Composition of Anthocyanins in Colored Grains and the Relationship of Their Non-Acylated and Acylated Derivatives

AB  - Colored grains are rich sources of anthocyanins that could play an important role in the prevention of various diseases associated with oxidative
stress. Bearing in mind that cereals are widely grown crops, anthocyanins-rich colored grains could be used as a functional food ingredient that
provides health benefi ts to a large part of human world’s population. This study investigated composition and content of anthocyanins in the grain
of blue popping maize, deep purple maize, purple wheat, and black soybean. The relationship of acylated and non-acylated forms before and after
alkaline hydrolysis of anthocyanin extracts has been studied as well. Deep purple maize had the highest content of total anthocyanins reaching as
much as 4988.90 mg CGE/kg d.m. Ten anthocyanins were identifi ed in blue popping maize, of which two are isomers of cyanidin-3-(malonylglucoside)
and three of cyanidin-3-(dimalonyl-β-glucoside). Seven, nine, and three anthocyanins have been identifi ed in the deep purple maize, purple wheat,
and black soybean, respectively. Cyanidin derivatives were predominant and their acylated forms accounted for about 98, 29, 71, and 0% of the total
anthocyanins content in the grains, respectively. According to the study, acylated derivatives were completely degraded under the effect of highly alkaline
pH. However, at the beginning of their degradation they were transformed to their non-acylated parents.
The results could be useful to better understanding of the nature of anthocyanin in colored grains and, in that regard, their use for the derivation
of food products with functional potential, as well as of natural dyes and pharmaceutical ingredients.

Complete Study of Nature and Importance of Spectral Bands Contained in Infrared Spectra of Leaves of Maize Inbred Lines with Significant Breeding Properties

AB  - In this article we used the method of IR spectroscopy to identify bioactive organic compounds and
their structural characteristics in the leaves of maize inbred lines ZPPL 186, ZPPL 225 and M1-3-3 Sdms
based on a standard study of high intensity high-amplitude spectral bands and based on attempt-study of
hypothetically influential low intensity low-amplitude spectral bands. The made assumption was that numerous
spectral bands, not analyzed yet, but occurring in different kinetic forms should be systematically analyzed
and the dynamics of their formation caused by different oscillations and vibrations of molecular bonds
of organic compounds and their functional groups should be proven. Low intensity spectral bands imply
unstable state of the biological system (leaf), which is a consequence of the excited state of molecules, radicals,
atoms or ions in tissues, cells or biomembranes. Similar transport processes occur when biological systems
are rhythmically stimulated, as well as in the case of a complex ion transport across the excited thylakoid
membrane. These bands most frequently occurred in the wave number range of 500–1600 cm–1; they
appeared in several spots in wave number ranges up to 3000 cm–1. Amines, primary and secondary amides,
proteins, amino acids, alkanes, alkenes, aldehydes, ketones, aromatic compounds, carbohydrates, carboxylic
acids, ethers, alcohols, sulfides, mono- and polysaccharides were identified in leaves of inbred lines. The
analysis of spectral bands showed that the most intensive was the inbred line ZPPL 186, then the ZPPL M1-3-3
Sdms, while the lowest intensity was detected in ZPPL 225. Thus, by overall study it is possible to identify not
only organic compounds and their structures in leaves of inbred lines, but also to indicate the possibility of
causing an unstable and conformational state in them.

Genetic distance of maize inbred lines based on SSR markers for prediction of heterosis and combining ability

AB  - Genetic distance among six elite maize inbred lines was analyzed using SSR markers. Hybrid progeny obtained by crossing inbred lines according an incomplete diallel design was tested in field trials together with inbred lines per se.The objective of this study was to determine genetic distance of inbred maize lines and to examine if a significant correlation exist between the genetic distance of parental lines and the exhibited high parent heterosis (HPH) and specific combining abilities (SCA) for grain yield, ear lenght, kernel row numberand number of kernels per row. Twenty one SSR primers were used for genetic assesment of inbreds with detected 92 alleles. Genetically most distant lines were ZPL1 and ZPL5 and ZPL6 with the GD value of 0.549, while the closest one were ZPL2 and ZPL3 with GD value of 0.11. The dendrogram distinguished two main groups of inbreds: ZPL5 and ZPL6 grouped in a smaller cluster and ZPL1, ZPL2, ZPL3 and ZPL4 forming the second cluster. Values of the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient between genetic distance among inbred lines based on SSR markers and SCA for all analyzed traits were positive and significant with the exception of rows per ear. Highest correlation was exhibited between the genetic distance and SCA for number of kernels per row (0.643). Spearman's rank correlation coefficient between GD and high parent heterosis was positive and significant for ear length and kernel number in row with coefficient values of 0.554 and 0.611, respectively.

AB  - U ovom istraživanju ispitivana je genetička osnova nasleđivanja važnih agronomskih osobina kukuruza upotrebom različitih biometrijskih metoda. Poljski ogledi su postavljeni tokom 2011. i 2012. godine na tri lokacije: Zemun Polje, Pančevo i Bečej.Šest inbred linija koje su ukrštene međusobno bez recipročnih kombinacija dajući 15 hibrida su upotrebljene kao materijal za primenu dialelne analize. Većina linija su male visoko značajne vrednosti OKS i PKS za ispitivane osobine što je omogućilo da se identifikuju linije kao izvori poželjnih alela za dalji rad. Linija ZPL6 se istakla kao dobar kombinator za većinu ispitivanih osobina. Odnos OKS/PKS je ukazao na veću važnost gena sa dominatnim efektom na nasleđivanje prinosa zrna, visine biljke i klipa, dok je za dužinu klipa, broj redova zrna i broj listova veći značaj imali geni sa aditivnim delovanjem.Analiza genetičke varijanse je ukazala na veći značaj dominantnih komponenti H1 i H2 u odnosu na aditivnu (D) osim za broj redova zrna u obe i broj listova iznad klipa u 2012. godini.Za analizu proseka generacija izabrano je 3 hibrida iz dialelne analize koji su delili jednog zajedničkog roditelja (ZPL6). Stvoreno je šest različitih generacija svakog hibrida P1, P2, BC1, BC2, F2 i F1 čime je omogućeno ispitivanje dvogenske epistaze u nasleđivanju ispitivanih osobina. Visoko značajne vrednosti epistaze su utvrđene za najveći broj osobina što se može objasniti time što je ispitivani materijal elitnog porekla i nastao kroz nekoliko ciklusa selekcije. Za broj redova zrna u 2011. godini nije pronađena epistaza. Za veći broj osobina (prinos zrna, visina biljke, visina klipa..)su utvrđene značajne vrednosti epistaze između dominatnih gena duplikatnog tipa koja je redukovala osnovne genske efekte...
AB  - In this study the genetic basis of inheritance of important agronomic traits of maize was examined using different biometric methods. Field trials were conducted during two years 2011 and 2012 on three locations: Zemun Polje, Pančevo and Bečej.Six inbred lines were crossed with each other without reciprocal combination giving 15 hybrids that were used as material for the application of diallel analysis. Most of the lines exhibited highly significant GCA and SCA values for the examined traits which made it possible to identify the lines that could be used as sources of desirable alleles. Inbred line ZPL6 showed to be a good combiner for most of the studied traits. The GCA / SCA ratio pointed at the greater importance of genes with dominant and epistatic effect on the inheritance of grain yield, plant and ear height, while for the ear length, kernel row number and leaf number, genes with additive effects were of greater importance.The analysis of genetic variance indicated a greater importance of the dominant components H1 and H2 compared to the additive (D) for most traits except for the number of kernel rows in both years, and the leaf number above the ear in year 2012.For the generation mean analysis three hybrids from the diallel crosses sharing a common parent (ZPL6) were selected. Six different generations of each hybrid was created: P1, P2, BC1, BC2, F2 i F1 enabling testing the existence of two-gene epistasis in the inheritance of the traits investigated. Highly significant values of epistasis were found for most of the traits which could be explained by the fact that the investigated material is of elite origin and was created through several cycles of selection. For the number of kernel rows in 2011 no epistasis was found...

The GCA / SCA ratio pointed at the greater importance of genes with dominant and epistatic effect on the inheritance of grain yield, plant and ear height, while for the ear length, kernel row number and leaf number, genes with additive effects were of greater importance.The analysis of genetic variance indicated a greater importance of the dominant components H1 and H2 compared to the additive (D) for most traits except for the number of kernel rows in both years, and the leaf number above the ear in year 2012.For the generation mean analysis three hybrids from the diallel crosses sharing a common parent (ZPL6) were selected. Six different generations of each hybrid was created: P1, P2, BC1, BC2, F2 i F1 enabling testing the existence of two-gene epistasis in the inheritance of the traits investigated. AB  - A relatively narrow genetic background, limited sources of germplasm that satisfies commercial standards, poorly defined heterotic groups, as well as a small span for yield and quality estimation are reasons for the modest improvement in sweet corn yields in comparison with standard grain quality maize. Therefore, any additional information could be of a great use. Based on the phenotypic characterization according to UPOV descriptor, phenotypic distances of 14 ZP sweet corn inbred lines were evaluated, and clustering was performed. Grouping showed that 9 out of 11 hybrids obtained by crossings of 14 sweet corn inbred lines had parental lines assigned to different subclusters. Two hybrids whose parental components belonged to the same subcluster had some important specific traits, such as early maturity (ZP 111su), and super-sweet germplasm (ZP 407su). Results obtained by this procedure could be of great assistance in the process of selecting parental lines for the future crossings.
AB  - Relativno uska genetička osnova, ograničeni resursi germplazme koja zadovoljava komercijalne standarde, loše definisane heterotične grupe kao i kratko vreme koje je na raspolaganju za procenu prinosa i kvaliteta su razlozi slabijeg unapređenja prinosa hibrida kukuruza šećerca u poređenju sa hibridima standardnog kvaliteta zrna. Stoga svaka dodatna informacija može da bude od velikog značaja. Na osnovu karakterizacije po UPOV deskriptoru urađena je klaster analiza 14 ZP linija kukuruza šećerca. Grupisanje je ukazalo da su se roditeljske linije 9 od 11 hibrida grupisale u različite podklastere. Dva hibrida, čije su se roditeljske linije grupisale u isti klaster su nosioci nekih specifičnih karakteristika kao što je ranostasnost (ZP 111su) i super-slatka germplazma (ZP 407su). Rezultati grupisanja dobijeni ovom procedurom mogu biti od velike pomoći pri izboru roditeljskih linija za buduća ukrštanja linija šećerca.

Grain quality of drought tolerant accessions within the MRI Zemun Polje maize germplasm collection

AB  - Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje (MRI) gene bank created an elite drought tolerant core collection of 40 accessions, based on field trials and general combining ability with inbred lines from the main heterotic groups (Lancaster, Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic BSSS and Iodent). A total of seven genetic groups were identified. Seven accessions showed good combining abilities with three testers from chosen heterotic groups, thus forming a distinctive genetic group (Unknown). In the present research, accessions with drought tolerance were also analyzed for grain quality, as these two traits are becoming highly important due to global warming and population growth. Kernel macronutrients contents (oil, protein and starch) were determined using Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR). Oil, protein and starch contents were significantly higher in introduced populations than in landraces for 0.43%, 0.12% and 0.85%, respectively (p  lt  0.01). The greatest progress from the selection based on the expected genetic gain (Delta G) for 5% selection intensity would be obtained for oil (14.74%) followed by protein (10.14%). Landraces showed the least potential for the grain quality improvement due to the lowest expected Delta G for the three macronutrients. The differences between macronutrient content among genetic groups defined them as potentially favourable sources for a specific trait. According to Delta G values, the greatest progress in breeding would be accomplished for increased oil content with accessions from the Unknown group. Identification of the accessions with several favorable traits is valuable for simultaneous breeding for drought tolerance and grain quality.

AB  - This study confirmed our hypothesis that new maize inbred lines and hybrids derived from them had a dominant property of an efficient photosynthetic model. This property is successfully used in breeding programmes, modern technologies of the seed, and commercial maize production. This statement is supported by the results displayed on the erect position of the top leaves of new maize inbred lines and photosynthetic and florescence parameters: the change of the delayed chlorophyll fluorescence intensity during its course and dynamics, the Arrhenius criterion for the determination of critical temperatures (phase transition temperatures) and the activation energies, as a measure of conformational changes in chloroplasts and the thylakoid membrane. Furthermore, a grain structure including its physical and chemical parameters of new maize inbred lines and hybrids was analysed in the present study. In addition, relevant breeding, seed production and technological traits, properties and parameters of new maize inbred lines and maize hybrids were observed in the present study. The overall presented results show that properties of new inbred lines and maize hybrids are based on the nature of conformational and functional changes that occur in their chloroplasts and thylakoid membranes, as well as, on progressive effects in modern breeding, contemporary hybrid seed production, and the commercial maize production.
AB  - Proučavane su dve nove inbred linije kukuruza: ZPPL 218 i ZPPL 318 i sa njima stvoreni perspektivni hibridi ZP 600, ZP 606 i ZP 666 za koje je dokazano da poseduju dominantno svojstvo efikasnog fotosintetičnog modela što se uspešno koristi u oplemenjivanju, savremenim tehnologijama za proizvodnju hibridnog semena i merkantilnog kukuruza. Ovoj konstataciji idu u prilog izloženi rezultati o uspravnom položaju vršnih listova novih inbred linija kukuruza i o fotosintetično-fluorescentnim pokazateljima: promeni intenziteta zakasnele fluorescencije hlorofila u njenom toku i dinamici, Arenijusovom kriterijumu za određivanje kritičnih temperatura (temperature faznih prelaza) i o energiji aktivacije kao meri strukturnih promena u hloroplastima i tilakoidnoj membrani. U radu se analizira struktura zrna uključujući i njegove fizičke i hemijske pokazatelje novih inbred linija i hibrida kukuruza. Isto tako, u radu se razmatraju relevantna selekcionarska, semenarska i tehnološka svojstva, karakteristike i parametri novih inbred linija i hibrida kukuruza. AB  - U ovom radu vršena su proučavanja novih elitnih inbred linija kukuruza: ZPPL 218 i ZPPL 318 i perspektivnih hibrida kukuruza ZP 600, ZP 606 i ZP 666 stvorenih iz njih. Pokazano je da se potvrđuje naša hipoteza da nove elitne inbred linije i perspektivni hibridi kukuruza poseduju dominantno svojstvo efikasnog fotosintetičnog modela što se uspešno koristi u oplemenjivanju, savremenim tehnologijama proizvodnje hibridnog semena i merkantilnog kukuruza. Ukupno izloženi rezultati pokazuju da su svojstva novih inbred linija i perspektivnih hibrida kukuruza, zasnovana na prirodi strukturnih i funkcionalnih promena koje se odigravaju u hloroplastima i tilakoidnim membranama, kao i na progresivnim efektima u oplemenjivanju, savremenoj proizvodnji hibridnog semena i merkatilnog kukuruza.

abstract = "This study confirms the hypothesis that there are new elite maize inbred lines and prospective hybrids, which have a dominant property of an efficient photosynthetic model that is successfully used in breeding programmes, modern technologies of the seed and commercial maize production. This statement is supported by the displayed results on the erect position of the top leaves of new maize inbred lines and photosynthetic and florescence parameters: the change of the delayed chlorophyll fluorescence intensity during its course and dynamics, the Arrhenius criterion for the determination of critical temperatures (phase transition temperatures) and the activation energies, as a measure of conformational changes in chloroplasts the thylakoid membrane. Furthermore, a grain structure, including its physical and chemical parameters, of new maize inbred lines was analysed in the present study. Also, relevant breeding, seed production and technological traits, properties and parameters of new inbred lines and prospective maize hybrids were observed in the present study. The presented results show that properties of new inbred lines and prospective maize hybrids are based on the nature of conformational and functional changes that occur in their chloroplasts and thylakoid membranes, as well as, on progressive effects in maize breeding, modern hybrid seed production and the commercial maize production., U ovom radu vršena su proučavanja novih elitnih inbred linija kukuruza: ZPPL 218 i ZPPL 318 i perspektivnih hibrida kukuruza ZP 600, ZP 606 i ZP 666 stvorenih iz njih. Pokazano je da se potvrđuje naša hipoteza da nove elitne inbred linije i perspektivni hibridi kukuruza poseduju dominantno svojstvo efikasnog fotosintetičnog modela što se uspešno koristi u oplemenjivanju, savremenim tehnologijama proizvodnje hibridnog semena i merkantilnog kukuruza. Ovoj konstataciji idu u prilog izloženi rezultati o uspravnom položaju vršnih listova novih inbred linija kukuruza i o fotosintetički-fluorescentnim pokazateljima: promeni intenziteta zakasnele fluorescencije hlorofila u njenom toku i dinamici, Arenijusovom kriterijumu za određivanje kritičnih temperature (temperature faznih prelaza) i o energiji aktivacije kao meri strukturnih promena u hloroplastima i tilakoidnoj membrani. U radu se analiziraju struktura zrna uključujući i njegove fizičke i hemijske pokazatelje novih inbred linija kukuruza. Isto tako, u radu se razmatraju relevantna selekcionarska, semenarska i tehnološka svojstva, karakteristike i parametri novih inbred linija i perspektivnih hibrida kukuruza. AB  - Growing competitive crops is an important component of the integrated weed management system, although selection of genotypes with the increased competitive ability is rather difficult. The possibility of reducing weed infestation by increasing the competitive activity of crops by growing genotypes, i.e. hybrids that better 'endure' a greater density, depends on the FAO maturity group and morphological properties of a genotype, environmental conditions and the growing regions. The competition between maize and weeds varies over the modified crop arrangement pattern. The greatest weed infestation is recorded in the crops of the sparse-spaced plants, while the height and the weight of weeds are significantly lower in closely-spaced plants. The height, growth intensity in the initial stages, embryo vigour and leaf area of the plant are important for a greater competitive ability, as they are components of competitive effects of crops on weeds. Weed infestation and maize hybrids yielding were studied in dependence on the hybrids arrangement pattern and the application of herbicides. Obtained results show statistically significant differences in the weed fresh weight, but only in certain years and in accordance with differences in the height and the leaf area of ZP maize hybrids.
AB  - Gajenje kompetitivnijih useva je važna komponenta integralnog sistema suzbijanja korova, iako je selekcija genotipova sa povećanom kompetitivnom sposobnošću dosta teška. Mogućnost smanjenja zakorovljenosti na osnovu povećanja kompetitivnog delovanja useva gajenjem genotipova tj. hibrida koji bolje 'podnose' veću gustinu, zavisi od FAO grupe zrenja i morfoloških karakteristika genotipa, uslova spoljašnje sredine i područja gajenja. Kompeticija između kukuruza i korova se menja sa promenom gustine i rasporeda gajenih biljaka. Najzakorovljeniji su usevi retkog sklopa, dok su visina i masa korova u usevima gustog sklopa znatno niže. Za veću kompetitivnost genotipa kukuruza u odnosu na korove važni su visina, intenzitet rastenja u početnim fazama, vigor klijanaca i lisna površina biljke, koje su komponente konkurentskog delovanja useva na korove. U radu je ispitivana zakorovljenost i produktivnost različitih hibrida kukuruza u zavisnosti od prostornog rasporeda u kome su gajeni i primene herbicida. Rezultati pokazuju da su pri gajenju ispitivanih genotipova kukuruza utvrđene statistički značajne razlike u svežoj masi korova, ali samo u pojedinim godinama, u skladu sa razlikama u visini i lisnoj površini ZP hibrida.
