Nutritional and cost effects of adapted quality protein maize on broiler feeding

AB  - ZPQPM13 is a maize hybrid with improved protein quality, adapted to temperate climate growth conditions, developed by crossing a QPM version of ZPL5 commercial line (developed by marker assisted selection) and GS-6 (a QPM line with 50% tropical and 50% temperate germplasm). This hybrid has grain yield as commercial hybrids, over 90% of hard endosperm, contents of tryptophan and protein over 0.075% and 10%, respectively, and stability of tryptophan content over different locations and years. ZPQPM13 was tested for use in broiler feeds, with the aim to reduce utilization of costly synthetic lysine or soybean components. The feeding experiment on Ross 308 broilers was divided into two groups – control (fed with standard maize) and treatment (fed with QPM). In treatment group diets, ZPQPM13 was increased and soybean component decreased for 3%. Chemical analyses revealed higher contents of limiting essential amino acids in mercantile ZPQPM13 compared to standard maize – 0.44 vs. 0.25 % lysine, 0.077 vs. 0.070 % tryptophan and 0.39 vs. 0.27 % threonine. Duration of each feeding trial was 42 days, comprising three phases - starter (1-14 days), grower (15-35 days) and finisher (36-42 days). Feed intake (FI), body mass gain (BMG), average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were calculated at the end of each phase. In treatment group, FI was reduced, while BMG and ADG were higher in starter phase but lower in grower and finisher phases. FCR was lower in all three phases in treatment group – 1.13 vs. 1.30, 1.25 vs. 1.33 and 1.28 vs. 1.45. Although a small drawback is that final weight was 3.4 % higher in control broilers, comparison of feed and meat prices show that financial benefits of using QPM are still significant compared to using standard maize in feeds, as soybean is four times more expensive than maize.

Adapted quality protein maize for broiler feeds

AB  - Maize has low nutritional quality due to poor content of essential amino
acids lysine and tryptophan in the dominant seed storage protein fraction,
zeins. However, Quality Protein Maize (QPM), a variety of opaque2 maize
but with good agronomic traits, can have 60% to 100% higher content of
lysine than standard maize. Monogastric animals (pigs, poultry, fish), like
humans, cannot synthesize lysine and tryptophan de novo and thus these
amino acids must be supplied through diets. QPM was primarily developed
for human consumption to overcome malnutrition in countries where maize
is staple food. Thus, QPM is of tropical origin and its adaptation to temperate
regions is frequently hampered by the retained exotic germplasm.
Development of adapted QPM hybrids is mainly aimed for feed industry. It
has been shown that substituting standard maize with QPM in feed diets
could be profitable due to improved weight gain, feed conversion ratio and
decreasing of dietary lysine supplementation. Maize Research Institute,
Zemun Polje has a program on converting elite inbred lines through marker
assisted breeding into their QPM counterparts and developing commercial
QPM hybrids. Up to now, two inbred lines have been converted, while eight
lines have passed through three or four generations of backcrossing and one
generation of selfing. Tryptophan content in the converted selfed plants was
in the range from 0.080 to 0.093. Besides developing QPM counterparts of
commercial hybrids, one QPM hybrid obtained by crossing a converted elite
inbred line and an adapted tropical inbred line was developed and tested over
different locations and in different years. This hybrid is currently used in
feeding experiments with the objective to test effects of replacing standard
maize with QPM in diets on broiler performances.

AB  - Зрно кукуруза је важан извор минералних елемената у људској исхрани. Разлике у
садржају минерала у зрну кукуруза могу зависити од генотипа, система гајења,
примене ђубрива, као и метеоролошких услова. Циљ експеримента је био да се испита
утицај различитих система ђубрења (минерално ђубриво – уреа, органско ђубриво –
Fertor, микробиолошко ђубриво – Team micoriza plus, контрола – без ђубрења) на
принос и промене у садржају P, S, Ca, Mg и Fe у кукурузу белог, жутог и црвеног зрна,
током вегетационе сезоне 2017. и 2018. године. У погледу метеоролошких услова,
уочен је сушан период током јуна–августа 2017., док је 2018. имала равномеран
распоред падавина. Зато је у 2017. просечан принос зрна био скоро двоструко мањи, за
4,6 t ha-1, у односу на 2018. годину, али је у 2017. била знатно виша просечна
концентрација Ca, Mg, S и Fе. Зрно црвеног кукуруза је уз просечно већи принос, било
богатије у садржају Cа, Fе и P, док је, органско ђубриво у највећој мери утицало на
повећање приноса и акумулацију Mg, P и S. Код кукуруза црвеног зрна примена
органског ђубрива је у највећем степену довела до већег приноса, као и концентрације
Mg и P, док је микробиолошко ђубриво повећало концентрацију Ca, а уреа Fе. Једино
је већи ниво S био забележен у контроли код кукуруза жуте боје зрна. Највећа
варирања вредности приноса била су код жутог кукуруза (третман са органским
ђубривом и контрола) и црвеног у третману са уреом, док су највећа варирања P, S, Mg
и Fе била код кукуруза црвеног зрна (третман са микробилошким и органским
ђубривом), као и кукуруза жутог зрна у контроли. Приказани резултати указују да се
преко услова гајења може утицати на накупљање важних минерала у зрну кукуруза и
то посебно црвене боје, које би се стога могло сматрати важним извором P, Cа, Mg и
Fе, док би жуто зрно кукуруза могло представљати значајан извор S.
AB  - Maize kernel is an important source of mineral elements in human nutrition. Differences in
mineral content in maize kernel depend on genotype, cropping systems, fertilization, and
meteorological conditions. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of different
fertilization systems (mineral fertilizer – urea, organic fertilizer – Fertor, biofertilizer – Team
micoriza plus, control – without fertilization) on kernel yield and variations in content of P, S,
Ca, Mg, and Fe in kernel of white, yellow and red maize, during 2017 and 2018.
Meteorological conditions indicated dry period during June–August 2017, while in 2018
precipitations were equally distributed. Therefore, the average yield was almost double lower
in 2017 (to 4.6 t ha-1), compared to 2018, while higher average concentration of Ca, Mg, S,
and Fe in maize kernels was recorded in 2017. With higher average yield, red maize kernel
was richer in Ca, Fe, and P. Organic fertilizer increased average yield, and accumulation of
Mg, P, and S in kernels. In regard to combinations, application of organic fertilizer in red
maize resulted in increase of yield, Mg and P, while the biofertilizer increased Ca and urea
increased Fe concentration in kernel. S concentration achieved the highest value in the
control in yellow maize kernel. The greatest variations of kernel yield were in yellow maize
(treatment with the organic fertilizer and control) and in red maize with the urea treatment,
while the greatest variability of P, S, Mg, and Fe concentration was in red maize kernel
(treatment with the bio- and organic fertilizer), as well as yellow maize kernel in the control.
Presented results indicated that adjustments in growing conditions could impact accumulation
of important minerals in kernel, particularly in red maize, which could be considered as a
significant source of P, CA, Mg, and Fe, while yellow maize kernel could be referred as a
significant source of S.

4,6 t ha-1, у односу на 2018. годину, али је у 2017. била знатно виша просечна
концентрација Ca, Mg, S и Fе. Зрно црвеног кукуруза је уз просечно већи принос, било
богатије у садржају Cа, Fе и P, док је, органско ђубриво у највећој мери утицало на
повећање приноса и акумулацију Mg, P и S. Код кукуруза црвеног зрна примена
органског ђубрива је у највећем степену довела до већег приноса, као и концентрације
Mg и P, док је микробиолошко ђубриво повећало концентрацију Ca, а уреа Fе. Једино
је већи ниво S био забележен у контроли код кукуруза жуте боје зрна. Највећа
варирања вредности приноса била су код жутог кукуруза (третман са органским
ђубривом и контрола) и црвеног у третману са уреом, док су највећа варирања P, S, Mg
и Fе била код кукуруза црвеног зрна (третман са микробилошким и органским
ђубривом), као и кукуруза жутог зрна у контроли. Приказани резултати указују да се
преко услова гајења може утицати на накупљање важних минерала у зрну кукуруза и
то посебно црвене боје, које би се стога могло сматрати важним извором P, Cа, Mg и

AB  - Five maize hybrids were used in this research: two yellow and one white dent, sweet hybrid, and yellow popcorn. Five brine
recipes with acetic acid were examined, of which two with the addition of potassium sorbate. The brines with preservatives were
stable for 16 months without colour changes of the liquid and corn cobs. The pH of brines ranged from 3.39 to 3.89. Canned hybrids
ZP 366 and ZP 611k in brine without sugar, and with the addition of potassium sorbate and potassium metabisulfite marked as
Number 5, showed the best sensory characteristics. The protein content determined in ZP 366 (9.56 %) and ZP 611k (10.23 %) did
not vary significantly compared to whole-grain maize flour, while crude fibre content (7.67 and 6.88 %), and ash content (21.96 and
20.72 %) were significantly higher than in flour (crude fibre: 2.40; 2.64 %, ash:1.35; 1.48 %, respectively). This research will be
continued in order to implement preliminary findings and new data on this subject

Direct and Joint Effects of Genotype, Defoliation and Crop Density on the Yield of Three Inbred Maize Lines

AB  - The aim of this study was to observe direct and joint effects of three factors (genotypes,
ecological environmental conditions and the applied crop density) on the level of defoliation intensity
and yield. Three inbred lines (G) of maize (G1–L217RfC, G2–L335/99 and G3–L76B004) were used
in the study. The trials were performed in two years (Y) (Y1 = 2016 and Y2 = 2017) and in two
locations (L) (L1 and L2) under four ecological conditions of the year–location interaction (E1–E4)
and in two densities (D1 and D2) (50,000 and 65,000 plants ha−1
). Prior to tasselling, the following
five treatments of detasseling and defoliation (T) were applied: T1—control, no leaf removal only
detasseling, T2–T5—removal of tassels and top leaves (from one to four top leaves). The defoliation
treatments had the most pronounced effect on the yield reduction in G1 (T1–Tn+1 . . . T5), p < 0.05.
The ecological conditions on yield variability were expressed under poor weather conditions (E3 and
E4), while lower densities were less favorable for the application of defoliation treatments. The result
of joint effects of factors was the lowest grain yield (896 kg/ha) in G3 in the variant E3D1 for T2 and
the highest grain yield (11,389 kg/ha) in G3 in the variant E2D2 for T1. The smallest effect of the
defoliation treatment was on the kernel row number (KRN)

AB  - Introduction/purpose: This paper presents the results of several different research studies. The inbred lines ZPPL 146 and ZPPL 159 and the maize hybrids ZP 633, ZP 735, and ZP 737 are primarily intended for human and livestock nutrition. Their selection took about four decades. Methods: Spectral bands were registered using the method of resonant Raman spectroscopy of the leaves of inbred maize lines. These spectral bands indicate the conformational characteristics of not only carotenoid molecules but also other compounds (phosphate, gluten, and amide III) in the leaf. Results: A systematic examination of the inbred lines ZPPL 146 and ZPPL 159 and their maize hybrids ZP 633, ZP 735, and ZP 737 was performed in this paper. It was stated that the new inbred lines of corn, i.e. ZPPL 146 and ZPPL 159, are rich in carotenoids and yellow pigments. These lines also have significant quantities of other valuable bioactive compounds and good physical characteristics. The lines have an upright position of the top leaves and belong to the group of maize lines with significant characteristics of the photosynthetic model. They are resistant to high temperatures and are drought tolerant. Conclusion: This paper presents the relevant properties, characteristics and parameters of the new studied inbred maize lines that can be used in selection processes in the future. High-yielding and high-quality maize hybrids, i.e. ZP 633, ZP 735, and ZP 737, have been created from the mentioned inbred maize lines. They are recognizable by their qualities. The hybrid ZP633 is especially noteworthy for human consumption (children and the elderly). Further, from the agronomic-veterinary point of view, it is confirmed that the hybrids ZP 735 and ZP 737 are the most suitable for livestock feeding with the programmed use of corn silage. The relevant agronomic, morphological and nutritional properties of the maize hybrids ZP 633, ZP 735, and ZP 737 are also presented in this paper. The results regarding the grain structure and yield height for grain and silage for the hybrids ZP 677 and ZP 684, produced in Serbia and the countries of Southeastern Europe, are also given.

AB  - The  contemporary  trends  in  maize  breeding  are  directed  at  identification  of  genotypes  with improved grain quality for human consumption, industrial processing, and their incorporation into breeding  programmes.  In  this  study,  three  maize  hybrids  and  three  open-pollinated  varieties  (OPVs),  differing in grain colour and type, were used to examine the differences in the total carotenoid content, the phenolic compounds profile and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). In addition, physical parameters, basic  chemical  composition,  as  well  as  the  content  of  protein  fractions  in  grain,  were  analysed.  The  multivariate  approach  through  Principal  Component  Analysis  (PCA)  application  contributed  to  better  understanding  of  the  complexity  of  the  interdependence  for  maize  grain  quality  parameters  tested.  From  the  aspect  of  different  end  use,  better  technological  quality  desirable  for  dry  milling  and  snack  food processing found in OPVs Osmak and Bosanac, as well as high content of bioactive compounds (i.e. TAC) exhibited by OPV Rumenka, make these genotypes superior compared to hybrids’ varieties evaluated.
AB  - Savremeni trendovi u oplemenjivanju kukuruza idu u pravcu identifikacije genotipova povećanog kvaliteta zrna za ljudsku upotrebu, industrijsku preradu i njihovog uključivanja u komercijalne oplemenjivačke programe. Za ovo istraživanje odabrane su tri hibridne i tri slobodnooprašujuće sorte kukuruza različite po boji i tipu zrna, u cilju ispitivanja razlika u sadržaju ukupnih karotenoida, fenolnih jedinjenja i ukupnom antioksidativnom kapacitetu. Dodatno su analizirane fizičke karakteristike i osnovni hemijski sastav zrna, kao i sadržaj proteinskih frakcija. Multivarijacioni pristup, kroz primenu analize glavnih komponenata (PCA) doprineo je boljem razumevanju složenih veza ispitivanih parametara kvaliteta. Sa aspekta različite upotrebne vrednosti, bolji tehnološki kvalitet poželjan za proces suvog mlevenja i proces proizvodnje grickalica (snek proizvoda) je identifikovan kod slobodnooprašujućih sorti Osmak i Bosanac, dok se sorta Rumenka odlikovala visokim sadržajem bioaktivnih jedinjenja (tj. visokim antioksidativnim kapacitetom). Dobijeni rezultati ukazuju na superiornost slobodnooprašujućih sorti u poređenju sa hibridnim.

AB  - Quality protein maize (QPM) (Zea mays L.) is primarily used for food in countries of tropical and sub-tropical regions
where maize is the main source of protein. Although its cultivation in temperate regions is hampered by residues of
exotic germplasm, it could be beneficial for use in livestock feeds as it was shown that substitution of standard maize
with QPM can improve livestock characteristics and decrease dietary lysine supplementation. The aim of this study
was to test 11 QPM hybrids obtained by crossing adapted QPM inbred lines for their performance in field trials in 2
yr at four locations, as well as to determine their relevant biochemical components. The main reason for rejecting nine
QPM hybrids was low grain yield, standard hybrids had higher yields on average for 37.8%. Hybrid ZPQPM6 had good
agronomic characteristics, but its biochemical components were nonsignificantly different from the standard hybrid.
Only hybrid ZPQPM13 met necessary criteria, grain yield comparable with standard hybrids, high tryptophan content
in different environments (average 0.083%) and hard endosperm (average score 1.87). Lysine content, measured after
mercantile production, was 0.44%. Quality index, although below the QPM threshold (which is 0.80%) was significantly
higher (p < 0.05) in ZPQPM13 in comparison with standard hybrid, indicating improved nutritional quality of the protein.
The results indicated that presence of exotic germplasm in these QPM hybrids is a consequential difficulty and that in their
parental inbred lines at least one more backcross with temperate germplasm should be done to select better adapted QPM.

AB  - Results and discussion about observation of leaf infrared spectrum parameters with
the intention of overall characterisation of the traits of the elite maize inbred lines
ZPPL 186, ZPPL 225, ZP M1-3-3 Sdms are presented. The proposed hypothesis
was that numerous spectral bands of maize inbred lines leaves, not observed yet,
but occurring in the different kinetic forms (bands of high and low intensity, single
or grouped), should be systematically studied and the dynamics of their formation,
very often caused by different oscillations and vibrations of molecular
bonds, should be explained. In some cases, there is a possibility of the partial cancellation
or increase of spectral bands intensity. According to our hypothesis, low
intensity spectral bands imply the unstable state of the biological system (leaf),
which is a consequence of the excited state of molecules, radicals, atoms or ions
in tissues, cells or biomembranes. Similar transport processes occur when biological
systems are rhythmically excited, as well as when complex transport of ions
occur across the excited thylakoid membrane. These bands most frequently appear
in the wave number range of 500—1600 cm–1. Nevertheless, they fractionally occur
in the wave number up to 3000 cm–1. These spectral bands varied over inbred lines
used in this study. The systematic analysis of spectral bands of leaves of observed
maize inbred lines (for instance, high intensity bands with significant width on
3370 cm–1) showed the difference in their occurrence: the most intensive occurrence
was in leaves of the inbred line ZPPL 186, then in ZP M1-3-3 Sdms, while
the lowest intensity was detected in the inbred line ZPPL 225. In such a complex
way, it is possible to identify not only organic compounds and their structure in
leaves of observed maize inbred lines, but also to indicate the possibility of complex
inducement of their unstable and conformational states.
AB  - Представлены результаты изучения и обсуждение параметров инфракрасного спектра
листьев с целью общей характеристики признаков элитных инбредных линий
кукурузы ZPPL 186, ZPPL 225, ZP M1-3-3 Sdms. Предложенная гипотеза состояла в
том, что многочисленные спектральные полосы листьев инбредных линий кукурузы,
встречающиеся в различных кинетических формах (полосы высокой и низкой
интенсивности, одиночные или сгруппированные), следует систематически изучать,
и должна быть объяснена динамика их формирования, очень часто вызванная
различными колебаниями молекулярных связей. В некоторых случаях существует
возможность частичного подавления или увеличения интенсивности спектральных

тра листків з метою загальної характеристики ознак елітних інбредних ліній кукуруд-
зи ZPPL 186, ZPPL 225, ZP M1-3-3 Sdms. Запропонована гіпотеза полягала в тому,
що численні спектральні смуги листків інбредних ліній кукурудзи, які трапляються в
різних кінетичних формах (смуги високої та низької інтенсивності, поодинокі або
згруповані), слід систематично вивчати, і має бути пояснена динаміка їх формуван-
ня, дуже часто викликана різними коливаннями молекулярних зв’язків. У деяких ви-
падках існує можливість часткового пригнічення або збільшення інтенсивності спек-
тральних смуг. Згідно із запропонованою гіпотезою, спектральні смуги низької
інтенсивності припускають нестабільний стан біологічної системи (листка), який є
наслідком збудженого стану молекул, радикалів, атомів або іонів у тканинах, кліти-
нах чи біомембранах. Подібні переміщення відбуваються, коли біологічні системи
ритмічно збуджуються, а також коли здійснюється складний транспорт іонів через

ною при 3370 см–1) показав різницю в їх зустрічальності: найінтенсивніший прояв
був у листках інбредної лінії ZPPL 186, потім в ZP M1-3-3 Sdms, тоді як найнижча
інтенсивність була виявлена в інбредної лінії ZPPL 225. Таким комплексним спосо-
бом можна не тільки ідентифікувати органічні сполуки та їх структуру в листках
інбредних ліній кукурудзи, а й виявити можливість індукції їх нестійких і конфор-
маційних станів.

3000 см–1. Ці спектральні смуги розрізнялися по інбредних лініях, використаних у
цьому дослідженні. Систематичний аналіз спектральних смуг листків досліджуваних
інбредних ліній кукурудзи (наприклад, смуг високої інтенсивності зі значною шири-
ною при 3370 см–1) показав різницю в їх зустрічальності: найінтенсивніший прояв
був у листках інбредної лінії ZPPL 186, потім в ZP M1-3-3 Sdms, тоді як найнижча
інтенсивність була виявлена в інбредної лінії ZPPL 225. Таким комплексним спосо-
бом можна не тільки ідентифікувати органічні сполуки та їх структуру в листках
інбредних ліній кукурудзи, а й виявити можливість індукції їх нестійких і конфор-
маційних станів.",

AB  - In this article we used the method of IR spectroscopy to identify bioactive organic compounds and
their structural characteristics in the leaves of maize inbred lines ZPPL 186, ZPPL 225 and M1-3-3 Sdms
based on a standard study of high intensity high-amplitude spectral bands and based on attempt-study of
hypothetically influential low intensity low-amplitude spectral bands. The made assumption was that numerous
spectral bands, not analyzed yet, but occurring in different kinetic forms should be systematically analyzed
and the dynamics of their formation caused by different oscillations and vibrations of molecular bonds
of organic compounds and their functional groups should be proven. Low intensity spectral bands imply
unstable state of the biological system (leaf), which is a consequence of the excited state of molecules, radicals,
atoms or ions in tissues, cells or biomembranes. Similar transport processes occur when biological systems
are rhythmically stimulated, as well as in the case of a complex ion transport across the excited thylakoid
membrane. These bands most frequently occurred in the wave number range of 500–1600 cm–1; they
appeared in several spots in wave number ranges up to 3000 cm–1. Amines, primary and secondary amides,
proteins, amino acids, alkanes, alkenes, aldehydes, ketones, aromatic compounds, carbohydrates, carboxylic
acids, ethers, alcohols, sulfides, mono- and polysaccharides were identified in leaves of inbred lines. The
analysis of spectral bands showed that the most intensive was the inbred line ZPPL 186, then the ZPPL M1-3-3
Sdms, while the lowest intensity was detected in ZPPL 225. Thus, by overall study it is possible to identify not
only organic compounds and their structures in leaves of inbred lines, but also to indicate the possibility of
causing an unstable and conformational state in them.

AB  - The nature, role, and significance of low intensity spectral bands con-tained within the infrared spectra of kernels of high-yielding maize hybrids: ZP 341, ZP 434, and ZP 505 were observed in this study. The observations were performed to identify or-ganic molecules and their structural properties. The occurrence of unstable state of organic compounds and their functional groups are conditioned by such a process. The set hypoth-esis holds that there is a necessity to study the existence of many and low intensity spectral bands, not observed so far, occurring in different patterns (low intensity bands, single or grouped). They should be observed and the dynamics of their formation, caused by their different movements, including the possibility of their cancellation or amplification, should be explained. Such spectral bands most often appear in the wave number range of 400–950 cm-1. They occur in several wave numbers up to 3,000 cm-1 and are caused by different types of vibration movements (valence and deformation vibrations) of organic compounds and their functional groups: primary, secondary, and tertiary amides, proteins, free amino acids, alkanes, alkenes, aldehydes, ketones, aromatic compounds, cellulose, carbohydrates, car-boxylic acids, ethers, and alcohols. An unbiased analysis of low intensity spectral bands of maize hybrid kernels reveals that their occurrence is similar. Small differences, for some cases of the occurrence of low intensity spectral bands, can barely be ascertained. In this way, it is possible to establish not only the chemical composition of organic compounds of kernels of observed maize hybrids, but also it is possible to indicate their unstable, confor-mational, and functional properties.
AB  - У овом раду чини се покушај изучавања природе, улоге и значаја слабо развијених спектралних трака, садржаних у инфрацрвеним спектрима зрна високоприносних хибрида кукуруза: ZP 341, ZP 434 и ZP 505. Ова проучавања вршена су ради идентификације органских молекула и утврђивања њихових структурних карактеристика. Оваквим процесом условљава се појава нестабилног стања органских једињења и њихових функционалних група. Износи се хипотеза да се постојање бројних и слабо развијених спектралних трака, које до сада нису изучаване, а које се појављују у различитој форми (слабог интензитета), појављују појединачно или груписано. Њих је неопходно посебно изучавати и објашња-вати динамику њиховог настајања условљавану различитим карактером њиховог кретања, што укључује и могућност њиховог потирања или увећавања. Овакве спек   тралне траке најчешће се појављују у опсегу таласног броја од 400 до 950 cm-1. Оне се успостављају, ту и тамо, на више места таласног броја све до 3.000 cm-1, а настају различитим карактером вибрационог кретања (валенционо осциловање и деформационо вибрирање) органских једињења и функционалних група и то: примарни, секундарни и терцијарни амиди, протеин, слободне аминокисeлине, алкани, алкени, алдехиди, кетони, ароматична једињења, целулоза, угљоводони ци, карбоксилне киселине, етри и алкохоли. Непристрасном анализом слабо разви  је  них спектралних трака зрна три проучавана хибрида кукуруза стиче се сазнање да је њихово појављивање слично. Мање разлике, за неке случајеве појављивања слабих спектралних трака, једва да се могу констатовати. На овај начин, могуће је утврди-ти не само структуру органских једињења у зрну проучаваних хибрида кукуруза, него и указати на њихова нестабилна, конформациона и функционална стања.

AB  - Phenotypic measurements under controlled cultivation conditions are essential to gain
a mechanistic understanding of plant responses to environmental impacts and thus
for knowledge-based improvement of their performance under natural field conditions.
Twenty maize inbred lines (ILs) were phenotyped in response to two levels of water and
nitrogen supply (control and stress) and combined nitrogen and water deficit. Over a
course of 5 weeks (from about 4-leaf stage to the beginning of the reproductive stage),
maize phenology and growth were monitored by using a high-throughput phenotyping
platform for daily acquisition of images in different spectral ranges. The focus of the
present study is on the measurements taken at the time of maximum water stress (for
traits that reflect plant physiological properties) and at the end of the experiment (for
traits that reflect plant architectural and biomass-related traits). Twenty-five phenotypic
traits extracted from the digital image data that support biological interpretation of
plant growth were selected for their predictive value for mid-season shoot biomass
accumulation. Measured fresh and dry weights after harvest were used to calculate
various indices (water-use efficiency, physiological nitrogen-use efficiency, specific plant
weight) and to establish correlations with image-derived phenotypic features. Also, score
indices based on dry weight were used to identify contrasting ILs in terms of productivity
and tolerance to stress, and their means for image-derived and manually measured traits
were compared. Color-related traits appear to be indicative of plant performance and
photosystem II operating efficiency might be an importance physiological parameter
of biomass accumulation, particularly under severe stress conditions. Also, genotypes
showing greater leaf area may be better adapted to abiotic stress conditions.

AB  - Genetic distance among six elite maize inbred lines was analyzed using SSR markers. Hybrid progeny obtained by crossing inbred lines according an incomplete diallel design was tested in field trials together with inbred lines per se.The objective of this study was to determine genetic distance of inbred maize lines and to examine if a significant correlation exist between the genetic distance of parental lines and the exhibited high parent heterosis (HPH) and specific combining abilities (SCA) for grain yield, ear lenght, kernel row numberand number of kernels per row. Twenty one SSR primers were used for genetic assesment of inbreds with detected 92 alleles. Genetically most distant lines were ZPL1 and ZPL5 and ZPL6 with the GD value of 0.549, while the closest one were ZPL2 and ZPL3 with GD value of 0.11. The dendrogram distinguished two main groups of inbreds: ZPL5 and ZPL6 grouped in a smaller cluster and ZPL1, ZPL2, ZPL3 and ZPL4 forming the second cluster. Values of the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient between genetic distance among inbred lines based on SSR markers and SCA for all analyzed traits were positive and significant with the exception of rows per ear. Highest correlation was exhibited between the genetic distance and SCA for number of kernels per row (0.643). Spearman's rank correlation coefficient between GD and high parent heterosis was positive and significant for ear length and kernel number in row with coefficient values of 0.554 and 0.611, respectively.

AB  - Molekularna genetika je danas sastavni deo različitih programa selekcije i oplemenjivanja žitarica u svetu. Najveći napredak u oplemenjivanju primenom molekularnih markera (eng. Marker Assisted Selection - MAS) postignut je kod kvalitativnih osobina koje su regulisane dejstvom jednog ili nekoliko gena i jasno su fenotipski definisane. Molekularni markeri se koriste kao selekcioni markeri za željeni gen (foreground selection), kao i radi utvrđivanja procenta genoma rekurentnog roditelja u potomstvima povratnih ukrštanja (background selection). Primena foreground i background selekcije smanjuje broj generacija potrebnih za stvaranje željenog genotipa klasičnim metodama selekcije koje se zasnivaju na fenotipskom odabiru biljaka.
Jedan od primera uspešne primene MAS je povećanje hranljive vrednosti zrna kukuruza. Upotrebom molekularnih markera specifičnih za ciljne gene opaque2, crtRB1 i lpa2-2 dobijaju se linije kukuruza visokog kvaliteta proteina, visokog sadržaja beta karotena i niskog sadržaja fitina, redom. Dobijene linije koriste se za stvaranje agronomski superiornih hibrida povećane hranljive i biološke vrednosti.
U Institutu za kukuruz "Zemun Polje" razvijen je program stvaranja genotipova kukuruza visokog kvaliteta proteina (eng. Quality Protein Maize - QPM) adaptiranih na umereno klimatsko područje kombinovanim pristupom klasične selekcije i selekcije pomoću molekularnih markera. Jedna komercijalna linija prevedena je na QPM varijantu, korišćenjem tropske linije CML 144 kao donora poželjnih svojstava, u procesu koji se sastojao iz dva ciklusa povratnog ukrštanja i tri ciklusa samooplodnje. Ukrštanjem ove prevedene linije sa američkim QPM linijama dobijeni su hibridi poboljšanog kvaliteta proteina namenjeni ishrani tovnih pilića i prasića.
AB  - Molecular genetic technologies are implemented into modern grain breeding programs in the world. The greatest progress in marker assisted selection (MAS) has been achieved with the qualitative traits that are regulated by the action of a single or several genes and are clearly phenotypically defined. Markers can be used to either control the target gene (foreground selection) or to accelerate the reconstruction of the recurrent parent genotype (background selection). Both foreground and background selection decrease the number of the generations required to create desirable genotype through conventional breeding based on the fenotypic selection. 
One successful example of MAS application is the improvement of the maize nutritional value. Using specific molecular markers for desirable genes opaque2, crtRB1 and lpa2-2, maize lines with enhanced protein quality, enhanced β-carotene content and low phytic acid content are developed, respectively. These lines are being used to obtain high-yielding hybrids with improved nutritional benefit. 
Breeding program for developing quality protein maize (QPM) adapted to temperate regions through marker assisted selection is being conducted at Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje. One commercial inbred line was converted to its QPM counterpart, using tropical QPM line CML 144 as a donor line, after two generations of backcrossing and three generations of selfing. By crossing this converted line with American QPM lines, the hybrids with enhanced protein quality aimed for broiler and piglets feeding are obtained.

AB  - The infrared spectroscopy was applied on kernels of the following maize inbred
lines with significant traits: ZPPL 186, ZPPL 225 and M1-3-3 Sdms, with the aim
to determine structural properties of organic compounds and their unstable state.
The set hypothesis was that it was necessary to observe the existence of numerous
and different spectral bands, not studied so far, occurring in various patterns (bands
of low intensity, single or grouped) and to explain the nature and the dynamics of
their formation. Such spectral bands were observed in the wave number range of
400—2925 cm—1 and are caused by the different types of vibration movements
(valence and deformation vibrations) of organic compounds: alkenes, aromatic
compounds, alcohols, ethers, carboxylic acids, esters, amines, amides, alkanes,
nitro compounds, ketones, aldehydes, alkynes, nitriles and phenols. In this way, it
is possible to establish not only the structure of organic compounds of kernels of
observed maize inbred lines, but also it is possible to point out to their unstable,
conformational and functional properties. The importance of intensity, shape and
kinetics of spectral bands, expressing unstable processes in biological systems and
bioactive organic molecules, has been studied and emphasised for the first time.
AB  - В работе рассмотрено применение метода инфракрасной спектроскопии зерен элитных инбредных линий кукурузы ZPPL 186, ZPPL 225 и M1-3-3 Sdms с целью определения структурных характеристик органических соединений и их неустойчивого состояния. Выдвинута гипотеза о необходимости изучения различных многочисленных спектральных полос, неисследованных до сих пор, появляющихся в различных формах (полосы низкой интенсивности, одиночные или сгруппированные), объяснения природы и динамики их образования. Такие спектральные полосы наблюдались в диапазоне волн 400—2925 см—1, они вызваны различными типами колебаний (валентных и деформационных) органических соединений: алкенов, ароматических
соединений, спиртов, простых эфиров, карбоновых кислот, сложных эфиров, аминов, амидов, алканов, нитросоединений, кетонов, альдегидов, алкинов, нитрилов и фенолов. Таким образом, можно установить не только структуру органических соединений зерен наблюдаемых инбредных линий кукурузы, но также указать их неустойчивые, конформационные и функциональные свойства. В работе впервые акцентирована важность изучения формы, кинетики и интенсивности спектральных полос, выражающих неустойчивые процессы в биологических системах и биоактивных органических молекулах.
AB  - У роботі розглянуто застосування методу інфрачервоної спектроскопії зерен елітних
інбредних ліній кукурудзи ZPPL 186, ZPPL 225 і M1-3-3 Sdms з метою визначення структурних характеристик органічних сполук та їх нестійкого стану. Висунуто гіпотезу про необхідність вивчення різних численних спектральних смуг,
недосліджених досі, що з'являються в різних формах (смуги низької інтенсивності,
поодинокі або згруповані), пояснення природи і динаміки їх утворення. Такі спектральні смуги спостерігали в діапазоні хвиль 400—2925 см-1, вони спричинені різними типами коливань (валентних і деформаційних) органічних сполук: алкенів,ароматичних сполук, спиртів, простих ефірів, карбонових кислот, складних ефірів,
амінів, амідів, алканів, нітросполук, кетонів, альдегідів, алкінів, нітрилів і фенолів.
Отже, можна встановити не тільки структуру органічних сполук зерен досліджуваних

Biochemical and physical kernel properties of a standard maize hybrid in different TopCross (TM) Blends

AB  - A pilot experiment was undertaken in order to examine high oil populations of maize (Zea mays L.) to be used as pollinators in TopCross blends with commercial ZP341 standard hybrid. Five high oil populations (HOPs) from the Maize Research Institute (MRI) gene bank were chosen for this research, according to their high grain oil content, synchrony between silking of ZP341 and anthesis of the populations and good agronomic performances in 2012. Selfing of ZP341 and HOPs, as well as crosses of ZP341 cmsS sterile x HOPs were carried out in 2013. Oil content, fatty acid composition, protein and tryptophan content, and physical characteristics of the obtained kernels were measured. Four HOPs showed significant positive influence on the oil content in the TopCrosses (TC), 16.85 g kg(-1) on average. Oleic acid, which is the principal monounsaturated fatty acid, was significantly lower in all HOPs and all TCs, while selfed ZP341 had almost twice the average value typical for standard maize. However, this decrease in TCs was in a narrow range from 1 % (in TC-3) to 5 % (in TC-4) and the oleic content of TCs was on average higher by 60 % compared to the typical standard maize. Different favorable and unfavorable significant changes were detected in fatty acid compositions, protein and tryptophan contents and physical kernel properties for each potential TC combination. Results indicate differences in gene effects present in different TC combinations and underscore the need to examine each potential TC blend by conducting similar simple experiments.
