukuruza bez kompeticijskog udela korova daje velike mogućnosti . Eliminacijom korova iz polja stvaraju se idealni uslovi za biljke . Herbicidi su i dan danas prva solucija za suzbijanje korova . Sa druge strane , linije kukuruza su osetljivije na herbicide u odnosu na hibride . U ovim istraživanjima sedam linija kukuruza je testirano na četiri herbicida na lokalitetu Zemun Polja tokom 2015. i 2016. godine . Herbicidi ( izoksaflutol , izoksaflutol + tienkarbazon - metil , nikosulfuroni foramsulfuron ) su primenjeni u preporučenim i dvostrukim dozama . Reakcija linija kukuruza na herbicide je dva puta ocenjena : u periodu od 2-3 nedelje posle primene herbicida i drugi put 2-3 nedelje posle prve ocene . Na kraju vegetacionog ciklusa izmeren je prinos zrna . Prva grupa herbicida ( izoksaflutol , izoksaflutol + tienkarbazon - metil ) primenjena u dvostrukoj dozi je izazvala blaga i veoma blaga oštećenja listova kod dve linije kukuruza u 2015. godini . U istoj godini , linija L3 je imala nešto jača oštećenja u tretmanu sa izoksaflutolom , za razliku od ostalih linija gde nisu zabeležena oštećenja . U 2016. godini nisu zabeležena oštećenja linija od ove grupe herbicida . Druga grupa herbicida ( nikosulfuron , foramsulfuron ) primenjeni u obe doze uticali su na ispoljavanje blagih simptoma kod linija L3 i L4 u 2015. godini , sa nešto jačim oštećenjima u drugoj oceni . U drugoj godini samo u tretmanu sa foramsulfuronom su zabeležena značajna oštećenja linije L3 u obe ocene . Primenjeni herbicidi nisu značajno uticali na prinos zrna u 2015. , za razliku od 2016. kada je u pojedinim tretmanima prinos zrna bio značajno niži od kontrole . Dobijeni rezultati ukazuju na visoku tolerantnost ispitivanih linija na primenjene herbicide .

Furthermore , excluding weeds from fields creates optimal environment for plant growing . Herbicides are worldwide the first tool in weed management systems . On the other hand , maize lines are , in general , more sensitive to herbicides than hybrids . In this experiment seven maize inbred lines were tested to four herbicides at Zemun Polje in 2015 and 2016. Herbicides ( isoxaflutole , isoxaflutole + thiencarbazone - methil , nicosulfuron and foramsulfuron ) were applied in recommended and double dose . Plant response to herbicides were evaluated twice ( visual estimation ) : in period 2-3 weeks after herbicide treatment and 2-3 weeks after first estimation . At the end of vegetation grain yield was measured . First herbicides group ( isoxaflutole , isoxaflutole + thiencarbazone - methil ) caused slight and very slight damages on leaves in only two lines in 2015 applied in double dose . In the same year , line L3 express medium damages in isoxaflutole treatment , with no damages in other lines . In 2016. there were no herbicides effects on tested herbicides . Second herbicide group ( nicosulfuron and foramsulfuron ) caused light damages in lines L3 and L4 ( both doses ) in 2015 , with medium damages in same treatment in second estimation . In second year , only foramsulfuron significantly influenced L3 in first and second estimation . Applied herbicides did not effects significantly grain yield in 2015 , while in 2016 only in few treatments grain yield was significantly lower compared to control. Obtained results indicated  high tolerance of tested lines.

AB  - Velika upotreba kukuruza šećerca u Ijudskoj populaciji zahteva poboljšani nutritivni kvalitet zrna. Folijarno đubrenje je agrotehnička mera koja se koristi kao dopuna osnovnom đubrenju. Folijarnom prihranom biljke se obezbeđuju esencijalnim mikroelementima, posebno u uslovima zemljišta sa nepoželjnim karakteristikama. Karotenoidi, pigmenti kukuruza, imaju blagotvorno dejstvo na zdravlje čoveka. Cilj rada je bio da se ispita uticaj primenjenog folijarnog đubriva na sadržaj karotenoida u zrnu tri hibrida kukuruza šećerca. Folijarno đubrivo je primenjeno kada je kukuruz bio u fazi 5-6 listova. Sadržaj karotenoida (lutein, zeaksantin i β -karoten) u zrnu nakon berbe u mlečnoj kao i u punoj zrelosti, određen je primenom HPLC- DAD metode. Studentov t-test pokazao je da primenjeno folijarno đubrivo statistički povećava sadržaj ukupnih karotenoida u zrnu svih analiziranih hibrida u poređenju sa kontrolom (bez primene folijarnog đubriva). Povećanje koncentracije ukupnih karotenoida u zrnu od mlečne do pune zrelosti bio je 27.44% - 38.52% i 31.78% - 57.03%, respektivno. Primenom folijarnog đubriva postignuto je očuvanje i poboljšanje sadržaja ukupnih karotenoida u zrnu kukuruza šećerca namenjenog za Ijudsku ishranu (mlečna zrelost) i semensku proizvodnju (puna zrelost). Stoga se može zaključiti da folijarno đubrenje predstavlja važnu agrotehničku meru koja obezbeđuje povećani nutritivni kvalitet tj. sadržaj karotenoida u zrnu kukuruza šećerca.
AB  - Broad usage of sweet maize in human population requires an improved nutritional quality of the grain. Foliar fertilization is a part of cropping practices used as a supplement to basic fertilization. Through foliar fertilization, plants are provided with essential nutrients, especially under the unfavorable soil characteristics conditions. Carotenoids, maize pigments, have a beneficial effect on the human health. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of the applied foliar fertilizer on the carotenoids content in kernel of three sweet maize hybrids. Foliar fertilizer was applied in the 5-6 leaf stage of maize. Carotenoids content (lutein, zeaxanthin and β-carotene) in kernel harvested in milky as well as in fully maturity phase, was determined by using HPLC-DAD. According to Student's t-test (p < 0.05), applied foliar fertilizer showed a statistical enhancement of total carotenoids content in all tested sweet maize hybrids, compared to the control (no foliar fertilizer application). The increment of the total carotenoids content in kernel from milky to fully maturity was 27.44% - 38.52% and 31.78% - 57.03%, respectively. The preservation and improvement of the total carotenoids content in sweet maize kernel intended for human consumption (milky phase) as well as for maize seed production (fully maturity phase) was achieved by foliar fertilizer application. Therefore, it can be concluded that foliar fertilization is an important part of cropping practices to provide higher nutritive quality i.e. carotenoids content in sweet maize grain.

Maize seedling performance as a potential index for drought tolerance

AB  - Twenty-six maize landraces were tested in order to evaluate maize seedling performance as an index for drought tolerance in adult plants. Samples were subjected to polyethylene glycol-induced osmotic stress at the early seedling stage. Grain yield was obtained in field experiments under well-watered (OC) and a combination of drought and high plant density (HD) conditions. Osmotic stress caused a reduction in seedling growth (length, fresh and dry weight), and increase in the shoot and in particular the root proline contents in the majority of landraces, and variations in root peroxidase (POD) activity. Genotypes displaying more pronounced root growth reduction and higher proline contents exhibited decreased POD activity under osmotic stress. Direct positive correlations between the proline content and growth inhibition, and between the proline and soluble protein content were established. Correlations between the changes in POD activity and growth parameters were significant and positive, and significant but negative with the changes in the proline content. In the field, water stress led to a reduction in grain yield in all of the tested landraces. Correlations between grain yield from both experimental sets (OC and HD) and osmotic-induced changes in seedling root growth were negative, which was opposite to the highly significant and positive correlations between the changes in the seedling root proline content and yield. Also, genotypes with the highest seedling root proline content increase under osmotic stress, exhibited the highest stress tolerance index (STI) based on grain yield achieved under both field conditions. Our results indicate that lower changes in POD activity and especially an increased proline content after exposure to osmotic stress during the early seedling stage could be considered as useful indices to facilitate selection efficiency for drought tolerance in adult plants.

Samples were subjected to polyethylene glycol-induced osmotic stress at the early seedling stage. Antioxidant profile, through the measurement of the soluble phenolic, carotenoids, phytic acid and glutathione concentration, in the grain of the three sweet maize hybrids after application of herbicides, foliar fertilizer, as well as their combinations, in field experiment, conducted over a two-year period, was determined. The content of tested antioxidant parameters was dependent on hybrids, growing season, as well as of the applied treatment. Sulfonylurea herbicides significantly increased the antioxidant status of sweet maize fresh grain, compared to the herbicide from triketone group, without affecting the fresh grain yield. Combination of herbicide plus foliar fertilizer expressed a various impact on antioxidant profile of the maize grain. Furthermore, significant correlations (positive and negative) between fresh grain yield and analyzed antioxidants in grain of three sweet maize hybrids were noticed.

Application of different methods for measuring carotenoid status in maize grain

AB  - Maize grain carotenoids are among the most abundant in cereals, exhibiting considerable diversity in the composition profiles. In this experiment, HPLC-DAD was used for lutein and zeaxanthin (predominant carotenoids) and β-carotene (proVA carotenoid) determination in flour of
whole maize kernel. In addition, Raman spectroscopy, as a non-destructive method for pretreatment-free and rapid in situ screening of carotenoids status in different kernel regions, was applied.
Six yellow maize inbred lines (L1-L6) were evaluated. After the spectral normalization, deconvolution was performed on three individual bands in three observed regions on kernel longitudinal
section (aleurone cell layer, floury and vitreous endosperm), for all genotypes. It was found that
the mean fitted area and intensity of three main carotenoid bands were the highest at 1520 cm-1,
medium at 1155 cm-1 and the lowest for the band at 1007 cm-1, as spectral features used to identify carotenoids and quantify relative carotenoid concentration. Both the highest values for mean
band fitted area and intensity observed in the floury endosperm, and the lowest in the aleurone
cell layer, were recorded in the same regions for all genotypes evaluated. L1 and L2 exhibited the
highest values, while L3 and L4 exhibited the lowest values for the average and total band area.
Significant and negative correlation between carotenoid content quantified by HPLC-DAD and
bands area fit for vitreous endosperm region obtained by Raman spectroscopy (-0.847; p≤0.05),
and between carotenoid content and total bands area (-0.898; p≤0.05) indicated the competition
for carbon supplies reflected through increased starch reposition over carotenoids accumulation.
