AB  - In this paper the changes on growth, photosynthesis and water relations were tested by non-invasive fluorescence method. The applications of this method allow to determine some functional properties of prestigious maize inbred lines with erect top leaves. So the temperature dependency of delayed fluorescence intensity maximum of ZPPL 16 is observed at higher temperatures than for ZPPZ 62. This fact correlates with low values of phase transition of activation energy Ea in thylakoid membrane and accompanied by a decrease of the angle and area of the leaf, as well as with the content and the rate of water release from the seed. It seems reasonable to assume that, DF can be applied in breeding and maize hybrid seed production for the estimation of prestigious maize inbred lines and their resistance adaptability to increased and high temperatures, as well as, to drought.

AB  - This study confirmed our hypothesis that new maize inbred lines and hybrids derived from them had a dominant property of an efficient photosynthetic model. This property is successfully used in breeding programmes, modern technologies of the seed, and commercial maize production. This statement is supported by the results displayed on the erect position of the top leaves of new maize inbred lines and photosynthetic and florescence parameters: the change of the delayed chlorophyll fluorescence intensity during its course and dynamics, the Arrhenius criterion for the determination of critical temperatures (phase transition temperatures) and the activation energies, as a measure of conformational changes in chloroplasts and the thylakoid membrane. Furthermore, a grain structure including its physical and chemical parameters of new maize inbred lines and hybrids was analysed in the present study. In addition, relevant breeding, seed production and technological traits, properties and parameters of new maize inbred lines and maize hybrids were observed in the present study. The overall presented results show that properties of new inbred lines and maize hybrids are based on the nature of conformational and functional changes that occur in their chloroplasts and thylakoid membranes, as well as, on progressive effects in modern breeding, contemporary hybrid seed production, and the commercial maize production.
AB  - Proučavane su dve nove inbred linije kukuruza: ZPPL 218 i ZPPL 318 i sa njima stvoreni perspektivni hibridi ZP 600, ZP 606 i ZP 666 za koje je dokazano da poseduju dominantno svojstvo efikasnog fotosintetičnog modela što se uspešno koristi u oplemenjivanju, savremenim tehnologijama za proizvodnju hibridnog semena i merkantilnog kukuruza. Ovoj konstataciji idu u prilog izloženi rezultati o uspravnom položaju vršnih listova novih inbred linija kukuruza i o fotosintetično-fluorescentnim pokazateljima: promeni intenziteta zakasnele fluorescencije hlorofila u njenom toku i dinamici, Arenijusovom kriterijumu za određivanje kritičnih temperatura (temperature faznih prelaza) i o energiji aktivacije kao meri strukturnih promena u hloroplastima i tilakoidnoj membrani. U radu se analizira struktura zrna uključujući i njegove fizičke i hemijske pokazatelje novih inbred linija i hibrida kukuruza. Isto tako, u radu se razmatraju relevantna selekcionarska, semenarska i tehnološka svojstva, karakteristike i parametri novih inbred linija i hibrida kukuruza. Ukupno izloženi rezultati pokazuju da su svojstva novih inbred linija i hibrida kukuruza zasnovana na prirodi strukturnih i funkcionalnih promena, koje se odigravaju u hloroplastima i tilakoidnoj membrani kao i na progresivnim efektima u modernom oplemenjivanju, savremenoj proizvodnji hibridnog semena i merkantilnog kukuruza.

The effect of super-hydro-grow polymer on soil moisture, nitrogen status and maize growth

AB  - Irrigation, as a major solution to drought, is connected with irreversible nitrogen losses due to leaching. Improvement of soil management through the application of biodegradable polymers, as soil water bearers, gives a new approach in drought control. Trials were performed to examine the influence of Super-Hydro-Grow polymer (SHG), a starch-based polymer, on maize growth and grain yield, compared with rain-fed and irrigation cropping practices. The climatic conditions during 2006 were moderate compared to the ones in 2007, which was a relatively dry year. The positive impact of the polymer on plant growth was observed through the significant increases in the fresh matter of the shoots and grain yield, compared to the other treatments. In addition to maintaining soil moisture (as its main function) during the vegetative period, the polymer suppressed soil N deprivation making it advantageous cropping practice. Furthermore, the extended effect of the SHG polymer on the subsequent rotational crops should be considered.

Effect of sowing time on yield of ZP maize hybrids

AB  - These experiments were conducted in the period 2003-2008 in Zemun Polje. Five hybrids were investigated in six sowing dates - on April 5th (Sd1), 15th (Sd2) and 25th (Sd3), and on May 5th (Sd4), 15th (Sd5) and 25th (Sd6). Three unfavorable years for the maize production were distinguished in this period: 2003 with 210.0 mm, 2007 with 290.1 mm and 2008 with 224.6 mm of precipitation; 2005 was moderately favorable, with 387.4 mm of precipitation. Two years were favorable for the maize production, both in terms of precipitation amounts and distribution: 2004 with 427.6 mm and 2006 with 417.1 mm. The highest average yield was achieved in Sd2 (11.21 t/ha - 100%). On the other April sowing dates, average yield was lower: on Sd1 - 11.04 t/ha (98.48%), on Sd3 - 10.97 (97.86%). The effects of the May sowing dates were significantly lower comparing with the Sd2: Sd4 - 10.53 t/ha (93.93%), Sd5 - 10.46 t/ha (93.31%) and Sd6 - 9.71 t/ha (86.62%). The highest yielding hybrid was ZP 684 (11.16 t/ha). These results doubtlessly point to the mid April sowing date as an optimum for maize in Serbia.
AB  - Vreme setve spada u faktore koji imaju značajan uticaj na nivo prinosa kukuruza. Optimalan rok setve bi se mogao definisati kao vreme setve kojim se obezbeđuje nicanje kukuruza u najpovoljnijem trenutku kako bi se maksimalno iskoristili uslovi vegetacionog perioda i formirao što veći prinos. Ova ispitivanja obavljena su u periodu od 2003. do 2008. godine u Zemun Polju. Ispitivano je pet hibrida u šest rokova setve: tri u aprilu (5., 15. i 25.) i tri u maju (5., 15. i 25.). U toku ispitivanja, tri godine su bile nepovoljne za proizvodnju kukuruza: 2003. sa 210,0 mm padavina, 2007. sa 290,1 mm i 2008. sa 224,6 mm. Jedna godina (2005) je imala umereno povoljne uslove - 387,4 mm padavina. Dve godine su bile povoljne u smislu količine i rasporeda padavina: 2004 sa 427,6 mm i 2006. sa 417,1 mm. Najviši prinos ostvaren je pri setvi kukuruza 15. aprila (11,21 t/ha), koji je uzet kao referentna vrednost (100,00%). U ostalim rokovima setve u aprilu prinos je bio niži: Sd1 11,04 t/ha (98,48%), Sd3 10,97 t/ha (97,86%). Setvom u maju, ostvareni su statistički veoma značajno niži prinosi u odnosu na referentnu vrednost: Sd4 - 10,53 t/ha (93,93%), Sd5 - 10,46 t/ha (93,31%) i Sd6 - 9,71 t/ha (86,62%). Hibrid ZP 684 imao je najviši prosečan prinos (11,16 t/ha), dok su svi ostali prinosi bili niži: ZP 680 za 8,23%, ZP 434 za 7,71%, ZP 580 za 4,75% i ZP 578 za 3,05%. Ove činjenice nedvosmisleno ukazuju da je setva kukuruza u aprilu, a posebno polovinom ovog meseca, najpovoljniji rok setve u Srbiji.

Long term effects of different soil tillage systems on maize (Zea mays L.) yields

AB  - The effects of three tillage systems: no-tillage (NT), reduced tillage (RT) and conventional tillage (CT), and three levels of fertilization (0, 258 and 516 kg/ha NPK (58: 18: 24)), on the maize yield during ten years (1999-2008) were analyzed on the chernozem soil type in Zemun Polje, Serbia. Statistical analyses showed significant effects of all three factors i.e., year, soil tillage and amount of fertilizers, and their interactions on the maize yield. The ten-year averages showed that the highest yields were observed with CT (10.61 t/ha), while the averages with RT and NT were lower (8.99 t/ha and 6.85 t/ha, respectively). The results of the influence of the amount of the applied fertilizers on maize yield showed that the lowest yield was in the zero level of fertilization 7.71 t/ha, while the yield was raised when the 258 kg/ha and 516 kg/ha NPK were applied (9.18 t/ha and 9.56 t/ha, respectively). Analyzing the influence of the soil tillage systems on maize production with respect to the amounts of applied fertilizers, this research revealed the benefits of CT under the presented agroecological conditions, irrespective of the level of applied fertilizer.

Possible toxicity and tolerance patterns towards post-emergence herbicides in maize inbred lines

AB  - High weed infestation of seed crops often makes various measures that should be performed at the optimum time difficult, hence post-emergence herbicides have become the usual way of weed control in maize seed crops. The introduction of sulfonylurea herbicides has resulted in a higher susceptibility in maize inbreds. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of six post-emergence herbicides, including sulfonylurea herbicides, on the contents of fresh matter, soluble proteins, free thiolic groups and total phenolics in one-month-old plants, as well as on the grain yield of 15 commercial ZP maize inbred lines. The obtained results show that inbred plants have a whole range of responses to herbicide application. The changes in content of phenolics did not vary over a broad range among the applied herbicides; they followed mainly the level observed in control plants. However, greater variations between the results were obtained for the content of free thiolics, which are defenders against oxidative attack. The overall influence of herbicides could be considered as a decrease in the content of thiolics. Most of the applied herbicides expressed temporary stress, evidenced by a decrease in the fresh matter of the shoots, without affecting of yield at the end of vegetation. This could be connected to recovery mechanisms that include the activity of antioxidants, primarily of thiolics.

Introduction of the interdependence between the glutathione half-cell reduction potential and thermodynamic parameters during accelerated aging of maize seeds

AB  - Two maize hybrids with a different ability to maintain seed germination were examined during the course of accelerated aging (AA). Initially, the similar seed reduction potential of the GSSG/2GSH half-cell increased in H1 (dent hybrid) without influencing the seed germination ability up to the 6th day of AA, while in H2 (sweet corn hybrid), it was not changed up to the 6th day of AA but with a significant later loss of seed germination ability. During the AA course, the amount of free thiol decreased in H1 and increased in H2. Irrespective of the continual increase of the differential Gibbs energy during AA, the characteristics of the examined hybrids are possibly connected to the different metabolic pathways of the seeds: H1 is characterized by higher entropy and positive enthalpy values, while H2 had negative entropy values and a decreasing trend of enthalpy, indicating a shift of the system from a relatively ordered to a disordered state. The different types of nanomolecular switches, resulting in a faster decrease of GSH in the H2 than in the H1 hybrids, indicate that a combination of the GSSG/2GSH half-cell potential and thermodynamics could be a useful tool to quantify plant stress.
AB  - Proučavano je ubrzano starenje semena dva hibrida kukuruza koja imaju drugačiju sposobnost očuvanja klijavosti. Sličan početni redukcioni potencijal GSSG/2GSH para je kod H1(zuban) rastao bez uticaja na sposobnost klijanja do šestog dana ubrzanog starenja, dok se kod H2 (šećerac) nije menjao do šestog dana starenja, uz kasniji značajan pad klijavosti. Količina PSH se smanjivala kod H1, dok je rasla kod H2 tokom tretmana starenja. Bez obzira na kontinuiran pad slobodne energije tokom ubrzanog starenja, osobine semena ispitivanih hibrida su možda bile vezane za drugačije metaboličke puteve: H1 karakteriše visoka entropija i pozitivne vrednosti entalpije, dok je za H2 karakteristična relativno niska entropija, uz negativne vrednosti entalpije, ukazujući na pomeranje sistema iz relativno uređenog u neuređeno stanje. Drugačiji tipovi nanomolekulskih prekidača, utičući na brži pad GSH kod H2 u odnosu na H1, ističu da se kombinacija GSSG/2GSH ćelijskog potencijala i termodinamike mogu koristiti pri kvantifikaciji biljnog stresa.

Significant genetic properties of maize inbred lines: A good basis for progress in breeding

AB  - This study conforms the hypothesis that there are elite maize inbred lines and hybrids with erect top leaves, which have a dominant property of an efficient photosynthetic and fluorescent model, that is successfully used in modern breeding programmes and the production of hybrid seed and commercial maize. This statement is supported by the displayed results on the erect position of the top leaves, the dynamics of grain dry-down during the maturation period and photosynthetic and florescence parameters: the temperature dependence of the delayed chlorophyll fluorescence intensity, the Arrhenius criterion for the determination of critical temperatures (phase transition temperatures) and the activation energies. The presented results show that properties of observed maize inbreeds and their hybrids are based on the nature of conformational and functional changes that occur in their thylakoid membranes and other chemical structures of tissues of grain and intact leaves, as well as, on positive effects in maize breeding.
AB  - U ovom radu potvrđuje se naša hipoteza da postoje elitne inbred linije kukuruza sa uspravnim položajem vršnih listova koje poseduju dominantno svojstvo efikasnog fotosintetično-fluorescentnog modela, te da se, kao takve, mogu uspešno koristiti u savremenim programima oplemenjivanja i proizvodnje hibridnog semena kukuruza. Ovoj konstataciji idu u prilog izloženi rezultati o uspravnom položaju vršnih listova prestižnih linija kukuruza, dinamici otpuštanja vode iz zrna u periodu sazrevanja i o fotosintetično-fluorescentnim pokazateljima: temperaturnoj zavisnosti intenziteta zakasnele fluorescencije hlorofila, Arenijusovom kriterijumu za određivanje kritičnih temperatura (temperature faznih prelaza) i o energiji aktivacije. Ukupno izloženi rezultati pokazuju da su svojstva prestižnih inbred linija kukuruza zasnovana na prirodi strukturnih i funkcionalnih promena, koje se odigravaju u njihovim tilakoidnim membranama i drugim hemijskim strukturama tkiva intaktnog lista i zrna, kao i na pozitivnim efektima u oplemenjivanju kukuruza.

The influence of herbicides on changes of the phytic and the inorganic phosphorus during starting growth of maize inbred lines

AB  - The specific sowing structure of maize seed crops requires special attention to weed management. The maize inbred lines are susceptible to a range of stress factors, so as the herbicide application could introduce temporary or permanent stress, dependently on genotype susceptibility and agro-meteorological conditions. The aim of experiment was to investigate the influence of post-emergence herbicides on content of the phytic and inorganic phosphorus 48 hours after herbicide application (4-6 leaves phase) and then 21 days after application, as well as on the grain yield of 10 ZP maize inbreds. The difference in phytic P content after 21 days was followed by yield alterations in the majority of inbreds. Decrease of the phytic P influenced by herbicides, in relation to control, 48 hours and particularly 21 days after application, could be tied to phytate positive impact to stress tolerance, owing to its antioxidative activity; so as, at the most of inbreds was observed permanent stress, with no significant influence on grain yield. Meanwhile, during the period of 21 days after herbicide application, the inorganic P content correlated with phytic P content, without significant alterations of grain yield.
AB  - U semenskim usevima kukuruza, zbog specifične strukture setve se posebna pažnja obraća na kontrolu korova. Samooplodne linije kukruza su inače osetljive prema brojnim stresnim faktorima. Primena herbicida može dovesti do pojave privremenog ili permanentnog stresa, zavisno od osetljivosti genotipa i agro-meteoroloških uslova. Cilj eksperimenta je bio da se ispita uticaj herbicida koji se primenjuju nakon nicanja kukuruza, na sadržaj fitinskog i neorganskog fosfora 48 sati nakon aplikacije herbicida (u fazi 4-6 listova), a potom nakon 21 dana, kao i na prinos zrna 10 komercijalnih ZP linija kukuruza. Razliku u sadržaju fitinskog P nakon 21 dana od tretiranja pratila je promena prinosa kod većine linija. Takođe, smanjenje sadržaja fitinskog P pod uticajem herbicida u odnosu na kontrolu, 48 sati nakon tretiranja, a posebno nakon 21 dana bi moglo biti vezano za pozitivnu ulogu fitata u toleratnosti na stres, zahvaljujući njegovoj antioksidativnoj aktivnosti, tako da je kod većine tretiranih linija bio zabeležen privremeni stres, bez značajnijeg uticaja na prinos. Sa druge strane, sadržaj neorganskog fosfora u periodu do 21 dana od momenta tretiranja herbicidima u većem stepenu je bio u korelaciji sa sadržajem fitinskog fosfora, ne utičući značajnije na formiranje prinosa.

AB  - The arrangement pattern, i.e. shape and size of vegetative space available to growing plants influences crop-weed competitive interaction and weed abundance. Most researches show that growing row crops such as maize, soybean, sunflower etc., with narrow row space, has as a result lower weed infestation and better yield parameters. In this study the effects of the maize vegetative space, which are achieved with combination of different row spaces and spaces between plants in the row, on the weed distribution and fresh matter and some morphological and productive parameters of maize were investigated. The crop density was the same for all arrangement patterns and herbicide application was included with three levels: full and half of the recommended dose and control without herbicide application. In all three years of investigation, the weed fresh matter declined with decreasing row spaces and was, on average, the lowest for the narrower row space and herbicide application at recommended doses (38,6; 12,8 and 351,1 g m-2). In such arrangement pattern of maize plants, significant influence on the fresh matter of D. stramonium, S. nigrum and A. retroflexus, was achieved. Herbicide application at half of the recommended dose also significantly influenced level of weediness compared to untreated control. The size of maize vegetation space significantly influenced grain yield in 2005 and 2006, otherwise, the herbicide application had a significant influence on maize yield in all years. Grain yield did not differ significantly according to LSD-test between treatments with full and half rate of herbicides.
AB  - Prostorni raspored odnosno oblik i veličina vegetacionog prostora kojim raspolažu gajene biljke značajno utiče na kompeticijske interakcije između useva i korova a time i na zastupljenost korova. Rezultati većine istraživanja su pokazali da gajenje širokoredih useva kao što su kukuruz, soja, suncokret i dr. sa smanjenim međurednim rastojanjem, utiče na smanjenje zakorovljenosti ali i na parametre rodnosti. U radu je ispitivan uticaj veličine vegetacionog prostora koji je ostvaren kombinovanjem međurednog razmaka i razmaka između biljaka u redu u okviru iste gustine, u uslovima primene herbicida u preporučenim i smanjenim količinama, na zastupljenost pojedinih vrsta korova i njihovu biomasu kao i na neke morfološke i produktivne osobine kukuruza. Najmanja ukupna sveža masa korova je u sve tri godine, utvrđena na varijanti sa najmanjim međurednim rastojanjem i primenjenom kombinacijom herbicida izoksaflutol+acetohlor u preporučenoj količini (38,6; 12,8 i 351,1 g m-2). U takvom obliku vegetacionog prostora, značajno je smanjenja sveža masa vrsta D. stramonium, S. nigrum i A. retroflexus. Primena herbicida u polovini preporučene količine takođe je značajno smanjila nivo zakorovljenosti u poređenju sa netretiranom kontrolom. Veličina vegetacionog prostora značajno je uticala na prinos zrna kukuruza u 2005. i 2006. godini, dok je količina primenjenih herbicida vrlo značajno uticala na visinu prinosa u svim godinama. Međusobna poređenja visine prinosa između varijanti sa primenom herbicida u preporučenoj i polovini preporučene količine, na osnovu LSD-testa, nisu pokazale značajne razlike.

AB  - This study confirms the hypothesis that there are new elite maize inbred lines and prospective hybrids, which have a dominant property of an efficient photosynthetic model that is successfully used in breeding programmes, modern technologies of the seed and commercial maize production. This statement is supported by the displayed results on the erect position of the top leaves of new maize inbred lines and photosynthetic and florescence parameters: the change of the delayed chlorophyll fluorescence intensity during its course and dynamics, the Arrhenius criterion for the determination of critical temperatures (phase transition temperatures) and the activation energies, as a measure of conformational changes in chloroplasts the thylakoid membrane. Furthermore, a grain structure, including its physical and chemical parameters, of new maize inbred lines was analysed in the present study. Also, relevant breeding, seed production and technological traits, properties and parameters of new inbred lines and prospective maize hybrids were observed in the present study. The presented results show that properties of new inbred lines and prospective maize hybrids are based on the nature of conformational and functional changes that occur in their chloroplasts and thylakoid membranes, as well as, on progressive effects in maize breeding, modern hybrid seed production and the commercial maize production.
AB  - U ovom radu vršena su proučavanja novih elitnih inbred linija kukuruza: ZPPL 218 i ZPPL 318 i perspektivnih hibrida kukuruza ZP 600, ZP 606 i ZP 666 stvorenih iz njih. Pokazano je da se potvrđuje naša hipoteza da nove elitne inbred linije i perspektivni hibridi kukuruza poseduju dominantno svojstvo efikasnog fotosintetičnog modela što se uspešno koristi u oplemenjivanju, savremenim tehnologijama proizvodnje hibridnog semena i merkantilnog kukuruza. Ovoj konstataciji idu u prilog izloženi rezultati o uspravnom položaju vršnih listova novih inbred linija kukuruza i o fotosintetički-fluorescentnim pokazateljima: promeni intenziteta zakasnele fluorescencije hlorofila u njenom toku i dinamici, Arenijusovom kriterijumu za određivanje kritičnih temperature (temperature faznih prelaza) i o energiji aktivacije kao meri strukturnih promena u hloroplastima i tilakoidnoj membrani. U radu se analiziraju struktura zrna uključujući i njegove fizičke i hemijske pokazatelje novih inbred linija kukuruza. Isto tako, u radu se razmatraju relevantna selekcionarska, semenarska i tehnološka svojstva, karakteristike i parametri novih inbred linija i perspektivnih hibrida kukuruza. Ukupno izloženi rezultati pokazuju da su svojstva novih inbred linija i perspektivnih hibrida kukuruza, zasnovana na prirodi strukturnih i funkcionalnih promena koje se odigravaju u hloroplastima i tilakoidnim membranama, kao i na progresivnim efektima u oplemenjivanju, savremenoj proizvodnji hibridnog semena i merkatilnog kukuruza.

AB  - This paper presents the analysis of results obtained during long- term studies on the response of maize inbred lines to herbicides. Under the agroecological conditions of Zemun Polje the response (reaction of maize inbred lines to herbicides of different classes was investigated. Biological tests were performed and some agronomic, morphological, physiological and biochemical parameters were determined when the response of maize inbred lines to herbicides was estimated. The use of active ingredients of herbicides from triazine, acetanilide, thiocarbamate to new chemical groups (sulfonylurea etc.), have been resulted in changes in weed suppression and susceptibility of inbred lines. Obtained results show that effects of herbicides on susceptible maize genotypes can be different: they can slowdown the growth and development and affect the plant height; they can also affect the stages of the tassel and ear development and at the end they can reduced grain yield of the tested inbreds. Numerous studies confirmed the existence of differences in susceptibility level of maize genotypes in relation to herbicides. According to gained results the recommendations for growers are made on the possibility of the application of new herbicides in the hybrid seed production.
AB  - U radu se, na osnovu višegodišnjih ispitivanja, daje analiza rezultata koji se odnose na reakciju linija kukuruza prema herbicidima. U višegodišnjem periodu u uslovima Zemun Polja ispitivana je reakcija samooplodnih linija kukuruza u odnosu na herbicide raznih grupa, primenjenih u raznim rokovima. Za ocenu reakcije biljaka prema herbicidima korišćeni su razni biološki testovi i mereni različiti pokazatelji: agronomski, morfološki i fiziološko - biohemijski. Sa promenom aktivnih materija koje su se koristile u usevima kukuruza od triazina, acetanilida, tiokarbamata do uvođenja novih hemijskih grupa (sulfonilurea i dr.), menjali su se i problemi u vezi suzbijanjem korova i osetljivošću samooplodnih linija kukuruza. Rezultati istraživanja pokazuju da herbicidi kod osetljivih genotipova kukuruza mogu da uspore rastenje, deluju na visinu biljaka, utiču na proticanje etapa razvića metlice i klipa i na kraju smanje prinos zrna ispitivanih linija. Brojnim istraživanjima potvrđeno je postojanje razlika u nivou osetljivosti raznih genotipova kukuruza u odnosu na herbicide. Na osnovu dobijenih rezultata se daju preporuke proizvođačima o mogućnosti primene novog herbicida u proizvodnji hibridnog semena.

Obtained results show that effects of herbicides on susceptible maize genotypes can be different: they can slowdown the growth and development and affect the plant height; they can also affect the stages of the tassel and ear development and at the end they can reduced grain yield of the tested inbreds. Numerous studies confirmed the existence of differences in susceptibility level of maize genotypes in relation to herbicides. According to gained results the recommendations for growers are made on the possibility of the application of new herbicides in the hybrid seed production., U radu se, na osnovu višegodišnjih ispitivanja, daje analiza rezultata koji se odnose na reakciju linija kukuruza prema herbicidima. U višegodišnjem periodu u uslovima Zemun Polja ispitivana je reakcija samooplodnih linija kukuruza u odnosu na herbicide raznih grupa, primenjenih u raznim rokovima. Za ocenu reakcije biljaka prema herbicidima korišćeni su razni biološki testovi i mereni različiti pokazatelji: agronomski, morfološki i fiziološko - biohemijski. Sa promenom aktivnih materija koje su se koristile u usevima kukuruza od triazina, acetanilida, tiokarbamata do uvođenja novih hemijskih grupa (sulfonilurea i dr.), menjali su se i problemi u vezi suzbijanjem korova i osetljivošću samooplodnih linija kukuruza. Rezultati istraživanja pokazuju da herbicidi kod osetljivih genotipova kukuruza mogu da uspore rastenje, deluju na visinu biljaka, utiču na proticanje etapa razvića metlice i klipa i na kraju smanje prinos zrna ispitivanih linija. Brojnim istraživanjima potvrđeno je postojanje razlika u nivou osetljivosti raznih genotipova kukuruza u odnosu na herbicide. Na osnovu dobijenih rezultata se daju preporuke proizvođačima o mogućnosti primene novog herbicida u proizvodnji hibridnog semena.",

Significant biophysical and genetic properties of maize inbred lines and hybrids with erect top leaves

AB  - This study confirms the hypothesis that there are elite maize inbred lines and hybrids with erect top leaves, which have a dominant property of an efficient photosynthetic and fluorescent model that is successfully used in modern breeding programmes and the production hybrid seed and commercial maize. This statement is supported by the displayed results on the erect top leaves, the dynamics of grain dry-down during the maturation period and photosynthetic and florescence parameters: the temperature dependence of the delayed chlorophyll fluorescence intensity, the Arrhenius criterion for the determination of critical temperatures (phase transition temperatures) and the activation energies. The presented results show that properties of observed maize inbreds and their hybrids are based on the nature of conformational and functional changes that occur in their thylakoid membranes and other chemical tissues structures of grain and intact leaves, as well as, on positive effects in maize breeding. Moreover, other relevant significant breeding and seed production properties (commercial maize quality over grain structure, physical and chemical parameters) of maize inbred lines and their hybrids were analyzed in the present study.
AB  - Proučavane su četiri prestižne inbred linije kukuruza sa uspravnim položajem vršnih listova: ZPPL 16, ZPPL 218, ZPPL 62 i ZPPL 233. Ove linije su, kao majka ili otac, uključene u stvaranje više od 50 hibrida kukuruza. U tekućem srednjeročnom periodu široku komercijalnu primenu našao je veći broj hibrida kukuruza: ZP 341, ZP 360, ZP 434, ZP 578, ZP 606, ZP 677, ZP 684 i drugi. U ovom radu analizirani su samo reprezentativni hibridi kukuruza: ZP 341 (FAO 300), ZP 434 (FAO 400), ZP 578 (FAO 500) i ZP 684 (FAO 600). Ovim radom potvrđuje se naša hipoteza da postoje elitne inbred linije i hibridi kukuruza sa uspravnim položajem vršnih listova, koji poseduju dominantno svojstvo efikasnog fotosintetično-fluorescentnog modela i uspešno se koriste u savremenim programima oplemenjivanja, proizvodnji hibridnog semena i merkantilnog kukuruza. Ovaj zaključak dobijen je uz primenu neinvazivnog fotosintetično-fluorescentnog metoda pogodnog za ocenu efikasnosti fotomodela. Dobijene fotosintetične karakteristike proučavanih prestižnih inbred linija kukuruza sa uspravnim položajem vršnih listova zasnovane su na efektima i prirodi promena zakasnele fluorescencije hlorofila koje se odigravaju u njihovim tilakoidnim membranama, čiji su pokazatelji temperaturna zavisnost intenziteta zakasnele fluorescencije hlorofila, Arenijusov kriterijum za utvrđivanje kritičnih temperatura (temperature faznih prelaza) u tilakoidnim membranama i energije aktivacije. Izloženi rezultati o veličini ugla između pravca prostiranja prvog lista iznad klipa i pravca prostiranja stabljike, kao i rezultati o dinamici oslobađanja vode iz zrna u periodu njegovog sazrevanja dodatno pokazuju da su svojstva proučavanih inbred linija kukuruza sa uspravnim položajem vršnih listova pogodni kriterijumi za egzaktniji, racionalniji i brži proces oplemenjivanja. Takođe su analizirana i druga relevantna selekciona i semenarska svojstva proučavanih prestižnih inbred linija i hibrida kukuruza (kvalitet merkantilnog kukuruza preko strukture zrna, fizičkih i hemijskih parametara).

AB  - This study conforms the hypothesis that there are elite maize inbred lines with erect top leaves that have a property of an efficient photosynthetic model and that as such are successfully used in the processes of breeding in which the number of plants is increased per area unit (plant density). This proof was established by the application of non- invasive photosynthetic-fluorescence method suitable for the evaluation of the efficiency of the photosynthetic model. The obtained photosynthetic and fluorescence properties of observed prestigious maize inbred lines with the erect top leaves are based on the effects and the nature of changes in chlorophyll fluorescence occurring in their thylakoid membranes. Their principal parameters are temperature dependence of the chlorophyll delayed fluorescence intensity, the Arrhenius plot for the determination of the phase transition in thylakoid membranes and the estimated activation energies. The displayed results on the size of an angle between the direction of the propagation of the above-ear leaf and the direction of the stalk propagation, as well as, results on the dynamics of grain dry-down during the maturation period, additionally indicate that traits of observed maize inbred lines with erect top leaves are the prominent base for more exact, rational and faster proceeding of current processes of breeding.

AB  - Growing competitive crops is an important component of the integrated weed management system, although selection of genotypes with the increased competitive ability is rather difficult. The possibility of reducing weed infestation by increasing the competitive activity of crops by growing genotypes, i.e. hybrids that better 'endure' a greater density, depends on the FAO maturity group and morphological properties of a genotype, environmental conditions and the growing regions. The competition between maize and weeds varies over the modified crop arrangement pattern. The greatest weed infestation is recorded in the crops of the sparse-spaced plants, while the height and the weight of weeds are significantly lower in closely-spaced plants. The height, growth intensity in the initial stages, embryo vigour and leaf area of the plant are important for a greater competitive ability, as they are components of competitive effects of crops on weeds. Weed infestation and maize hybrids yielding were studied in dependence on the hybrids arrangement pattern and the application of herbicides. Obtained results show statistically significant differences in the weed fresh weight, but only in certain years and in accordance with differences in the height and the leaf area of ZP maize hybrids.
AB  - Gajenje kompetitivnijih useva je važna komponenta integralnog sistema suzbijanja korova, iako je selekcija genotipova sa povećanom kompetitivnom sposobnošću dosta teška. Mogućnost smanjenja zakorovljenosti na osnovu povećanja kompetitivnog delovanja useva gajenjem genotipova tj. hibrida koji bolje 'podnose' veću gustinu, zavisi od FAO grupe zrenja i morfoloških karakteristika genotipa, uslova spoljašnje sredine i područja gajenja. Kompeticija između kukuruza i korova se menja sa promenom gustine i rasporeda gajenih biljaka. Najzakorovljeniji su usevi retkog sklopa, dok su visina i masa korova u usevima gustog sklopa znatno niže. Za veću kompetitivnost genotipa kukuruza u odnosu na korove važni su visina, intenzitet rastenja u početnim fazama, vigor klijanaca i lisna površina biljke, koje su komponente konkurentskog delovanja useva na korove. U radu je ispitivana zakorovljenost i produktivnost različitih hibrida kukuruza u zavisnosti od prostornog rasporeda u kome su gajeni i primene herbicida. Rezultati pokazuju da su pri gajenju ispitivanih genotipova kukuruza utvrđene statistički značajne razlike u svežoj masi korova, ali samo u pojedinim godinama, u skladu sa razlikama u visini i lisnoj površini ZP hibrida.

abstract = "Growing competitive crops is an important component of the integrated weed management system, although selection of genotypes with the increased competitive ability is rather difficult. The possibility of reducing weed infestation by increasing the competitive activity of crops by growing genotypes, i.e. hybrids that better 'endure' a greater density, depends on the FAO maturity group and morphological properties of a genotype, environmental conditions and the growing regions. The competition between maize and weeds varies over the modified crop arrangement pattern. The greatest weed infestation is recorded in the crops of the sparse-spaced plants, while the height and the weight of weeds are significantly lower in closely-spaced plants. The height, growth intensity in the initial stages, embryo vigour and leaf area of the plant are important for a greater competitive ability, as they are components of competitive effects of crops on weeds. Weed infestation and maize hybrids yielding were studied in dependence on the hybrids arrangement pattern and the application of herbicides. Obtained results show statistically significant differences in the weed fresh weight, but only in certain years and in accordance with differences in the height and the leaf area of ZP maize hybrids., Gajenje kompetitivnijih useva je važna komponenta integralnog sistema suzbijanja korova, iako je selekcija genotipova sa povećanom kompetitivnom sposobnošću dosta teška. Mogućnost smanjenja zakorovljenosti na osnovu povećanja kompetitivnog delovanja useva gajenjem genotipova tj. hibrida koji bolje 'podnose' veću gustinu, zavisi od FAO grupe zrenja i morfoloških karakteristika genotipa, uslova spoljašnje sredine i područja gajenja. Kompeticija između kukuruza i korova se menja sa promenom gustine i rasporeda gajenih biljaka. Najzakorovljeniji su usevi retkog sklopa, dok su visina i masa korova u usevima gustog sklopa znatno niže. Za veću kompetitivnost genotipa kukuruza u odnosu na korove važni su visina, intenzitet rastenja u početnim fazama, vigor klijanaca i lisna površina biljke, koje su komponente konkurentskog delovanja useva na korove. U radu je ispitivana zakorovljenost i produktivnost različitih hibrida kukuruza u zavisnosti od prostornog rasporeda u kome su gajeni i primene herbicida. Rezultati pokazuju da su pri gajenju ispitivanih genotipova kukuruza utvrđene statistički značajne razlike u svežoj masi korova, ali samo u pojedinim godinama, u skladu sa razlikama u visini i lisnoj površini ZP hibrida.",

Dominant properties of the efficient photosynthetic-fluorescence model in breeding and contemporary production of high-quality commercial maize

AB  - The following three prestigious maize inbred lines with erect top leaves: ZPPL 16, ZPPL 218 and ZPPL 62 were observed in this study. Each of these inbreds, either as a female or a male component, was included into the development of over 45 maize hybrids. However, maize hybrids ZP 431, ZP 434, ZP 578 and ZP 684 are widely commercially used in this medium-term period. This study conforms the hypothesis that there are elite maize inbred lines with erect top leaves and hybrids derived from them that have a dominant property of an efficient photosynthetic-fluorescence model that is successfully used in breeding and production technologies of hybrid seed and commercial maize. The presented results on the position of top leaves, increased density, dynamics of grain dry down, quality of hybrid and commercial maize and on photosynthetic and fluorescence parameters: temperature dependence on the chlorophyll delayed fluorescence intensity, Arrhenius plot for the determination of critical temperatures (phase transition temperatures) and activation energies, show that the properties of observed inbred lines and their maize hybrids are based on positive effects and the nature of structural and functional changes that occur in their thylakoid membranes and other chemical structures of grain and leaf tissues. Furthermore, other relevant breeding and seed production properties of observed prestigious maize inbred lines and hybrids derived from them were analyzed (dependence of yields on densities and quality of commercial maize on the structure of grain and physical and chemical properties).
AB  - U ovom radu potvrđuje se naša hipoteza da postoje elitne samooplodne linije i sa njima stvoreni hibridi kukuruza, sa uspravnim položajem vršnih listova, koje poseduju dominantno svojstvo efikasnog fotosintetično-fluorescentnog modela što se uspešno koristi u oplemenjivanju, savremenim tehnologijama proizvodnje hibridnog semena i merkatilnog kukuruza. Izloženi rezultati o uspravnom položaju vršnih listova, povećanoj gustini, dinamici otpuštanja vode iz zrna u periodu sazrevanja, kvalitetu semena hibridnog i merkantilnog kukuruza i o fotosintetično-fluorescentnim pokazateljima: temperaturnoj zavisnosti intenziteta zakasnele fluorescencije hlorofila, Arenijusovom kriterijumu za određivanje kritičnih temperatura (temperature faznih prelaza) i energija aktivacije, pokazuju da su svojstva proučavanih linija i njihovih hibrida kukuruza zasnovana na pozitivnim efektima i prirodi strukturnih i funkcionalnih promena, koje se odigravaju u njihovim tilakoidnim membranama i drugim hemijskim strukturama tkiva zrna i lista. Weed suppression in maize seed production: Effects of post-emergence herbicides

AB  - Widespread distribution of weeds in seed maize crops has resulted in frequent application of postemergence herbicides. Herbicides used in hybrid crops are also used in maize seed production, including sulphonylurea herbicides and other new compounds for suppression of annual and perennial weeds. Due to differences in susceptibility of maize inbred lines, none of these herbicides has been approved for maize hybrid seed production. On the other hand, due to an increase in weed infestation, they are used in practice. Faster or slower growth of crops and weeds, as well as herbicide uptake, generally depend on meteorological conditions (temperatures and precipitation sums). As knowledge of the different responses of maize inbred lines to herbicides is important to maize breeders, seed producers and weed scientists, we have investigated the effects of new herbicides on maize inbreds over a number of years. Over the 2004-2007 period, the response of maize inbred lines to post-emergence herbicides of recently produced groups was monitored at Zemun Polje. A total of 40 PL and KL inbreds were studied. The inbred PL 38 stands out as the most susceptible inbred. Such studies are important for making recommendations on possible application of new herbicides for specific hybrid combinations.
AB  - Suzbijanje korova primenom herbicida je važna komponenta u tehnološkom postupku proizvodnje semena hibridnog kukuruza. Primenjuju se uglavnom iste kombinacije herbicida kao i u hibridnom usevu. Međutim, specifični agroekološki uslovi u semenskim usevima dovode do niza problema. Među njima su najvažniji osetljivost samooplodnih linija kukuruza na prisustvo korova i reakcija na delovanje herbicida. Kako je primena herbicida u semenskim usevima neophodna, u radu se, na osnovu rezultata višegodišnjih ispitivanja, daje analiza problema sa kojima se srećemo pri primeni herbicida u toku vegetacije u semenskim usevima kukuruza. Takođe je u periodu 2004-2007. godine, u uslovima Zemun Polja, ispitivana reakcija samooplodnih linija kukuruza u odnosu na herbicide novijih grupa namenjenih za primenu u toku vegetacije.

AB  - Relations (interactions) between plants can be favourable, adverse or neutral. Competition is the most widespread form of adverse interaction in agrophytocoenoses. One generally accepted definition of competition is: 'Mutual confrontation of organisms (species, populations) on an occasion of usage of natural resources under conditions of their deficit'. Competition is a dynamic process and besides interspecific competition (crop-weed) there always occurs intraspecific competition (crop-crop or weed-weed). The competitive ability of plants can be expressed in the following two ways: 1) a crop ability to competitively affect weeds by reducing their biomass and seed production and 2) a crop ability to tolerate competitive activities of weeds resulting at the same time in high yields. Competition, as the most common interaction between a crop and a weed, depends on many factors and can be widely applied within weed control systems in practice. Weed control measures are one of natural or alternative methods of suppression of weed distribution as the interest in control measures based on reduced application of herbicides has increased during the last decade. The application of cultivation measures by which a crop-to-weed interaction is affected by inclusion of more competitive genotypes, crop densities, plant spatial patterns, ratios and locations of mineral fertiliser application, etc., has opened a new field of research of the crop-to-weed interaction. The intensity of crop competitive activities, especially of broadcast crops such as maize, is mainly determined by the density and spatial arrangement of plants.
AB  - Odnosi (interakcije) između biljaka mogu biti pozitivni, negativni i neutralni. Kompeticija je najzastupljeniji oblik negativnih interakcija u agrofitocenozama. Jedna od opšte prihvaćenih definicija kompeticije je: 'Međusobno suprotstavljanje organizama (vrste, populacije) prilikom iskorišćavanja prirodnih resursa u uslovima njihovog deficita'. Kompeticija je dinamičan proces i pored interspecijske (usev-korov), uvek dolazi i do intraspecijske kompeticije (usev-usev ili korov-korov). Kompetitivna sposobnost biljaka se može ispoljiti na dva načina. Prvi način je sposobnost useva da kompeticijski deluje na korove, smanjujući njihovu biomasu i produkciju semena. Drugi način je sposobnost useva da toleriše kompeticijsko delovanje korova dajući istovremeno visoke prinose. Kompeticija kao najčešći oblik interakcija između useva i korova zavisi od mnogih faktora i može imati široku praktičnu primenu u sistemu mera za kontrolu zakorovljenosti. Mere kontrole korova su jedan od prirodnih ili alternativnih načina rešavanja problema zakorovljenosti jer je u poslednjih desetak godina poraslo interesovanje za mere suzbijanja korova koje se manje oslanjaju na primenu herbicida. Kao rezultat, primena mera gajenja kojima se deluje na interakcije usev-korov kao što su kompetitivniji genotipovi, gustina gajenja useva, prostorni raspored gajenih biljaka, količina i mesto primene mineralnih đubriva i dr., uticala je na stvaranje novog prostora za istraživanja u oblasti interakcija između useva i korova. Intenzitet kompeticijskog delovanja useva, posebno širokoredih kao što je kukuruz, je uglavnom određen gustinom i prostornim rasporedom biljaka.

Yields of ZP sweet maize hybrids in dependence on sowing densities

AB  - Sweet maize differs from maize of standard grain quality by many important traits that affect the ear appearance, and especially by traits controlling taste. The ear appearance trait encompasses the kernel row number, configuration, row pattern (direction and arrangement), seed set, kernel width and depth, ear shape and size. The quality of immature kernels is controlled by genes by which sweet maize differs from common maize. In order to obtain high-ranking and high-quality yields, it is necessary to provide the most suitable cropping practices for sweet maize hybrids developed at the Maize Research Institute, Zemun Polje. The adequate sowing density is one of more important elements of correct cropping practices. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of four sowing densities in four ZP sweet maize hybrids of different FAO maturity groups on ear qualitative traits and yields obtained on chernozem type of soil in Zemun Polje. The observed traits of sweet maize (ear length, kernel row number, number of kernels per row, yield and shelling percentage) significantly varied over years. The higher sowing density was the higher yield of sweet maize was, hence the highest ear yield of 9.67 t ha-1 , on the average for all four hybrids, was recorded at the highest sowing density of 70,000 plants ha-1. The highest yield was detected in the hybrid ZP 424su. The highest shelling percentage (67.81%) was found in the hybrid ZP 521su at the sowing density of 60,000 plants ha-1. Generally, it can be stated that sweet maize hybrids of a shorter growing season (FAO 400) could be cultivated up to 70,000 plants ha-1, while those of a longer growing season (FAO 500) could be grown up to 60,000 plants ha-1. In such a way, the most favorable parameters of yields and the highest yields can be obtained.
AB  - Kukuruz šećerac se razlikuje od kukuruza standardnog kvaliteta zrna po većem broju važnih osobina koje uslovljavaju izgled klipa, a posebno po osobinama koje uslovljavaju ukus. Osobina izgled klipa obuhvata broj redova zrna, konfiguraciju, raspored redova (pravac i uređenje), ozrnjenost, širinu i dubinu zrna, oblik i veličinu klipa. Kvalitet nezrelog zrna određuju geni po kojima se šećerac razlikuje od običnog kukuruza. Za hibride kukuruza šećerca selekcionisane u Institutu za kukuruz je potrebno odrediti najpogodniju tehnologiju gajenja, kako bi oni ostvarili visoke i kvalitetne prinose. Jedan od važnih elemenata pravilne tehnologije gajenja šećerca je adekvatna gustina setve. Cilj rada je bio da se utvrdi efekat četiri gustine setve kod četiri ZP hibrida kukuruza šećerca različitih FAO grupa zrenje na kvalitativne karakteristike klipa i visinu prinosa na černozemu u Zemun Polju. Ispitivane osobine dužina klipa, broj redova zrna, broj zrna u redu, prinos i randman kukuruza šećerca vrlo su značajno varirale po godinama. Prinos kukuruza šećerca se povećavao sa povećanjem gustine gajenja pa je najveći prinos klipa, prosečno za sva četiri hibrida, od 9.67 t ha-1 utvrđen u najvećoj gustini od 70000 bilj. ha-1. MeČu ispitivanim hibridima najveći prinos klipa je imao hibrid ZP 424su. Najbolji randman je imao hibrid ZP 521su u gustini od 60000 bilj/ha - 67.81%. Gledano u celini može se konstatovati da je hibride šećerce kraće vegetacije (FAO 400) moguće gajiti do 70000 bilj/ha a one duže vegetacije (FAO 500) do 60000 bilj/ha. Na taj način se dobijaju najpovoljniji parametri prinosa i najveći prinosi.
